Her testament of 21 jul 1736 was probated 01 aug 1736 (records of Jaques David Burnand, notary and curial at Moudon). It names her daughter Elizabeth, sister Estiennaz Dutoit wife of Antoine Dutoit, officier de Chavannes. The document also notes that her "cousin" is Mr. le justicier Dutoit, Châtelain de Vulliens. At this date, that would be Abraham Dutoit, apparently son of Isaac Dutoit the notary who held this position until his death in 1731.

Among the sponsors at his baptism was his uncle Gabriel Jérémie Dutoit. The identity of the "wards" (this is the word used in some American versions of their story) Charlotte and Marie who traveled with the family to America in 1817 have been a matter of speculation. Is it possible they were actually DeTrey relatives instead of Dutoit? No Dutoit relatives of the right age have turned up.
What conclusions can be made about these wards? The first point is that, from their ages, they are clearly not the children of Eugène Dutoit and Lydie de Trey, unless they were born well before their marriage. This couple is not supposed to have met until about 1815 (Lydie's story is told in some detail in Les de Trey, Philippe Mottu, Morges: Editions Cabédita, 1988) Further, it was usual for children to be "legitimized" by the subsequent marriage of their parents. Also, it does not seem likely that they were siblings of Eugène, since in that case their father Marc Philippe Dutoit and his wife Sabine Secrétan would have been perfectly capable of caring for them. There is a slim chance that they were illegitimate daughters of Eugène, but if that were true, it is hard to believe that this circumstance would not have been mentioned prominently among the objections of Lydie's father concerning the marriage.
The ages of these "wards" are somewhat in doubt. Charlotte's tombstone is now broken in such a way that the age at death is missing. However, earlier transcripts indicated she was age 66 when she died in 1875. Unfortunately, she died just at Christmas time, when the local newspaper took a week's vacation. No notice of her death appeared at that time. The 1860 and 1870 censuses agree in making her several years younger, implying a birth date in 1812 rather than 1809. In the 1850 census, she is in the household of Philip "Betten" (senior), where she is age 40, born in Switzerland (Jefferson Tp, fol. 422—the enumeration of this family is misleading; one of the members is Amelia Duplan, who is followed by a number of other members of the Bettens family, including Charlotte, without a notation that their surname is not also Duplan!). From the apparent ages of the "wards", and from the fact that Eugène had apparently become their guardian, we would have to conclude that they lost their parents no earlier than about 1814, in order for Eugène to be old enough to assume this responsibility. That he served in this capacity at all seems convincing evidence that he was a close relative of the children, who would almost certainly be therefore grandchildren of the minister Jean Philippe Dutoit-Aguet. (The minister died in 1790, so the children cannot be his.)
As far as we know, there were only two other sons of Dutoit-Aguet: Charles Victor, who was also a minister, and Gabriel Jéremie, of whom very little is known. Charles Victor was still alive as late as 1834; secondary sources place his death in 1838. Gabriel Jéremie is last known alive in 1793, when he was a sponsor at the baptism of Eugène Dutoit. For lack of a better candidate, the most likely father of the "wards" Charlotte and Marie Dutoit is therefore Gabriel Jéremie, or, perhaps, an unknown son of either Charles Victor or Gabriel Jérémie.
