[12563] The records about Edith and her brother, Edward, are confusing, to say the least. Each seems to offer a different date and place of birth....(Braintree, ENG; Black Notley, ENG; Woodham Parish, Essex, ENG). Possibly the children of William Stebbing.
The American Genealogist, Vol. 31, No. 4, Oct. 1955 has an article about a Stebbing Family of co. Essex, England. pp 193-200 by John Insley Coddington of Washington, D.C., which needs further study. Coddington suggests that Hale, House, and Related Families by Donald L. Jacobus, 1952, has fairly complete biography of Editha Stebbins and her husbands.
Mrs. Edatha Holyoke, wife of Elizur, died Oct. 24.....
Elizur Holyoke m. (2) in 1658 Editha (Stebbins) (Day) (Maynard)....(correction from pg 21 of the same volume where the date was given as 1685).
[15602] Elizur Holyoke married (1)at Springfield, MA, 20 Nov. 1640, Mary Pynchon, daughter of William and Anne (Andrew) Pynchon. Mary died in Springfield on 25 Oct. 1657.
[15383] Frances Tough was a widow when she married Edward Stebbins, circa 1628. Her first husband was Sampson Chester and her second husband was Thomas Smith. See TAG 30:193-204. Sampson Chester was the brother of John Chester, who married Dorothy Hooker, sister of Thomas Hooker. See TAG 30:193-96.
The name Edward Stebbins appears on the first list of inhabitants of Newtown (now Cambridge, MA), dated 29 Mar. 1632.
In 1636 he went to Connecticut and was one of the founders of Hartford, along with James Olmstead, Stephen Post and others. He was Constable of Hartford in 1638. He was a large land owner, a very worthy and respected man and a servant of the community. He was deputy to the General Court between 1639 and 1666.
Death: Between 8 October 1663 and 19 August 1668 (date of inventory) and probably closer to the latter date.
Frances was the daughter of Ralph Tough of Burrough-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire; widow of Sampson Chester and Thomas Smith (see TAG 30:193-204).
Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Cadwell, was alive at the time of her father's death in 1668.

Mary died at Hartford in 1657 at the time of the birth of her fifth child, Isaac.
After his wife died in 1657, he married Sarah Rockwell and had two more children.
