1840 census: Tioga Co., PA, Lawrence Tp., showing 3 sons and 3 daughters. Fitch quotes Nathaniel McDougall (1847) to the effect that Samuel was then living in Lawrenceville, Tioga Co., PA. Dates uncertain, 1850 possibly not consistent with earlier readings. Possibly Polly is second wife. Margaret McDougall age 11 with this couple in 1850 may not be daughter, could be niece or other relative, since there is not a corresponding infant in the 1840
census.
Will of Samuel's brother John McDougall contains a bequest to Samuel's wife Polly for the education of her children. Household in 1820 consists of Samuel (26-45), a son under 10, one female 10-15, and two females 16-25. One of the older females could be Polly, but the other two could not be Polly's daughters. Thus, it is possible Polly was his second wife.
Though there is no will or administration on file for Samuel, he is mentioned in Tioga Co. probate records as executor for his brother John, as administrator 17 jan 1822 for John Cline, and as witness 21 apr 1827 for the will of Eleazar Baldwin. Eleazar's son Buell, one of the county commissioners, was co-executor with Samuel in the estate of John McDougall.
Later another McDougall family settled in Tioga Co. Malcolm McDougall b. 1804 Scotland came with his sons William b. 1848 and Samuel b. 1847 in Scotland. By 1880, there seems to be no evidence of any remaining descendants of our Samuel left in Tioga Co., other than Maria who married James K. Stewart.
A census reading in Potter Co., 1850, Coudersport Borough, for W. W. McDougald age 30 surveyor could be a son of Samuel. A Catherine McDougald age 16 in the same household might be a sister of W. W., thus another possible child of Samuel. W. W. had wife Amanda age 24, son George age 4, and an additional Ellen Wetherbee age 20, perhaps a sister of Amanda. Potter Co. court records have not been checked, and there is no information about where this family lived in 1860. "Coudersport" appears to be the same place called "Caudersport" in the Fitch papers, where this person is said to be William, son of William McDougall Jr. and Eleanor Livingston. McDougall children baptised in 1826 and 1835 at the Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceville (extracted records in IGI) certainly appear to belong to Samuel, as there do not seem to be other possibilities. The three children baptised in 1826 are recorded without the names of the parents, and the three baptised in 1835 are listed as children of Samuel and Polly. These six children account for the family members listed in the 1840 census.
[7218] No will or administration is listed in Register's Index.

Family first appears in Frontier Co., NE school censuses in 1912, at which time they have children Martha age 4 years, and John 18 years. Possibly in the same household, because no children listed for them, are "Ireal McDougall" (Israel?) and his wife Fern. They were living in the town of Curtis. Clearly, "John" was not Samuel's child. His identity has not yet been worked out.
[7312] Living in Frontier Co., NE in 1920 census, with family and half-brothers Joseph B. and Isreal S. Joseph is also listed with Samuel's brother Wm. E. back in Phillips Co., KS that year! (Date from J.R. McDougall)

It appears Jennie Patten's records have confused sisters Sarah Ann and Jane A. Sarah Ann b. about 1830 appears as a widow with 2 children in the 1860 census, living with John S. McDougall, who should be her father. Moreover, that makes the Jane A. and Henrietta in the 1855 census the children of Sarah, not additional children of John S. 1850: Argyle p. 155. 1900 census shows her as servant for John A. Taylor b. 1846. She indicates 3 children, 2 living.

Her obituary was published in the Davenport Democrat and Leader (Davenport, Iowa), Monday, 02 apr 1928, but unfortunately it does not actually mention the date of her death, presumably about March 29-30 of that year: "MRS. HULLINGER OF DE WITT DIES. Resident 75 Years Passes Away; Native of New York; Burial Sunday. Special to the Democrat. DeWitt, Ia., April 2.—Funeral services for Miss Sarah Hullinger, one of DeWitt's oldest citizens and a resident here for 25 years was held from the home of her son, Dr. J. D. Hullinger, 722 Melrose court, Clinton, Sunday afternoon with burial in Rose Hill cemetery, Camanche. Rev. J. K. Hawkins of the First Methodist church officiated. Mrs. Hullinger was born in Essex, N. Y., Jan. 28, 1837. When nine year of age she came with her parents, over the St. Lawrence river and Great Lakes, landing at Fort Dearborn. In 1852 the family came to DeWitt and Sept. 23, 1852 she married William Hullinger. The family lived for many years on a farm near here and later made its home in this city until the death of Mr. Hullinger 11 years ago. Since that time Mrs. Hullinger has made her home with her children and was spending the winter with her daughter, Mrs. Millie Hullinger, in Clinton, where she died. She is survived by six children: W. E. Hullinger, Lyons; Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson, DeWitt; Mrs. Millie Hullinger, Dr. J. D. Hullinger and Mrs. Ida Samuels, Clinton and Mrs. Belle Meyers, DeWitt. There are also a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren."
Now, the Rose Hill Cemetery has been transcribed (on the web site of the US GenWeb project for Clinton Co., Iowa), and it shows a burial for "Mille A. Hullinger", with the death date 30 mar 1928. This must be a transcription error, it almost certainly is the burial of Sarah McDougall Hullinger, based on the above obituary.
[7335] Biographical Record of Clinton Co., Iowa (1901) p. 284 indicates she was born in Syracuse, NY. However, the same account has her father born in Aberdeen, Scotland and mother from Quebec, descendant of the royal family of France! Her obituary states that she was born in Essex, New York, a version that probably should be preferred, because it is more in line with the known migrations of the family, and because the rest of the information in the obituary appears to be mostly correct.

[14895] Clinton Co., IA marriage returns bk 1, p. 19, married by Aylett R. Cotton, County Judge. Also recorded in John R. McDougall family bible, which must have been used by his parents, as it notes "my daughter Sarah Elenor".
