Information from E. E. Sholly of South Bend, IN. Pension papers of his father and 1840 census, Richland Co., OH show that the son of Sgt. Alexander was John A. McDougall, and pension file includes correspondence from Jennie Patten, Mary MacMorris, and others. Family information from E. E. Sholly says John A. McDougall worked for the canal system, first in Toledo, OH, then Richland Co., then to Maples IN, where times were hard.
The farm there was sold for taxes, the first son died of an epidemic fever, etc. The family was active in the Methodist Church at New Haven, IN (Rachel buried there, IOOF cemetery), and the Taylor Chapel in St. Joseph Tp., Allen Co., IN.
[7102]
Obitary published 20 nov 1844, Ft. Wayne, IN, indicating "late of Licking Co., Ohio."

We think he is likely the John McDougall age 25 with wife Hulda and son Frank who appear in the 1870 census of Lewis, Essex Co., New York. However, this family group has not been located in any other census. The same (?) John McDougall (if he is the Civil War veteran) is thought to have married later to Mary Jane Wilkins. The 1865 census does not show that the John McDougall who was the son of Robert and Margaret was involved in the Civil War, but it may be that the enumerator simply failed to enter the required data in the separate section of the census schedule.
The John McDougall who was in the Civil War and who apparently belongs here had military service as follows: Mustered in 05 jun 1861 as Private, Co. K 38th NY Infantry, at East New York. Transferred to Co. F 21 dec 1862. Mustered out with company 22 jun 1863, at East New York. Enlisted as Private 08 dec 1863 at Plattsburgh, Co. E 2nd NY Veteran Cavalry, discharged 23 mar 1865, New Orleans. Pension (application?) dated 14 aug 1869, application 146896, certificate 116129. His obituary on Find-a-Grave and that of his wife (however, no sources cited, so authenticity of these obituaries has not been confirmed) mention his service. In fact, the account of John McDougall could equally well come from a county history, as it does not actually mention his death: "John McDougal was the son of Robert and Margaret (Kilmer) McDougall, both natives of Argyle, Washington County, New York. John's father was of Scot descent; his mother's family was German. The McDougall and Kilmer families came to Essex County via the town of Essex before 1830, residing in the Whallon's Bay section. John McDougal enlisted in the Civil War, serving in Company K of the 38th New York Volunteer Infantry, and later in Company E of the 2nd New York Veteran's Cavalry. His first enlistment was with the 38th, having joined in 1861. His regiment saw action in the Virginia campaign. He suffered from disease and sickness during this time, sometimes being treated at the military hospital. He re-enlisted with the 2nd New York Veteran's cavalry in December 1863, and was dispatched to the Red River campaign in Louisiana and Missisippi. He was discharged from service in the Union army due to disability from dysentery and a gunshot wound to the right foot received in May 1864 at Morganza Bend, Louisiana. This wound occurred when his carbine accidentally discharged while his horse was jumping a ditch. Later in life, after the war, John walked with a shambling gate, walking on the inner border of his right foot - this caused by the gunshot wound which fractured the second and third metatarsal bones. After the war, John made his living farming in Lewis, New York."
However, we found a short death notice in the Elizabethtown Post, April 2, 1914: "John McDougal died at his home in the town of Lewis several days ago. In his strong young manhood the deceased enlisted in Company K of the 38th N. Y. Vols., (2d Scott Life Guards) and went to the front to fight for his country, leaving Elizabethtown for the battle line May 28, 1861."
His children by both known wives, and from any possible additional marriages, need to be documented. One apparent child is a Mary McDougall 1889-1970 who married William Pulsifer, great-grandparents of Angela Rancour, a strong DNA match with our McCoy family and most likely Dad's fourth cousin once removed. Documentation would be improved if the Civil War pension file for John C. McDougall could be obtained. Because he died after 1930, it appears the file is still in the custody of the Department of Veterans Affairs rather than the National Archives.

The census entry for 1820 appears twice on the same page with identical data. It is not known if there were two families, or a duplication. Middle intial on 1835 census only. If the John McDougall in the 1810 census of Argyle (p. 458) living near Daniel Sr. is this one, then Daniel must have had an additional son who has not been identified.

This may be the John J. McDougall and wife Martha (d. 01 dec 1859) in the membership of the Argyle United Presbyterian Church. Martha was age 33 at thie time of her death. This couple had children baptised there. Census readings of 1855 and 1860 can be identified with these. The John I. McDougall listed in published cemetery records is identified with this couple, as daughter Emma is with another family in the next census.

This family is listed as #55 in the family list of the South Argyle Presbyterian Church, circa 1830. The daughter Nancy is believed to be the same Nancy (Agnes) McDougall from that congregation who married David Reid in 1832. It is possible that there were 2 more daughters, as sisters Mary Ann b. about 1834 and Catherine b. about 1837 are found in the 1855 census in the same neighborhood, 18 years residence in NY state (same as for other members of this family, something which still has to be explained).

Assignment of parentage is based only on remarks of Jennie Patten that a daughter of John R.'s son John D. claimed her father was a cousin of Levi McDougall. If actually true, then John D. would have been the brother of James and therefore son of John R. However, if the relationship was not actually first cousin, but something more remote, it might be that John R. belongs somewhere else, and a different John actually belongs in the family of Duncan and Phebe.

Also 6 children by his second wife, oldest about 15, youngest about 2. Burial place listed as Pleasant Hill. In counting his wives, it is evident that the first, Lucinda, was never mentioned again! Indian Wars Pension Index should be checked to see if the son who was a soldier can be located.
