While it is certain that a Jane McDougall married Peter Dings, and that there was a Jane McDougall, daughter of Dougall McDougall and Mary Shaw, baptised in the Dutch Reformed Church of Mount Ross in 1777, we found no proof that it was the Jane baptised at the Dutch Reformed Church of Mount Ross was the same Jane who married Peter Dings. In fact, the deed records of Washington Co., New York point to a different solution. The marriage record, which conceivably could have indicated parentage, has not been found. The Jane who married Peter Dings died in St. Lawrence Co., New York in 1869 , but the family information seems to place her date of birth in 1784 (stone in Flackville Cemetery, Lisbon, NY, is badly weathered, but apparentl gives her age at death as 85 years, consistent with census information). The only evidence we found, in the form of quit claim deeds relating to her interest in residual property from the estate of Ronald and Effy McDougall in the middle third of farm lot 75 in the Argyle Patent, strongly suggests she was one of the children of Ronald and Effy, possibly the one Jennie Patten called Jean, about whom nothing is known.
Another Dings figures in the history of lot 75, John J. Dings. Jennie believed he was married to Mary McDougall, daughter of Ronald and Effy, and we have not been able to rule out that possibility. John J. purchased part of Ronald's property in lot 75, but so far, there is no evidence that he held any interest in the residual property that was left to their heirs-at-law. So far, there seems to be no evidence apart from proximity that Mary McDougall, believed to have been the wife of John J. Dings, was actually a daughter of Ronald and Effy.
We think Jennie Patten probably deferred to the account of Myron Dings in The Dings Family in America (Chicago, 1927, privately published), which, interestingly, seems not to have any information about John J. Dings (we think he is the second son John in the family of Jacob Dings and Elizabeth Knickerbocker, of whom the Dings genealogy reports "nfr" — no further record). As for the family of Peter Dings, we note that the last of the children of Peter and Jane, William Dings, was born in 1832, and if Jane were the same person baptised in 1777, her age at the time of William's birth would have been 55, a most unlikely occurrence. If she were born in 1784, she would have been 48 at the time, still quite unlikely but at least possible. Also, the first child of Peter and Jane was named Euphemia, a clear reference to the wife of Ronald McDougall, and, if we understand the fragments of evidence that are now available, Jane's mother. The account in the Dings genealogy (p. 115) reports that Peter's wife was baptised at Mount Ross, but omits the date of baptism, and gives no source for the reported birth date of 1784. We found no further information in later genealogies.
For these reasons, we show the present Jane McDougall, daughter of Dougall and Mary, as a different person from the wife of Peter Dings.
How did the Jane McDougall baptised in 1777 come to be associated with Peter Dings? We think it was simply a result of Myron Dings' research, in which he found baptisms of the Dings family at Mount Ross, and, coincidentally, some McDougall baptisms in the same set of church records. He certainly did not undertake a thorough study of the many confusing McDougall families of the Argyle Patent, so he would not have been aware of the other possibilities.

While the Jane McDougall baptised in 1777 as the daughter of Dougall McDougall and Mary Shaw has long been listed as the wife of Peter Dings, the available evidence does not seem to support that conclusion. Instead, the Jane McDougall who married Peter Dings, born about 1784, was apparently the daughter of Ronald and Effy McDougall, and after their death, was one of the parties who held an interest in the residual property of Ronald and Effie in the middle third of farm lot 75 in the Argyle Patent.
