Jennie Patten believed this Alexander died before 1800, explaining the Ann McDougall widow on the 1800 census. However, Alexander and Ann, with all of his siblings and their spouses, appear in a family partition deed dated 02 feb 1807 (vol. H, pp. 395-396). Moreover, this may be the best candidate for the Alexander appearing in 1820 Argyle p. 155 with 3 sons, 5 daughters, and apparently no wife. The name of the wife appears sometimes as Amy, Aney, or Anny. Where was he in other years?

1855 census (Lewis, Essex Co., NY, #259) shows Alexander born in Washington Co., age 38, resided in Lewis for the past 14 years (thus since about 1841). By 1860, his son Henry is living with Adam, son of Robert McDougall, so it appears that Alexander had either died or that he had left the area. Ages in 1850 are not consistent, making Alexander b. about 1808 and son Henry b. about 1849.

Not named in the family partition deed of 1853, so probably dead by that time without issue. Jennie Patten seems to indicate he died in PA, but we wonder if she confused him with another Alexander.

The lists of Argyle settlers show Allan arrived in 1738 with wife Elizabeth Graham and daughters Margaret, Anna, and Hannah. The petition of 17 oct 1738 credits him with 5 children (but entries in this column may actually be total persons, not children). By 1763, he had died leaving a widow, 4 daughters, and one son still living. He died before the patent was granted, and his son ended up with Lot 95.
