As reported by Mrs. John P. Baird to Fermine Baird Catchings circa 1920, Avis was named "by her grandfather for his great-grandmother, Avis". However, as the grandfather in question, Peter Baird Sr., died a quarter century before Avis was born, this story cannot be literally true. It is true, however, that Avis is a very uncommon name, and, like Rhoda, it may have been carried in the family's memory.

Littell's Passaic Valley Settlers says he married Sarah, daughter of Jacob Carle, and lived somewhere in the vicinity of Long Hill, which is on the line between Somerset and Morris Counties in the vicinity of Basking Ridge. This identification seems confirmed by the stone at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church cemetery, for Sarah Carle, wife of Bedent Baird. Accounts of the family say he was a member of the Jersey Blues militia, and later removed to "German Flats, Canada", in spite of the fact that German Flats is in New York.
Exactly what became of Bedent is not entirely clear. Part of the confusion is that, in all probability, another Bedent Baird, son of William Baird and Margaret O'Riley, lived in the same area until this family removed (severally) to Burke Co., NC. However, it seems very probable that the elder Bedent Baird did not leave the area of Basking Ridge and had died by 1800, because of the following marriage, recorded by Rev. Robert Finley at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church:
07 mar 1800: Fortune, "black-man belonged to B. Baird", married Phyllis, colored, "belonging to Ruth Lefferty".
If this means what it says, Fortune had formerly belonged to Bedent Baird, while Phyllis still belonged to Ruth Lefferty. The most likely reason that Fortune no longer belonged to Bedent was that Bedent had died, and Fortune had become a free man. Or, perhaps Fortune was freed when Bedent left for "German Flats", if that is indeed where he went. There does not seem to be a will for Bedent, but there might be a manumission, deed, or similar document on record. Indeed, there are several reports on the internet of the Bedent who married Sarah Carle dying in 1792, but this has not been established.
Arguing against this interpretation, however, is a provision of the will of James Anderson, husband then of Phebe Bockoven, 25 dec 1811. He grants to his wife Phebe the use of the negro man, Fortune, suggesting that Fortune had been sold out of the estate of Bedent Baird. The will also notes that James Anderson had purchased land from the Gavin McCoy estate — Gavin had been an officer in the local militia during the Revolution.

In 1885 census, located in Des Moines Tp., T28 R68 sec10, NW1/4 of SE1/4. Unsourced profile on Ancestry.com says he was born in Sullivan Co., IN 12 jan 1840 and died in Missouri 10 jan 1916. The death certificate in Folker Township, Clark Co., Missouri shows Byron P. Baird, widowed, farmer, son of John Baird and Eliza Bryant, born 19 jan 1840 (however, this date was written over something else), died 10 jan 1916 of "La Grippe", burial at Black Oak Cemetery, Granger, Missouri, informant Mrs. T. J. ? Baird of Cantril, Iowa. Age at death 77 years, 11 months, 22 days, which corresponds with the birth date listed on the certificate. However, the gravestone and the profile posted on findagrave.com give 12 jan 1840 as the birth date. The accompanying text on findagrave.com is not a contemporary obituary, but is instead based on genealogical research by one of the contributors. It includes the following detail, which is clearly not supported by the death certificate: "Though Byron's death certificate does not indicate it, family members reported at the time that in January, 1916 he was tied to a chair in his kitchen during a home robbery and froze to death before being discoverred." It is not plausible that such a dramatic event would not have been reported in the local press, followed by a coroner's inquest, or that it would not have been reported on the death certificate as the cause of death. However, a published obituary has not yet been located.

When did he move his family to Colorado? Could Joseph Barnett have gone with them? Might this explain why Joseph does not appear to be buried with his wife in Van Buren Co., Iowa?
A newpaper item in the Denver Rocky Mountain News, 02 aug 1893 says: "Constesting a Homestead. Christopher M. Baird yesterday filed with the register of the United States land office a notice of contest of T. V. Loveland's homestead entry No. 5959 dated November 29, 1884, for the northeast corner of section 10, township 4 north, range 69 west, being 160 acres in Larimer County. The complainant claims that Loveland has wholly abandoned the tract and is not fulfulling the residence or cultivation requirements of the law. Captain McBeth issued an order for the taking of testimony on September 9 before Notary J. H. Newell of Berthoud."
His obituary suggests some answers: Greeley Daily Tribune (Greeley, Colorado), 31 mar 1930: "C. M. Baird, 40 Years on Farms Near Here, Dies. Christopher M. Baird, for 40 years a farmer in and near Greeley, died Monday morning at 614 Thirteenth avenue, at the age of 77. Mr. Baird is survived by his wife and five children, Leroy and J. W. Baird of Greeley, Mrs. Luxton of Anaconda, Mont., Mrs. Fred McCoy and Mrs. Eva Fitzpatrick of Seattle, Wash. He is survived also by twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are in charge of Sattley's Funeral Home." In the same newspaper on the next day: "Baird Funeral Wednesday Morning. Funeral services for Christopher M. Baird will be held from the Sattley Funeral Home at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning with Rev. C. O. Thibodeau of the Methodist Church in charge. Burial will be at Linn Grove." On April 4, we read: "Mrs. Thomas V. Luxton of Anaconda, Mont., was called to Greeley by the illness and death of her father, C. M. Baird of 614 Thirteenth avenue. She is here with other members of the family." — and this establishes the name of the second husband of Mary Alma ("Birdie") Baird.
