The baptismal record of her son Mathieu (1716) indicates the name Cros, but later records say Riou. While the name Cros could be a scribal error, from confusion with the name of one of the witnesses, Magdelaine Cros, the marriage record in Geneva is clear, giving the names of both parents. Source of the death date given by Le Moine is not indicated. Le Moine also quotes marriage contract (Louis Pasteur II, vol. 24, p. 427) at Geneva as containing an endowment from Mathieu Riou, uncle of Elizabeth Riou. There may be more to this, since we have established that Mathieu Riou was in fact the father of Elizabeth, relationships confirmed by several different documents. The uncle might have been Mathieu Reboul, brother of Magdelaine Reboul, the mother of Elizabeth.

The same day, Pierre Riou, uncle of Etienne and brother-in-law of Jean Reboul, was buried at Vernoux.

By 05 jan 1645 (Antoine Piccard, notary), he was already dead, and his wife was acting as mère tutrice of his children. By the 1650's the children must have reached the age of majority, and there are several settlements among them at that time. Notary Jean Daccord (active 1605-1624) preserved a document dated 28 feb 1620 in which André Croserens sells property for himself and his unnamed brothers from the estate of his parents "honnorable et provide" François Croserens and his widow Louise Barbier.

His registers from 1604 through 1619 have survived. A document of Jean Daccord, notary at Lutry, identifies Gabriel as the brother of François Croserens. Gabriel is probably a descendant of the Jean Croserens who was a notary at Lutry 1516-1532. The archives of Lutry has a copy of his testament dated 28 dec 1615 (Noir C 197, not examined).

Apparently he had a daughter Isbrande by an unknown wife before his marriage to Esther Dutoict. The records located so far do not explain the situation. The daugher Isbrande had her own guardian and there is no mention in any document that mentions her, of her presumed half-brother, Jean Pierre Croserens.
Jules must have still been a minor in 1647 when he went to live with a relative of his mother in Bern:

Presents le sieur Henry Cassaz et honnorable Pierre Delliens [i.e., Deillens] dudit Lustry tesmoings a ce requis.
Jean Philippe Grobety, known in Bern as Hans Philipp Grobeti, silversmith, had married Anna Landow and had already baptised at least 6 children at the Cathedral of Bern.
By 12 jun 1662, Jules Croserens had left the country and abandoned his wife, leaving her impoverished. About the same time, his mother had died, and his son Jean Pierre was born. It is likely that more of his story can be found, for his widow appealed to the Baillif of Lausanne and to the authorities in Bern for relief of her situation. It is likely that she was unable to touch any of her husband's property, because he was not dead, and she had little or no property of her own. The edicts of Their Excellencies of Bern that were then in effect would have required her to wait at least a year before proceding with a cause for divorce (cf. Regula Matzinger-Pfister, Les sources du droit du Canton de Vaud. C. Epoque bernoise. I. Les mandats généraux bernois pour le Pays de Vaud, 1536-1798, Basel: Schwabe & Co., 2003, pp. 34-45, "Introduction du droit matrimonial réformé, 1537"), which would have required at least an additional 6 weeks, and probably much longer. We are indebted to Therese Metzger for locating the actual divorce decree, which implies that Jules was accused of some criminal act.
A hint of what might be involved is found in a transaction recorded by Claude Longuedey, notary at Lausanne and Curial de Vufflens-la-Ville (ACV DG 153/1), dated 15 dec 1660. Jules Croserens of Lutry owes Pierre Blanchet, bourgeois and justicier de Lutry, 1000 florins, as a loan, to be paid back over 10 years, the first payment due on St. Martin's day, 1661. Such a large sum of money was likely going to be a problem, especially upon the death of Jules' father, and we can only imagine that Blanchet was not paid back.

Birthplaces of the children show the family moved to Indiana for a few years, perhaps in connection with the paper-making trade. They appear in the 1840 census of Switzerland Co., IN in Vevay, with a son and daughter both under the age of 5. In 1850, they are in Springfield, Hamilton Co., Ohio, with children Theodore, Martha D., John J., and Mary J.
The 1860 census caused some confusion: We found Charles B. Cross, age 49, occupation apparently listed as Tar '' (the ditto marks from Merchant, above in the same column) (but could also be interpreted as Farmer), born in Ohio, with wife Mary, age 41, born in Scotland. The children in this household are John J., age 16, born in Indiana (this information is consistent with the 1850 census), Josephine, age 11, born in Ohio (she could be the Mary J. from the 1850 census, except that there is a burial for Mary J. in 1850 — perhaps Mary and Josephine were twins, but only one was listed on the 1850 census?), William, age 7, born in Ohio, and Mary, age 2, born in Illinois.
In 1870, Charles Cross age 55 is again in Jefferson Co., Indiana, with wife Mary, age 47, born in Scotland, children John, age 26, farm worker, William, age 16, Mollie, age 12, and Cora, age 9.
In 1880, Charles T. Cross, with second wife Mary, born in Scotland, and 2 daughters, is in Madison, IN, listed as worker in paper mill. There are two children listed, Mary L. age 21, born in Illinois, her mother born in Scotland, and Anna C., age 18, born in Indiana, mother born in Scotland. From this census record, it is clear that the Charles B. Cross family found in 1860 is indeed the same one. There is a death record for Mary L., identified as Mary Louise Cross, born 07 may 1858 in Madison, Indiana, died 02 jul 1946 in Decatur, Illinois, daughter of Charles Cross (birth place "unknown, Pennsylvania") and Mary Gibson ("unknown, Scotland").
C. T. Cross is listed in poll tax roll of 1837, Milton Tp., Jefferson Co., IN.
From the records discovered so far, it is clear that the mother of the children born after 1857 is Mary Gibson. Mollie and Mary Louise are presumed to be the same person. That leaves William as the main uncertainty, either the last of Louisa's children or the first of Mary's.
