Appears in 1860 census next door to his father, Joel Smith, Oliver Tp. p. 141. Marriage record appears in 2 forms: (1) marriage permission from B. F. Doggett, and (2) marriage return dated 15 mar 1849, by J. H. Evans, noting date of marriage as 28 dec 1849. This should certainly be 1848! Family notes of Ruth Hoggatt give the date as 11 feb 1848. The family moved to Greene Tp., Grant Co., IN about 1865, according to Grant Co. history of 1901. Possibly another dau., Rhody Ellen, d. 20 jan 1857 in Oliver Tp., age 6 weeks.
[5396] 1860 census seems to indicate "ditto" from preceding entry, Joel and his wife b. PA. This is not very clear. Death notice shows 11 nov 1825, Adams Co., OH.
[5397] Death notice extracted by DAR, unfortunately omits death date, but appears between 2 notices for Oct-Nov 1913 in Swazee Press. Actual date from cemetery record, age at death consistent with birthdate from other sources.
[14792] Adams Co., OH: "Dec the 24 1848 Attn Randolph Cockeril. Sir this is to certify that I am willing that Joseph Smith and my Daughter Martha Ann That you shood issue lison to git marred. - B. F. Doggett" (see also p.259)

Listed as Louie M. Prouty and living with her parents in 1900 census. Pension application of 17 may 1907 puts family's move to Smith Co., KS about 1875, so Louie may have been born in KS instead of IA.
[6078] m. O. D. Prouty, lived in Bellingham, WA, then later to Sedro Woolley (1933). Birthdate from Reuben P. Smith pension application, 22 mar 1915.
