Exactly what a "substitué" was at that time and place is not clear; in French-speaking Switzerland it might mean a civil or military appointment of a temporary nature, and we take it to be a statement of his occupation unrelated to the question of his origins. Pfaltzbourg-Lixheim was indeed a principality at that time. (Modern spelling is Phalsbourg.)
