1850 census, Jefferson Co., IN, p. 39A, with wife and sons John C. and Daniel D. It appears that the Cross families of Jefferson Co., IN are his decendants, or else related, but proof has not been found. Moreover, his daughter Sarah is buried in the old Hopewell Presbyterian cemetery at Montgomery, OH.
Listed as private in 8th Indiana Cavalry (39th) Regiment, Co. H, enrolled from Jefferson Co., IN. There seems to have been an earlier John B. ? Cross b. about 1819 who married Dorinda Deacon and died in 1852 (Dorinda d. 09 aug 1875 age 96).
There is an entry for the John J. Cross, Private in the 8th Indiana Cavalry, Co. H, with date 31 aug 1883 and file number 535355. It remains to be determined if this is our John J. Cross, or one of his cousins or other relatives. In the Congressional Record, 14 jun 1902, we found a bill to increase the pension of this John J. Cross to $30, without any further information about him apart from his service in that unit. The bill appears to have passed in the Senate 12 jan 1903. There had, in fact, been an earlier attempt to increase his pension (House of Representatives, 54th Congress, Report No.2120), dated 01 jun 1896, recounting that John J. Cross had enlisted 28 aug 1861 in Company H, 39th Indiana Volunteers, which regiment reenlisted and became the 8th Indiana Cavalry. He was honorably dischared 30 jun 1865. He had been captured at the battle of Bentonville and was confined in Libby Prison until 02 apr 1865, after which he contracted chronic diarrhea. He was pensioned at $4 on 31 aug 1883, increased to $6 26 mar 1890, then $8 on 09 sep 1891. Since 1880 he has suffered from epilepsy and is not totally incapacitated. 249 citizens petitioned on this occassion for the increase in his pension to $30. He is now "helpless", the increase is recommended.
The Indiana State Archives has abstracted their Civil War muster and service records. The entry for John J. Cross says he enrolled at Indianapolis on 28 aug 1861, age 18, in Co., H, 39th Regiment, discharged 30 jun 1865. "Veteran volunteer, Feb. 28, 1864. Promoted to Sergeant on Feb. 28, 1864. Promoted to Commissary Sergeant on July 11, 1865. Mustered out at Camp Chase, Ohio. Cavalry/Battery Unit, 6th Cavalry". Accession number 1938001.
This record, however, certainly appears to be defective, first, in assigning him to the 6th Cavalry instead of the 8th Cavalry, and second, in promoting him after his discharge. The promotion should presumably have occurred in 1864. It may be possible to confirm some of this in a regimental history.
We finally found him in the general index to pension records as well as the Veterans' Administration indexes. The notation was puzzling at first, he was located in "Equality MO or Ill." This turns out to be Equality village, in Equality Township, now Gallatin Co., Illinois, but the reference to MO, presumed to mean Missouri, is still a problem, as Gallatin Co. is on the wrong side of Illinois ever to have been considered part of Missouri. The pension file (not yet examined) should provide the answer.
This information in turn led to the 1880 and 1900 census listings in Equality, Gallatin Co., Illinois, and for Phebe, his widow, in 1910, 1920, and 1930.
His tombstone in Equality Village Cemetery is badly worn, but shows traces of his Civil War unit. There do not appear to be any dates. His wife and daughter Mary Lizzie are buried in the same cemetery. The reading on Find-a-Grave is Sgt. J. J. Cross.

She is present on the 1860 census, apparently a daughter of Charles T. Cross. She might be a twin of the Mary J. Cross, born in 1849, and died in 1850, attested by her tombstone. She has not been located in 1870, and would likely have been married by then, if she survived. Or, perhaps the tombstone was transcribed incorrectly, and Mary J., known as Josephine, actually died in 1860 after the census enumeration? This possibility too seems incorrect. We found the marriage record for Cyrus Ryker and Josephine Cross, licence dated 08 nov 1869 and marriage celebrated 09 nov 1869, in Jefferson Co., Indiana.

Her death record in Illinois says she was born in Madison, Indiana, but the census records say she was born in Illinois, which seems more likely to be correct.

1859-60 directory of Madison, IN lists him as clerk in the business of John B. Cross (stoves and tin ware). However, I have not yet managed to locate him in the 1860 census. He is on the Civil War draft registration list for Madison, Jefferson Co., Indiana, dated June, 1863, age 22, occupation tinner, married.

He is found in the Charles T. Cross family in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, but it is not known whether his mother was Louisa or Mary, as Louisa's date of death is not known. If he can be found in the 1880 census or in later vital records, his parentage might be established.

Hammatt Papers indicates Anna Goss married Thomas Hodgkins 1749, but Ipswich Vital Records shows intention for Thomas Hodgkins and Anna Cross ?? aug 1747. The original record has not been examined, if indeed it still exists.

The notary Daniel Jaccaud (ACV DP 51/1) recorded a transaction 18 jul 1685 in which Samuel Rouge, conseiller and Lieutenant Abbatial de Payerne acknowledged a debt of 24 écus to his "beaupère" (step-father) Abraham Crostel bourgeois de Payerne and minister at Lutry.
His undated, nuncupative testament is in a register of David Tavel, notary at Payerne (ACV DP 101/1), evidently from the mid 1680's. It names his niece Magdelaine, daughter of the late Noble Isaac Crostel, nephew David son of the late Noble David Crostel, a niece and nephew who are children of Jean Poterat, two additional nieces who are daughters of David Crostel, daughter Marie Magdelaine Crostel who is the widow of Jean Rodolphe Mestral who was coseigneur of Combremont-le-Grand, and his wife Judith Desibord. From this, we suppose that Judith must have been his second wife.

A document recorded 14 feb 1509 by Pierre Gachet, notary of Payerne (ACV DP 43, fol. 94), establishes that Clara had married Discret Claude Crostel of Payerne, and that she was the sister of Jean and Pierre Faulcon: "Discretus vir Cl Claudius Crostel, burgensis Paterniaci" confitetur recepisse "a nobili Clara eius uxore ex manus nobilium virorum Johannis et Petri Faulcon suorum fratreum" 400 ff. pp. pro dote eius ac parte, partagio et porcione sibi dicte Clare competere debentibus. Quosquidem Claudius assignat super totas vineas apus Espeses in Valle, partientes cum Petro Crostel eius cognato.
By 01 apr 1513, when he made his testament (Pierre Ruerat, notary, ACV DP 92, fols. 87 and 99), he had two daughters: "Glaudius Crostel, burgensis Paterniaci" teste en instituant héritier universel "Guilliermum Crostel eius filium". ordonne que ses filles Jaqua et Catharina, comme sa femme Clara, perçoivent la moitié de ses biens pour leur entretien, jusqu'au mariage de ses filles, qui seront alors dotées chacune de 1'000 florins. Son héritier ne pourra aliéner sans le consentement de son tuteur durant 10 ans. Il substitue ses deux filles à son fils, et réciproquement. A ses enfants, il substitue pour les biens paternels (Crostel) deux lignes Mareschet. Pour les autres, les enfants de "Petri Crostel, fratris sui", qui figure parmi les tuteurs.
