Most information from pension application W17823 and bounty land warrant BLW #27682-160-55. Application also states he lived near Shawangunk, Ulster Co., during the Revolutionary period. Church records for Sawangunk and New Hurley Dutch Reformed churches have been published. The pension application notes that some of the areas referred to as being in Ulster Co. became parts of Orange Co. about 1809. Gen. Hist. of Central NY, 1912, pp. 1293-1295 notes land transactions and tradition of descent from Welsh immigrant to VA. However, there is no information about how old that tradition may be.

It is generally believed that he was living in or near the town of Walkill at the time he enlisted for military service. Walkill was formed out of Montgomery, and so it is plausible that he lived with his family on his ancestral farm until after the Revolution, when he finally bought property of his own. The earliest transaction found so far dates from 1788, when he purchses 230 acres in Deer Park from David Johnston of Dutchess Co. He had to make three yearly payments on the land, and for that purpose three separate bonds were executed, identifying him as a farmer of Walkill.

David Johnston was a well-known merchant in New York City who married a daughter of Jacob Walton and Mary Beekman (she the daughter of Gerard Beekman). During the Revolution, David relocated his family from New York City to Annandale, Dutchess County, in the same area where the Beekman family had extensive real estate holdings. How David happened to own land in Deer Park has not yet been discovered, but it is clear that his relationship to Isaac Slaughter must be only that of a wealthy land owner selling some of his land.

Other, similar transactions involve John McKinstry, and it appears that McKinstry later headed west "for his health", but died nevertheless at Montgomery, Hamilton Co., OH, where some of Isaac's descendants and neighbors had settled. It is also possible that Isaac himself may have made the journey, for we also have a record that says he held a tract of land purchased at the Federal Land Office in Jeffersonville, IN, for his son Jeremiah. (Hopewell Cemetery, Montgomery, OH: John McKinstry, Esq. "late merchant of Boston, Mass., who died on his Journey westward in pursuit of health", died 29 oct 1825, age 56 years.)

Not completely clear that this is another son of Isaac and Martha, but listed this way on FamilySearch.org. He is apparently the James H. Slawter who is the son of Isaac and Martha.

1850 census, as James H. Slauter with his parents Isaac and Martha, Liberty Township, Warren Co., Indiana. 1860 census, same place, as James B. Slauter, youngest child of Isaac and Martha, and with 3 younger Smalley children who had been born in Illinois and Texas. Next door, son William S. Slauter age 30 with wife Elixzabeth 24 and daugther Martha R. age 5. Not yet found in 1870 census, but in 1880, he is living next door to his father-in-law W. B. Haxton (the relationship is noted in the census, even though enumerated as separate dwellings and households), but indexed as Slonter, a misreading of Slauter. However, exactly the same family is also enumerated in 1880 in Springdale, Washinton Co., Arkansas, again indexed as Slonter.

Marriage record of 1868 is indexed as James B. Slanter (misreading of Slauter) to Elixabeth Haxton.

For lack of better alternatives, and because of the good match with dates and given names, John is believed to be not only the father of Dennis, for which documentation exists, but also of Isaac. Much more documentation is needed. The Dutch Reformed congregation at New Hurley was formed in 1770 from a portion of the Shawwangunk congregation, and one of the signers of the petition of 05 apr 1768 to form the new parish was Jan Slaugter.
