Death date between 1 Aug. 1681 (date of will) and 24 Oct. 1682 (probate of will).
[15343] Henry Smith was her step-brother, son of Mrs. Sanford by a former husband.
Henry, the third son, appears to have remained on the frontier.

1850: Union Tp., Davis Co., IA, p. 244; 1860: Prairie Tp., household I. Jolly. Deeds and probate records need to be studied to determine his death date and the names of his heirs. He made several purchases relating to the estate of William Walker in the 1850's, but it is not clear that he had any direct interest in that estate. He was probably just buying land adjoining his farm.
[5315] Based on assumption that years in the age at death were misread.
[5316] Age at death transcribed as 53 years, 2 months, 2 days. The years are clearly wrong, based on censuses and records for the rest of the family. The correct years should be 59 or possible 58.

Birthdate from the bounty land warrant application file of the estate of John B. Smith, which includes copy of information from the "family record" of John B. Smith.
Signing his full name on the inscription, he presented a copy of the book "Fifteen Years among the Mormons" to the John Wingate McCoy family. His birthplace is given in the 1850 and 1860 censuses as Indiana. So far, not conclusively identified on any census after 1860. (1860, Prairie Tp., Davis Co., IA, with George W. Snodgrass, physician, and family.)
However, there are several records that seem to relate to him. Another, unrelated Hugh Smith from Kentucky lived in Van Buren Co., IA, but so far, no record of his middle intial has been found. His wife was Martha Redman (09 oct 1827 - 01 oct 1903, buried in Smith Cemetery, Union Tp.), and he lived in Van Buren Co. until his death in 1907 (also in Smith Cemetery, Union Tp., Van Buren Co., IA, 20 dec 1820 - 30 sep 1907). A marriage record in Van Buren Co. has Hugh D. Smith marrying Armilda Hale 01 mar 1864. In 1870, Armilda and her daughter Fanny Smith are living with a different family (Armilda is working as a servant), and Hugh is not in the county. By 1880, she was married to Ira W. Abernathy, according to records of the Hale family, and the 1880 census shows her with her daughter Fanny (now listed as Abernathy) and two more children by her second husband.. There is a cemetery record in Cantril for Nancy Ellen, wife of Hugh D. Smith, died 07 may 1880, age 39 (she should be listed on the 1880 US Census mortality schedules). She would have to be a second wife, and since the first wife was still alive and had remarried, Armilda and Hugh must have been divorced, or else there were two Hugh D. Smith's, not likely even in the Smith family! Finally, the 1880 census shows H. D. Smith, single, age 42, born in Ohio and parents born in Ohio, living with the R. D. Smith family and various other boarders in Jackson Tp., Van Buren Co., IA. He appears to be unrelated to the head of the household, and thus could actually be our Hugh D. Smith. It may be possible to fill in some of the blanks here by studying court records, state censuses, etc.
Records of the Van Buren Co. "Old Settlers' Association", from lists of participants in reunions in 1871, indicate that H. D. Smith of Jackson Tp. arrived in the county in October, 1839. Since he was only an infant then, we can place the migration of the John B. Smith family in the same year.
Since the second Hugh Smith, the one who married Martha Redman, died in 1907, it is virtually certain that our Hugh D. Smith is the one who killed himself in 1890: The Independent (Hawarden, Iowa), 02 oct 1890, "TIRED OF LIFE. Hugh D. Smith, of Cantrill, Commits Suicide. Keokuk, Ia., Sept. 29.—The town of Cantrill, Ia., was thrown into an intense state of excitement yesterday over the suicide of Mr. Hugh D. Smith, an old resident of that place. He shot himself with an old army pistol, and he dies almost instantly. Family trouble was the cause. He was respected by the entire community, and had the sympathy of everybody in the family disturbances." A story appeared 28 sep 1890 in the Omaha Daily Bee (Omaha, Nebraska), indicating the death occurred on the morning of September 27.

Apparently not the Huldah A. Smith who married Job S. Edgington, son Joseph born 25 sep 1856, Meigs Tp. 1860 census showed that Huldah b. 1816. There is a possibility she was the daughter of Joseph's brother John, however. Joel can be ruled out, as his will in known and would certainly have mentioned Huldah or her children if they were his descendants. See Adams Co. 1860 census, p. 215.

Obituary found on the internet:
SMITH CAPT. JAMES L. SMITH (Age 71) MSC, USN (Ret.) Beloved husband of Barbara B. Smith, died May 2, 2010 at Park West Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Justin Smith. Survivors, among others deeply mourning his passing, are: his mother, Lena J. "Jackie" Smith; sister, Mary K. Morrill and family (in Missouri); sister-in-law Linda C. Kean and family (in Maryland, S. Africa and Florida); step-mother-in-law, Elizabeth Harcourt and family; extended loving family in multiple states. CAPT Smith took great pride in the fact that he served in the United States Navy for thirty-eight years, and distinguished himself by rising from the lowest enlisted rate to the grade of Captain. During this time, he was blessed with a growing number of officers junior to him, and enlisted personnel, who sought him out to be mentored; served three voluntary years in Vietnam; and as Commanding Officer of the Naval Hospital in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, wore a "dual hat" as the Joint Task Force Officer during the Haitian "exodus" and "influx" into Cuba in 1991. In addition to serving God in his every day life, he participated in many church Committees and activities. As a testimony to his faith and love for his fellow man, he used his own funds to build a church in Vietnam. He was raised in Michigan, graduated from George Washington University, and received his Master's Degree from Central Michigan University, which he accomplished in ten months while working full time as the Medical Construction Liaison Officer for the renovation of the old and building of the new National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. CAPT Smith was a kind, loving, gentle, generous, patriotic and unselfish Christian who put God, his wife and family, and his country above everything else. He will be so sorely missed by his family and friends, leaving a great void that can never be filled. Due to complications at Arlington National Cemetery, he won''t be laid to rest until early September. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation , 30 E. 33rd Street, New York, New York 10016. This family needs further research.
The family free on FamilySearch.org may be mostly correct. It shows James Polk Smith b. 28 jan 1844, but places his birth in Monticello, Dickerson Tp., Lewis Co., Missouri, where he died in 1920. All other records say he was born in Ohio. This tree makes him the son of Arthur E. Smith and Orpha Hull, from Adams Co., Ohio, who later lived in Brown Co., Illinois, from an Irish Smith family who settled in Adams, Co., Ohio. The tree shows eight children, with birth dates from 1864 (before the marriage of the parents) to 1885, all in Brown Co. Interestingly, the tree includes a photo showing six couples, consisting of John A. McCoy and his wife Nancy Perry, and five of their children: Hanna M..., Lucy, Elmina, George, and "Matt" (=Martha?).
Census:
1920: Highland Tp., Lewis Co., Missouri: James P. Smith age 76 is living with "Herbie" Smith family (this is Kirby).
1910, Dickerson Tp., Lewis Co., Missouri: James P? Smith and Melmina J. Smith.
1900 is very faded, Dickerson Tp., Lewis Co., Missouri: Jas ? P Smith, b. January 1844; Elmina b. March 1844 ? , mother of 11 children, of whom 7 are living; son William A. b. December 1876; daughter Lucy C. b. March 1885 (age 15), and son George T. b. September 1887 (age 12).
1890, Highland Tp., Lewis Co., Missouri, Veterans' Schedules, James P. Smith, Private, Co. E, 1st Ohio Artillery, service May, 1862 to April, 1863, disability chronic diarrhea for 25 years. (Thus, there should be a pension file!)
1880, Elkhorn Tp., Brown Co., Illinois: James Smith 35; Mina 34; Elizabeth ,15; John A. 13; James S., 11. Abby A., 8; Kurby ? , 6; William A., 3; Nancy, 1. Evidently the daughter Sabra, whose birth on 15 jan 1881 is recorded in Brown Co. (on microfilm of county birth index), died young. While the birth records (or the index to them) appear to be complete from about 1878, the last two known children, Lucy and George, do not appear, and we therefore suppose they were not born in Brown Co., even though the 1900 census reports that they were born in Illinois.
So far, this family has not been located in the 1870 census. They are not in Elkhorn Tp. or Lee Tp. in that year.
An entry in the Lewis County Journal (Monticello, Missouri) on 23 mar 1923 notes that "James P. Smith is spending a few weeks with his son W. A. Smith and family." In the same newspaper, Friday, 29 jun 1923, his obituary appeared: "James P. Smith Dies at State Hospital. Word was received here Wednesday morning by W. A. Smith that his father had died Tuesday night at the hospital at Fulton, where he had been the past three months. The body was taken to Louisiana where it was met by Tebo Smith who accompanied it to Lewistown where the funeral services were held Thursday at ten o'clock. James P. Smith was born in Ohio 76 years ago. He spent the first part of his life in that state and in Illinois, coming to Lewis County 31 years ago. He was a farmer and had lived in the western part of the county since coming from Illinois. He was a member of the Baptist Church and had been a faithful member. About two years ago he suffered a paralytic stroke which affected his mind and he continued to grow more feeble until death came. His wife died in 1910 and five sons and a daughter are left to mourn him: John of Tolona, W. A. of Monticello, Tebo of Louisiana, Jim of Lewistown, and Mrs. Lucy Covey of Montana. The family has the sympathy of many friends and other relatives." Presumably, "Tebo" is the son listed in the 1900 census as George T., and the place is the city of Louisiana in Pike Co., Missouri. Fulton is the county seat of Callaway Co., Missouri. Tolona and Monticello are in Lewis Co., Missouri. The date of death was 27 jun 1923, according to the death certficate, from acute dysentery, but the date does not agree with the obituary, which appears to place it on the preceding day, 26 jun 1923. According to the obituary, he came to Lewis Co., Missouri about 1882
