In Lyon, the surname starts out as Crotier or Crottier, then acquires the second surname Desmarest, and by 1680 appears mostly as Demarest. A Pierre Crottier Demarest was "advocat en Parlement" there in the 1670's, son of Jean Crottier Demarest, "secretaire de la chambre du Roy et son gentilhomme servant", also residing in Lyon. Barthelemi, another son of Jean, appears at a Léorat baptism in Annonay in 1673. There is a large gap between the first and second children of Jean, so perhaps we should look at early Lyon baptisms.

Son of the late Claude du Croux.
This seems to be the Phebe McDougall living with Alexander R. McDougall in the 1850 census, Argyle, p. 158, age 75. On same page is James McDougall family with daughter Phebe. This is the reason these families are placed here. There were at least 2 daughters, not yet definitely identified, but one was surely the Nancy McDougall who married Benjamin Reynolds, her parentage listed in her death record 18 mar 1895 in Mower Co., MN.
In 1850 and 1855, Phebe was living with her son Alexander R. McDougall in Argyle.
[7126] age at death 80 years.
Daughter of W. P. Croxton and Nancy Nelson of Schuyler Co., IL.
