Both Alfred Shorter (Studies in the History of Papermaking in Britain, 1993) and D. Coleman (Paper Making in the British Isles, 1971) identify Samuel Galliott as a master paper maker working with Andrew Johannot in the 1690's at Eynesford, Kent. In addition, Coleman (p. 76) says that Samuel Galliott and Richard Parry (1738) estimated 600 paper mills operating in England and Wales, but gives no reference for this. From this we infer that Samuel removed from Eynesford, perhaps to Wales, and died after 1738.
The reference to Samuel Galliott and Richard Parry has now been located. They proposed a change in the way paper mills were taxed, and an analysis of this proposal was presented to the Treasury Board in Whitehall on February 9, 1738/39 (Treasury Board Papers CCC, no. 7 — see the calendar of Treasury papers on the British History Online web site). The original documents have not been examined; it is possible they might reveal where Samuel Galliott resided at that time. From the date, it is also possible that this reference concerns Samuel Jr., the son of the present Samuel born in 1696, but if so, he must have followed in his father's trade.
Minister at Gimel 1640-1648. The registers for this period are lost, and no reference to David and his wife are found in later registers at Gimel. No birth record for David has been found in the area around Grandson, where Jaques Galtier was minister 1591-1628. If David was really minister at Gimel up to 1648, then the child born to Estienne Bosset, second husband of Marguerite Gélieu, in 1643, must refer to an earlier wife of Bosset. The records at Morges are quite incomplete in this period.
