Adams County, Ohio records: "Dec the 21, 1831 Mr. Darlington Plees let Leban Smith have licens for I am eplied that he should have my dautor Mary." (signed) Alexander McCoy. On back of slip of paper, "John Smith to Mary McCoy". The name Leban may be nothing but a misreading of John. This document proves that Alexander is indeed the father of the Mary and thus of the others named in the estate papers of Alexander McCoy, Jr. in Brown Co., IL. Marriage permission implies Mary was under age of 18 in 1831, though perhaps not necessarily.

Mary is last known living with the James A. Smith family in the 1880 census. Did she remain with them, or did she perhaps stay with one of her other daughters? [6511] 1880 census lists parents b. Ire. and MD, as expected for Alexander McCoy Sr. and his (2d) wife from Maryland. Possibly located in Brown Co., IL in 1880 with complicated household? Possibly born about 1814, from 1850 census.
[6512] Known to be living circa 1870, when she signed receipt for share of estate of Alexander McCoy, son of her brother George McCoy, believed to be the same person found in 1880 census, Brown Co., IL.
[14988] Marriage book 3, p. 269, and marriage license book 3 dated 22 dec 1831. Also permission from Alexander McCoy dated 21 dec 1831 -- the only surviving document that he definitely wrote.
