A family record gave us the name Turley Southard, but without any details. We strongly suspect this is Robert F. (=Finley?) Southard (of Basking Ridge, NJ?), who married Joanna Baird in Someret Co., NJ 02 mar 1842. This couple, if this is indeed the correct Johanna, seems not to have had any children of their own, but Robert may have had a son Newton (Isaac Newton Southard, born 08 ocdt 1839 at Basking Ridge, died 08 mar 1869?) from a previous marriage. They are in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Newark, Essex Co., NJ. Robert F. appears to have remarried to a woman named Harriet and moved to La Salle Co., IL by 1870.

The Spencers were an ancient family of Bedfordshire, where some branches were owners of manors. The branch from which the American family descended was seated in the vicinity of Stotfold.
Baptized at St. Mary's Parish, Stotfold.
Date of death given here is 17 Mar. 1645. Other references do not include a death date.
The American founder of the family....came with his older brothers, William, Thomas, and Michael, and other relatives to New England, about 1632. They settled first in Cambridge, Mass. and Michael and Gerard removed by 1637 to Lynn. Gerard was made a freeman, 9 Mar. 1636/7. He served on several juries, and in 1653 administered the estate of Michael. He was a ferryman at Lynn, 1639; was Sargeant as early as 1655, and confirmed Ensign of the military company at Lynn, June 1656.
Will dated 17 Sep. 1683; inventory taken on 29 June 1685. Sons Daniel Brainard and William Spencer, Administrators of the estate.
Married Hannah _____, who died before Sep. 1683 (probably earlier). Married second, Rebecca (Porter) Clark, daughter of John and Ann (White) Porter of Windsor, and widow of John Clark of Saybrook.
Gerard appears to have been married at least twice, first to "Hannah" about 1635 and then "Hannah Hills", who may have been one and the same......The name of Hannah Hills appears only once in the IGI records when Samuel, the eighth child was born. (There are genealogies in print that name Hannah Hills as the wife, but, to my knowledge, no real proof has been found).

This book is in error regarding the parents of Grace Spencer....she was often mistaken for her cousin, Grace, who was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Willey/Hungerford/Blatchford.
