Seigneur de Combremont-le-Grand. He succeeded his father at Avoyer at Payerne, 1557-1562, and took this position again 1573-1574, after the death of Jean Amey Gachet. A glass panel with the arms of Mestral de Rue, apparently from the parish church of Payerne, last known in private hands, bears the inscription "Jehan Mestral Schultheiss zu Petterlingen He zu Combremondt 1561" (A. de Molin, "A propos d'un vitrail vaudois de 1561", Revue historique vaudoise, 20:155-158 (1912). The panel is believed to have been executed by Mathys Walthard of Bern (1517-1601), which presumably has something to do with the fact that the inscription is in German rather than French. Another panel from Payerne, last known in the Mestral family, dates from 1627 and commemorates Jean Rodolf Mestral, grandson of Jean.
