After a period of apprenticeship 1714-1719, he began to develop methods of manufacturing artificial gems by adding various metals to glass. He was in Paris by 1724, and refined his craft to the point where he could advertise as "maître orfèvre privilégié du roi". The use of the word "strass" to designate high-quality artificial gems first appeared in the Dictionnaire de l'Académie in 1740, and it is still in use today in many languages. His work became very fashionable in Paris, and he became quite wealthy. An example of his work is a jeweled Masonic cross at the Musée d'Oeuvre Notre-Dame, Strasbourg. In 1752, he ceded the rights to his "pierres de Strass" to Georges Michel Bapst, who later married his niece Susanne Elizabeth Strass, daughter of his brother Philippe Jacques Strass.

He was the Lutheran minister at Eckartsweier, near Strasbourg but on the German side of the Rhine, before coming to Wolfisheim in June, 1691—the date when he begins recording baptisms, marriage, and deaths in the registers there. His marriage was celebrated at the "Temple Neuf" in Strasbourg. His birthdate is computed from his age at death.
In spite of the fact that most of his children were born while he was pastor at Wolfisheim, we did not find their baptisms there.

The original baptisms performed by Johann Strass at Wolfisheim, including those of most of his children, were recorded in a volume catalogued as 3E 551/2 at the Archives Départementales de Bas-Rhin. This volume contains the original signatures of the parents, the minister, and the sponsors of each baptism, for the years 1686-1723. Another volume, labeled 3E 551/1 contains copies of some of the same records, along with baptisms 1645-1701, marriages 1645-1689, burials 1635-1691, and other records. 3E 551/1 contains a copy of the baptism of Maria Magdalena Strass, but the original is lacking from volume 3E 551/2. It must have been recorded on a loose slip of paper that became separated from the rest of the volume after the copy was made. Except for this record, the copies in 3E 551/1 appear to be accurate.

The Burnand genealogy says she was Catherine Strähl, daughter of a pastor at Morat. There is no Strähl or Strehl, however, in the list of ministers at Morat in the compilation of Gilbert Marion ("Paroisses et pasteurs de la Broye au XVIIIe siècle", Bibliothèque historique vaudoise vol. 101, 1990). The marriage record at St. James, Westminster calls her Mary Strehl. We have not investigated whether the entry mentions a marriage license or other details. There is a Swiss Strähl or Sträl family, but we are not aware of any branch of it that was in London at that time.
