The name is often abbreviated in a way that could be either Anselmus or Ansermus. Anselmus is the standard modern version of the name (e.g., Saint Anselm), but the spelling Ansermus is also found in the original documents.

His father is named in a reconnaissance dated 06 sep 1443 (ACV Aa 12/4, no. 596), and in several transactions record circa 1408 by Petrus de Trevaul (ACV Dp 108/1), at which time Johannodus was already dead and Ansermus or Anselmus an adult. His marriage contract with Johanneta Coquard was recorded by the same notary on 04 jul 1409 (Dp 108/1, fol. 70v).

By 1472, we find Mermeta, daughter of the late Ansermus Ansel, as the wife of Anthonius Mecza, and in 1474, Marguereta, daughter of Johannes de Issy of Leschieres, as the widow of Ansermus, by whom he had a son Guigo, who is apparently an adult at this point (various transactions recorded by Johannes de Trevaul, ACV Dp 107).

In the registers of Petrus Moron (père, ACV Dp 71), we find further specifications: Anthonius de Planchia recognizes a cense that he owed to the late Ansermus Ansel son of Johannodus, who has died, and so now the cense is owed to Johannes de Trevaul, guardian of the children of the late Ansermus and his wife Marguereta. The children's names are not clearly legible, but they include Jacobus, Mermeta, and Janna (Dp 71/1, attached at fol. 7v), 12 aug 1457. At fol. 30 of the same register, dated 11 nov 1459, a similar transaction, this time very legible, shows that name of the missing child is Guigo.

There is so far nothing to indicate that there were two men called Ansermus Ansel, in spite of the very long range of dates, but if there were, they were both sons of a Johannodus Ansel. He died sometime between 1450 (when he made a reconnaissance for property in Payerne, ACV Fn 51, fol. 151v) and 1457.
