He emigrated with his second wife, Elizabeth, and family in 1632, and became the first pastor of the church at Charlestown, MA.

He left the church in 1636 and settled as a planter in New Haven in 1639. In 1643 he was sent as missionary to Virginia with John Knowles and William Thompson and remained there until banished by Gov. Berkeley; then returned to New Haven, and by 1648 returned to England. He became minister at Needham Market, 1650, and was ejected in 1662, following the Restoration. He continued a nonconformist preacher until his death.
