A document of 02 feb 1676 (Pierre Dutoit, notary at Vevey), unfortunately not clearly legible, mentions a partage involving the Jean Dutoit and his late wife Annelle Demierre, and her sister Christine Demierre. Now, this is surely the same Christine Demierre who appears as the wife of a Pierre Dutoit (not yet identified) in the church registers of Vevey, but this does not settle the question of how Jean is related to Pierre. (Related documents 06 mar 1678 and 14 may 1679 by same notary.) Parentage unknown.
This Jean has been hard to tie to the rest of the clan. He is the second husband of Marie Fudri, and noted as conseiller about 1675-1677, but shortly after his marriage to Marie he is called "hoste", or innkeeper (Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon, 19 aug 1659). He had a brother Jaques, deceased by 1665 leaving children (nephews of Jean). His marriage contract also notes that he had a cousin Daniel François Veyre. He apparently had a brother Philippe, with whom Jean Dutoit the conseiller appears in 1675 settling their joint inheritance from their father, who is not named. A mention of Jean Dutoit conseiller in 1677 is definitely him, because he is acting for his step-daughter Anne, recently married to Denis Besançon (Denis Burnand, notary at Moudon, 21 mar 1677).
The parentage of Jean the hoste and conseiller thus depends on the identity of his relatives. Documents recorded by Abraham Faucherres, notary at Moudon, 07 oct 1675, concern Jean Dutoit and his brother Philippe Dutoit regarding their inheritance from their father. One of these documents calls Jean Dutoit conseiller. The same notary recorded a document on 09 mar 1675, in which "Spectable et Sçavant Abraham Dutoit" settles his inheritance with his brother Philippe Dutoit. It seems reasonable to assume that this document concerns the same Philippe, and therefore that Abraham is also a brother of Jean the conseiller.
However, another document, recorded 16 sep 1660 by Pierre Gavin, notary at Moudon, involves and agreement between "Spectable Abraham Dutoit", son of the late Jean Dutoit and student in philosophy at Lausanne, and his brother Philippe. There is also a document of 01 jun 1661 involving Jaques Dutoit, maréschal, and his brother Philippe, presumably the same Philippe brother of "Spectable" Abraham. It was certainly possible in those days to be a student of philosophy and to passed the examination to enter higher studies by age 14, but if he were really so young in 1660, he should have been represented by a guardian ("tuteur"). Thus, the Abraham named in this record should have been born no later than about 1640, and likewise for his brother. Whoever they are, they cannot be sons of Jean Dutoit the conseiller, as he was still alive as late as 1677. And the Philippe from 1660 cannot be the Philippe who was the son of Pierre Dutoit and Jeanne de Palézieux, because the latter Philippe was not born until 1659. But who was the "Spectable" Abraham, and can we be sure he is not the same man cited in 1675? And when was Abraham André Dutoit, the minister who served at Cotterd, Syens, and elsewhere, ordained?
Since Abraham André Dutoit, the minister at Cotterd, would have been only 13 in 1675, it does not seem possible that he would have been called "Spectable et Sçavant" at that time, nor could he have entered into an agreement by himself. So, the transaction of 09 mar 1675 probably involves Abraham Dutoit the schoolmaster and his brother Philippe, rather than children of Pierre Dutoit and Jeanne de Palézieux, even though Pierre certainly died about that time. This leaves only the documents dated 07 oct 1675 as establishing that Jean Dutoit the conseiller had a brother Philippe.
The minister Abraham André Dutoit's parentage is established by his relation to his brother Philippe, son of Pierre Dutoit and Jeanne de Palézieux, and we can identify a very likely baptism attended by André Falconnet, evidently a relative of Jeanne de Palézieux (dit Falconnet -- these two surnames are always interchangeable, and Jeanne herself is sometimes called Falconnet in the church records at Moudon). That leaves the matter of Jean the conseiller still unresolved; it is necessary to know which Philippe, if any, was his brother. It is possible that the answer may yet be found by reviewing the various properties bought and sold by these parties beginning in 1660.
Now, Jean the hoste conseiller seems to be the only Jean son of a Jean Dutoit (except for one at Chesalles) active in the mid-17th Century. Therefore, he may have been the subject of the baptism of 15 apr 1620, which specifies Jean son of Jean Dutoit of Chavannes, with one of the sponsors Jeanne daughter of Daniel Dutoit. As late as 1617, Jean Dutoit the couturier, son of Claude, seems to have been living in Chavannes, but there may be other possibilities. The Daniel Dutoit in question is also uncertain, because there were two early Daniels of the same generation, and no children known for one of them, Daniel son of François, who married Susanne Veyre.
A number of documents show that he was quite active after his marriage to Marie Fudri, perhaps because of the additional capital available to him as a result of the marriage.
Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon, 19 aug 1659: Jean Dutoit, hoste, step-father of the children of the late Gabriel Dutoit, is owed by the heirs of the late Jean Jaques Cler, bourgeois de Moudon, for a debt due to the late Gabriel. (Does this concern an actual Cler/Clerc family, or is this a reference to Dutoit dit "au Clerc"?)
Pierre Gavin, notary at Moudon, 17 sep 1660: David Dutoit, couturier of Moudon, confesses he has received of Jean Dutoit, hoste of the said place, in the name of the heirs of the late Gabriel Dutoit, the sum of 188 florins from an obligation due to the late Gabriel from 1651, recorded by Eg. Giraudet.
Pierre Gavin, notary at Moudon, 11 feb 1661: Jean Dutoit, hoste, acting in the name of the children of the late Gabriel Dutoit, rents a property for 9 years to Antoine Dutoit of Chavannes.
[they make a settlement.]

[If the original debts can be located, we might learn the identity of Jean's brother Jaques. The names of the children of Jaques are not given in the document of 1665.]
Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon, 01 jul 1669: Marriage contract between Abraham son of Spectable Guillaume DeMont, schoolmaster and bourgeois of Moudon, and Marie, daughter of the late Gabriel Dutoit, in his lifetime hoste and bourgeois de Moudon, represented by her step-father the conseiller Jean Dutoit and her mother Marie Fudri, and Marie's brother Pierre Dutoit.
There are some additional documents mentioning Jean Dutoit, conseiller, but the context has so far not permitted us to conclude with absolute certainty that this is the same man. However, nothing has surfaced so far to suggest a contrary hypothesis.

(ID #I3853)
Biographical details from La France Protestant (2d. Ed.) and Livre du Recteur de l'Académie de Genève show that he served as minister at Le Cheylard and Vallon, Ardèche, France, then in the Pays de Vaud at L'Isle 1673-1681 and Rolle 1682-1691, where he died. His final tenure in France (Le Cheylard, 1669-1670) was terminated because he was a foreigner, and he is identified as bourgeois of both Moudon and Vevey. He was enrolled at the Académie de Lausanne as early as 1636. See also Arnaud's Histoire des Protestants du Vivarais et du Velay (1888). The existence of a debt for which he and his wife were creditors dated 01 jan 1692 is signaled in a document of Philippe Favre, notary at Moudon 08 jul 1704, proving that he did not die in 1691 as indicated above, but likely soon after.
It seems most likely that he should have been the son of Pierre Dutoit and Salomé Rubattel baptised in 1618, but we first thought that Jean Dutoit was the one who married Annelle Demierre. It may be that we can eventually prove that the Jean Dutoit who married Annelle Demierre was not the son of Pierre. For the moment, we note that Salomé was herself the daughter of a minister, and she had at least two brothers who were notaries. Her son François Dutoit was a notary, and his son Pierre, also a notary, recognized the close (but unspecified) relationship to Jean Dutoit the minister. Pierre's daughter Jeanne Marie married Jean Mathieu, grandson of Jean Dutoit the minister. If our analysis is correct, the Jean Mathieu and Jeanne Marie were second cousins, a permissible degree of consanguinity under the strict rules of the Bernese authorities. One difficulty, however, is that the other person stated to be a relative of Gaspard, the relationship given in the same document of 27 jul 1719 recorded by Pierre Dutoit, was Jean Benoit Dutoit the elder (b. 1657), who appears to be a fourth cousin of Pierre (these two men were giving their consent for Gaspard's widow to sell his estate in France). If such remote relationships were recognized at that time in Vevey, the argument for the parentage of the minister Jean Dutoit rests mainly on the social class and professional relationships of his supposed parents. It is also possible that Pierre felt the need to assist Gaspard's widow, and, in order to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, called in the first available Dutoit in Vevey to provide legitimacy to the required document. Pierre had already recorded Jean Benoit's testament in 1708, so the two men knew each other.
The circumstances under which he had to leave his ministry in France have been repeated in several published accounts, but the original document has not previously been identified. The records of the reformed synods in "Série TT" of the French National Archives are available on microfilm through the Family History Library. TT 232 (FHL microfilm #1344541) contains records of a synod held in December, 1670 at Annonay. Dutoit was not present, being "indisposed", but he and the minister Detournes were the subject of an order to leave France: (19 dec 1670) "Detournes et Dutoict — Mr. le commissaire a reprézenté à la compagnie qu'il lui a esté remise par M. de Bezons, Intentant, une lettre de cachet du 15 novembre dernier adressée à mondit seigneur de Bezons par lequelle il est ordonné qu'incontinent apres laditte lettre receue, il aye à empecher lesdits sieurs Detournes et Dutoict, ministres de la province, de contignuer le service de leur ministere dans les Esglises de Vivaretz dont ils sont ministres, attendu qu'ils sont estrangers..." A message containing this news was dispatched to Dutoit, and his reply was recorded by the synod 24 dec 1670. He stated that he was prepared to obey the order, even though he had a brevet of 11 jul 1667 permitting him to exercise his ministry in spite of the fact that he was a foreigner. The synod provided him with a letter of recommendation. Very soon after this synod, a royal order dissolved the consistory of Annonay and appointed a new one.

There is some suspicion that his children Jean Pierre and Daniel, at least, worked as farmers (grangers) at Démoret. From the few mentions that seem to indicate this, we make the identification that the Jean Pierre whose children are baptised 1703-1710 is the same person. An agreement between brothers and sisters Jaques, Daniel, Marie (with husband David Vulliens), and Jeanne Dutoit (husband Jean Jaton of Villard-Mendraz), 31 may 1728 (S. Briod, notary), concerns his children.

Apparently this is the Jean Dutoit who owned property next to that of his father Jean Jaques Dutoit, chaudronnier, 21 jul 1732 (J. P. Gindre, notary). He is named as first cousin of Louise, daughter of the late Philippe Dutoit 11 jan 1736 (Samuel Briod, notary). So far, we have no clear record of him after this date.

Mentioned as Jehannod in a "reconnaissance" by his brother Jaques (Fn 347 fol. 31v, 22 mar 1592). His own reconnaissance in the same terrier appears to be the one on fol. 363v, dated 01 nov 1595, for "Jehan filz de feuz Jaques Duthey", which mentions his brothers Jaques, Pierre, and Antoine. He is the only Dutoit from Chavannes listed in Fn 347 who does not have a corresponding reconnaissance in the terrier Fn 349.
