Family 1 :
  1.  Pierre VALLIEZ (dates unknown)
  2.  André VALLIEZ (dates unknown)
  3.  Claude VALLIEZ (dates unknown)
  4.  Bernarde VALLIEZ (dates unknown)
  5.  Nicolas VALLIEZ (dates unknown)

The main source of information on this family is a notarial register ACV DR 10 from Urbain Campod, covering 11573-1578, in which there are several transactions involving a Jean Valliez of Lavigny and his children. The children named in these transactions differ from the list of children of the better known Jean Valier of Aubonne, but the information about the two families is fragmentary. In particular, there seems not to be a definitive list of heirs for either family.

One suggestive piece of evidence that this "Valliez" was in fact the same Jean Valier is found in the terrier ACV Fi 171, for the charitable hospital of Nyon, commissaire Jaques du Coster, beginning in 1592. On fol. 99, there is a reconnaissance for Claude Baud (whose additional relationships are tantalizingly summarized in another reconnaissance on fol. 94v, mentioning a Françoise Reverdil), dated 06 aug 1593, in which certain sums or properties are mentioned that were sold to him by "Egrege Jehan Valier", and that Valier acquired as a result of the "discution" (liquidation for debts) of the estate of Bernard Dunant for sums owed to Gasparde Dumont, wife of the said Valier and previously the wife of the said Bernard Dunant, these developments having occurred sometime between 1547 and 1593. However, Fi 171 apparently does not name any of the children of this couple, and does not seem to mention properties at Lavigny.

Surname unclear. In will of James Whiteside, I read Buchart, but abstract says Buckark. Caroline Buskirk (widow) lived next to Robert Whitesides in 1850 census. Will of Ann Isabella Whitesides, 1851, wife of Caroline's brother Robert, mentions George and James Van Buskirk, so I accept this version of the name. Possibly related to David Van Buskirk d. 1828 New Windsor NY, his will witnessed by Archibald and DeWitt Slaughter, mentions 6 sons and brother Gabriel.

For many years, we were unable to find any definite mention of George after the 1860 census. We are grateful to Joyce Watanabe for the discovery that George Van Buskirk, born in Cincinnati, settled in Marysville, Yuba Co., California about 1864. It appears that his brother James was also there, though from the birth places of his children, he probably arrived in California after 1873.

The roster of the Corinth chapter of the G.A.R., Marysville, California (1886), shows that George Van Buskirk had served in the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (other records add Company K), and his brother James had served in the 27th Regiment (Company K). Both are apparently buried in a family plot in the Marysville City Cemetery.

The yubaroots.com web site has extracted data from many sources, including official death records. They show that George Van Buskirk died of surgical shock on 12 jul 1917. Significantly, this record places his birth at Lockland, Hamilton Co., Ohio on 22 feb 1841.

Newspaper extracts:

VAN BUSKIRK, GEORGE

Marysville Daily Appeal — 7/12/1917, p8 - George VanBuskirk Dies After Operation - George VanBuskirk died at 2:45 o'clock this morning following a serious operation. He was 76 years old. He was not strong enough to stand the shock. The body is at Kelly Brothers. - George VanBuskirk is near death at the Rideout Hospital at 2 o'clock this morning, it was expected that he would live through the night. - George VanBuskirk is a pioneer of the valley. He came here more than 50 years ago. For 25 years he was blind. Last October he was operated upon by the Green Brothers in San Francisco and regained his sight. - His friends hoped he would have 20 years left to him in which he would enjoy the scenes which had been unseen to him for a quarter of a century. That is one reason why his sudden serious illness has caused everyone to feel a great sympathy for the man who blinded was allowed to see only long enough to face - as the doctors now feel he is facing - the end of his life. - George VanBuskirk is the father of Henry and Theodore VanBuskirk and of three grown daughters, two of whom are married.

Marysville Daily Appeal — 7/15/1917, p5 - George VanBuskirk Honored at Grave by Grand Army Veterans - George VanBuskirk was laid to rest yesterday. - The funeral services took place from the late residence on B street with Reverend Rich of the First Presbyterian church officiating. - Many were the friends of the deceased who came to pay their last respects before the body was carried to its final resting place. - A great wreath of flowers brought and sent by friends from far and near betokened the esteem in which George VanBuskirk was held throughout the valley. - At the cemetery the local post of the G.A.R. participated in the final ceremonies and the High School cadets fired a volley over the grave. - The pall-bearers were: Mayor Harry Hyde, Richard Klempp, Phil Divver, John Watson, Charles Becker, B. L. Gregory, John Russell, Dan Bryant, Charles Laney, Sheriff Charles J. McCoy. - Kelly Brothers had charge of the funeral.

Marysville Daily Appeal — 7/18/1917, p4 - George VanBuskirk Leaves $39,000 to His Heirs - In his will the late George VanBuskirk bequeathed $39,000 in cash and realty to his heirs, seven children and five grand-children. - The will has been filed for probate in the Superior Court with Henry VanBuskirk, a son, and Mrs. Nettie Tyndall, a daughter named as executors according to the will, the estate is comprised of about $9,000 in cash and $30,000 in realty. - Miss Emma VanBuskirk, the only unmarried daughter was given the home place on B street and the five grandchildren were left $500.00 each, while the balance is to be divided equally between the seven children of the deceased. - They are Miss Emma VanBuskirk, Henry VanBuskirk, Theodore VanBuskirk, Mrs. Carrie Chapman, Marysville; Mrs. Ida Hart and Mrs. Nettie Tyndall of San Francisco; Mrs. Matilda Shayer, Pittsburg, Contra Costa county.

HENRY VAN BUSKIRK

An orchardist whose reputation for wide and valuable experience and practical, up-to-date ideas and methods is in itself an asset such as many would wish to possess, is Henry Van Buskirk, of Marysville, in which historic city he was born, on March 31, 1874, the son of George and Bertha (Newman) Van Buskirk, esteemed pioneers of influence. George Van Buskirk, the father, was a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, and came to Marysville in 1864. He set out from Pennsylvania for California, and first pitched his tent at Sacramento, later removing to Marysville, where he engaged in staging, worked around horses, and after a while worked for Dave Knight, and was with the Gas Works for a number of years. Then he embarked in the wood and coal business, which he followed for thirty years. When he retired, it was not because of old age, but on account of failing eyesight. He was blind, in fact, for twenty-one years, and then regained his eyesight. By this time he had acquired a large strip of property on B Street, in Marysville. Mrs. Van Buskirk’s parents were New Yorkers, and she came to California with them when she was two years of age; and here she was married to Mr. Van Buskirk. She died in 1897, the mother of the following children: Henry, Theodore, Emma, Nettie, Ida, Carrie, who became Mrs. Chapman, and Tillie.

Barney Van Buskirk, as Henry Van Buskirk is familiarly known by his many friends and acquaintances, attended the public schools in Marysville and then, for about twenty years, was in business in the old home town. When he took up orcharding, he went in for the raising of peaches. He now has seventy-five acres set out to that fruit, and the orchard is said to be one of the finest in the county.

In San Francisco, Henry Van Buskirk was married to Miss Nellie Devine, a popular lady of that city, who has come to share with him his popularity in the fraternal circles of the Eagles. One child, a son named George William Bernard, has blessed their union. Mr. Van Buskirk has always been fond of boxing and baseball, and he particularly enjoys outdoor life and sports. He is a Republican and stands by that party’s platforms as being the best for fostering American industry.
