1584: "Toni Mayor"? 1599: A different notary Antoine Mayor appears in registers at Yens as Châtelain and resident, son Jean François baptised there in 1603 (date unclear, might be 1601). Testament recorded by Ege. Jaques Baudin 1595 (according to a document of Claude Mayor, notary, 14 aug 1617), gave a legacy to Marguerite Mayor his sister, mother of David Mayor, this legacy evidently coming to members of the Dunant family as well as David after Marguerite's death. Thus, there seem to be two Anthoine Mayors, one dying before 16 jul 1595 (ACV DB 26/8 fol. 18v), the other the Châtelain of Yens still alive somewhat later.

The Pierre Mayor of Ballens who was not the son of François, and whose sons were Anthoine and Michel, may have been the brother of Humbert Mayor. This is suggested by a transaction recorded by Claude Mayor, notary, 13 dec 1590, wherein Anthoine Mayor, evidently the same one who was involved with the Dunant family that year, sells to Claude son of the late Claude Monod of Ballens his interest in land owned jointly with the hospital of Morges and with Michel Mayor and Humbert Mayor. It is known that Anthoine's father left his real property to his two sons in 1570, so it appears that the property must have been held before 1570 by Humbert and Pierre. This relationship is confirmed in the terriers, where Humbert, son of Ottonin, appears as the uncle of the notaries Anthoine and Michel, sons of Pierre Mayor.

The Anthoine who died after 1603 was not the one whose wife was Gabrielle, identified as noble Gabrielle de Mont in a document of 25 mar 1603 recorded by Jean Barral, notary of Morges. This document involves Gabrielle's son Aron and his paternal uncle Michel Mayor notary of Lausanne. The document is very difficult to read, and therefore possibly misinterpreted in some respects.

A further complication, or perhaps a clarification, is found in a terrier of 1573 relating to property of the former foundation for the "messe de purgatoire" at Aubonne, whose property was managed for the benefit of the city of Aubonne after the Reformation. Among the property that was inventoried in this terrier (ACV Fh 158), there is a "recognoissance" by Jaques Mayor of Aubonne, Blaise De La Pierre of Aubonne, and Anthoine Mayor of Ballens, all of whose wives were daughters of Laurent Darzier.

Louis de Charrière (in "Les dynastes de Mont, soit des Monts, seconde maison", Mémoires et documents publiés par la société d'histoire de la Suisse Romande 28:112, 1875) suggests that Gabrielle must have been either the daughter or the sister of the last of the noble de Mont family, Jean de Mont, bourgeois of Aubonne. Further explorations of the long series of terriers for Aubonne will probably clarify this problem.

Among the documents recorded by Claude Mayor of Ballens are several that appear to distinguish between "Egrège" Antoine Mayor, bourgeois d'Aubonne, and "Discret" Antoine Mayor de Ballens. Both men owned property at Ballens. At least a few of these transactions involve both Antoines, so they are clearly distinct persons. "Discret" Antoine and his brother Pierre were sons of Jaques Mayor, illegitimate son of Pierre. "Egrège" Antoine and his brother Michel were sons of the Pierre who died in 1570.

A further instance where both of the Antoines are involved in a single transaction is a reconnaissance dated 24 dec 1580 in the terrier ACV Fh 164 (fol. 68), compiled by the present Anthoine Mayor, commissaire, for property in the fief of Lavigny, recently obtained by Eg. François Forestey by exchange. The reconnaissance was made by Jaques Mayor for his children Michel, Jean, and Jeanne by his late wife Pernette Darzier, and also for Antoine his brother, whose wife was Françoise Darzier.

[2884] A document of Claude Mayor notary notes transaction involving Anthoine Mayor and David, Zacharie, and Pierre Dunand, bro A document of Claude Mayor notary notes transaction involving Anthoine Mayor and David, Zacharie, and Pierre Dunand, brothers, 06 oct 1590. This may be a marriage settlement.

  2.  Susanne MAYOR (b. bef 1592)
  3. +Jean François MAYOR (bp. 18 APR 1603, d. bef 1658)

This is apparently the one who is identified as "Discret" Antoine Mayor, and possibly the one who was Châtelain of Yens about 1603. The earliest record indicating "Discret Antoine Mayor de Ballens" is one dated 13 sep 1585 (ACV DB 26/5, fol. 94), which we interpret as signifying that Antoine had reached the age of majority, 25 years. On that occasion, he was purchasing property from Egrège Antoine Mayor.

The Châtelain of Yens was still alive 28 aug 1608, when he appears as a sponsor for the baptism at Bière of André son of Pierre Huguet and Jaquemaz Moré (Morel). He is mentioned in the church records of St. Livres and Yens on several occasions: at Yens 11 oct 1599, Anthoine Mayor Châtelain de Yens, sponsor at a baptism; baptism of Jean François son of Discret Antoine Mayor 18 apr 1601 at Yens; 28 aug 1608, Antoine Mayor Châtelain de Yens, sponsor for baptism at Bière;19 nov 1608, Susanne daughter of Antoine Mayor Châtelain de Yens, sponsor at a baptism in Yens, and thus apparently past the age of confirmation and therefore born before about 1593; 25 feb 1616, the same Susanne is mentioned again at Yens as the daughter of Antoine Mayor Châtelain de Yens, who was presumably therefore still alive as of that date. There are two mentions of Estiennaz, daughter of Antoine Mayor in 1604.

Apart from the fact that he was a joint owner, with his brothers François and Jaques, sons of Pierre Mayor, and with his cousins Claude, Louis, and François sons of Claude Mayor, of a vineyard at Aubonne "en Chevrajon" (1566, modern spelling Chivrageon, discussed more fully in the notes for his paternal ancestors), we have not been able to identify any other mention of his existence.

Father: _____ MAYOR (dates unknown)

Family 1 : Françoise DARZIER (d. aft 1580)

His parentage has not been established, apart from the fact that he seems to be a brother of the Jaques Mayor of Ballens who settled at Aubonne and who also married a daughter of Laurent Darzier. A "reconnaissance" of the heirs of Michel Mayor, son of this Jaques (ACV Fh 171, fol. 218, circa 1606), indicates that Antoine had lived at Monnaz (parish of Morges) when he made a reconnaissance of his own 18 sep 1581 (Fh 162, commissaires Jehan Marquis and Estienne Favre, for the former Priory of Etoy, not yet examined).

Aymonetus MAYOR       (ID #I16799)

(male)
Father: Girard MAYOR (d. bef 1455)

The existence of Aymonetus Mayor senior and junior is revealed in several terriers, as joint owners of a house in Aubonne, 1427-1438.

In Fh 119, 01 dec 1427, fols. 36v, we find that Aymonetus Maior of Ballens holds 2 poses of vineyards at Cheyvrajon, and a half-interest (medietas) of a house in burgo hospitalis (sometimes also described as in burgo interiori), and on fol. 37, on the same date, his brother Stephanodus Maior of Ballens holds the other half of the same house. Fh 119 served as the basis for the "quernet" Fh 4, a sort of summary of obligations of the Seigneur's vassals, compiled evidently a few years later, but no date is stated. In Fh 4, fols. 10v and 22, we find the same house, but now the joint tenants are Aymonetus Mayor de Ballens for the first half, and Aymonetus Mayor junior, his nephew, for the half that had previously been held by Stephanodus. Thus, Stephanodus had evidently died in the interim. The next terrier, Fh 5 (a nearly exact copy or summary of Fh 120), fols. 236v (07 jan 1438) and 254 (11 mar 1438), again includes the same house, still divided between Aymonetus Mayor and his nephew Aymonetus Mayor junior, and with a notation in the margin on fol. 254 (next to the description of the half of the house held by Aymonetus junior) indicating that the property was later held by Petrus Mayor and Aymonodus "his" (eius") son, which we interpret from the context as meaning that Petrus Mayor (perhaps meaning Petrus Mayor senior (alias de Vernay), son of Johanneta Mayor daughter of Aymonetus Mayor junior and Anthonius de Vernay held the half from Aymonetus Mayor senior, and Aymonodus (=Mondetus?) Mayor, son of Aymonetus Mayor junior, held the other half. Now, notations of this sort were often made by later commissaires during the process of preparing a new terrier about a generation later. We have not yet found this property in what appears to be the successor to the terriers Fh 120 and Fh 5, namely, Fh 123, compiled around 1455 by Petrus Mangie. The house might be described in one of the sections that we have not yet examined. Or, perhaps the notation refers to the next terrier in the sequence, compiled around 1470 by Johannes Vullieti, now apparently lost, but frequently cited in later terriers. Further study of the terriers may yield a more secure timeline and verify the relationships.

There are a number of additional references to Aymonetus Mayor between 1438 and about 1460, but without any indication of whether they refer to Aymonetus senior or junior. One possible interpretation is that Aymonetus senior had in fact died, and so there was no need to distinguish him from his nephew, who survived him. Also, there are no clear mentions of Mondetus before about 1460, which might be taken as circumstantial evidence that his father, apparently Aymonetus junior, was still alive, and thus there would be no need for Mondetus to be named as a reconnaissant or tenant. These vague citations include IB 295a/735 (1452, reconnaissances for property at Ballens subject to Johannes de Menthone), a mortgage on property at Ballens dated 17 nov 1449 (C XX 18/6), and several passages in Fh 123, including fol. 200 [197], 17 mar 1455, a parcel of 1 1/2 poses en Silliom held by Aymonetus Mayor in his own name, that had come from his paternal grandfather Girardus Mayor. If the passage is accurately stated, this would have to be Aymonetus Mayor junior, and the implication would be that Aymonetus senior had already died. There are additional sources for the holdings of the de Menthone family (the Co-seigneurie of Aubonne) that need to be examined in hopes of locating additional mentions of Aymonetus and his relatives.

As for the house at Aubonne, we found one later description that is probably the same house, in Fh 153, fol. 297, dated 13 mar 1566, at a time when the house was held by the Soudan family. The house had been held earlier by Claudaz, daughter of the late Pierre Pollet and wife of Claude Soudans, and this citation can be matched with Fh 137 fol. 850 and possibly also fol. 663, dated 07 feb 1508. In Fh 137, in Latin, we find that the property had been held "first" (at some indefinite date in the past) by Aymonetus and Petrus Mayor, and next (Latin deinde, but the French paraphrase of this in Fh 153 erroneously says precedemment !) by (quoting Fh 153 here) Pierre et Michel de Verney aultrement Mayor freres pour la moitié, and by Pierre Mayor le jeune et Pierre Sigoen son beaupere for the other half, a house in Aubonne "en la charriere de l'hospital au bourg dedans" (in the earlier Latin terriers, in burgo interiori), "jouxte la maison de François Vouchy que fut d'Anthoine femme de Mermet Jaunyn devers le vent, la maison de Jehan et Bernard Thaneys frères que fut d'Antoine Breton devers la bize, le court ancian" (=cours ancien, implying that the course of the river had changed, probably since 1508) "de l'eau de l'Armary devers la joux et la charriere publicque devers le lac". (An important point in this text from 1566 is that we do not actually know when Petrus Sigoen or Cigoen became the father-in-law of Petrus Mayor junior — the term might have been added in 1566 to clarify the connections among the parties named. In fact, this relationship is indeed mentioned in Fh 137, so the paraphrase in Fh 153 is confirmed to be accurate.) The citation for the "first" tenants, however, has not been located, and may well have been in lost terriers of either Jean Vulliet (circa 1470?) or Nicod Brasier (circa 1488?) as these commissaires are mentioned (but without explicit dates) several times in Fh 153.

However, another obscure notation, this time a marginal insertion in the terrier Fh 7 (fol. 121), compiled around 1477-1478 by Johannes Vuillieti for noble fiefs subject to the Seigneur of Aubonne, mentions "Aymonodus Mayor filius quondam Stephanodi filii quondam Anthonii Mutignier ? de Yens et Jaquete quondam filie Mermerii dicti Rossectaz de Ballens". This Aymonodus was evidently the tenant of some property at Ballens that fell into the hands of the de Collumberio family, Seigneurs de Vufflens-le-Châtel. It is even possible that this "Mayor" received his name from a family who held the office of mayor at Yens, rather than Ballens, and thus belongs to a completely different family, unrelated to the Mayor family of Ballens. If the distinction between "Aymonodus" and "Aymonetus" is consistently observed in the terriers, it may be possible to clarify the situation; however, variations in given names are frequently found in the early terriers. It is also entirely possible, especially since this strange text was an insertion in Fh 7, that the scribe was distracted and that the name Mutignier is simply incorrect, and should be read as Mayor, in which case the parents of Stephanodus Mayor might be Anthonius Mayor and Jaqueta Rosset or Rossetaz. (This citation remains problematic and possibly just wrong. It may be possible to find some echo of this notation in other terriers. In any case, it is not clear from the context whether the insertion is intended to name the "current" tenants in 1477, or at some unspecified later date.)

Aymonetus (junior) MAYOR       (ID #I16798)

(male)
Father: Stephanodus MAYOR (d. bef 1438)

Family 1 :
  1. +Johanneta MAYOR (d. bef 1488)
  2. +Mondet MAYOR (b. bef 1453, d. aft 1478, BEF 1488)

Cited as the father of Mondet Mayor father of Pierre Mayor in the terrier ACV Fh 137 dating from 1506. He had purchased property from Claude de Froideville at Ballens, subject to the barony of Aubonne. It is possible that the surname Monod, at first an alias in the Mayor family, is derived from his given name, or else from that of his son. The traditional, generic explanation for the surname Monod, which appears to have originated several times in the Pays de Vaud, is that it derives from the given name Aymonet. For example, the Monod family at Féchy can be traced back to an Aymonet Jaquenod, whose descendants are given the alias Monod in some of the terriers, then later called simply Monod.

As of 25 apr 1496, both Aymonet and his son Mondet had died (Fj 5, fol. 72).

In the terrier ACV Fh 137, where (fol. 421, in a reconnaissance for Antoine son of Michel son of the elder Antoine de Vernay alias Mayor, 08 may 1506) an Aymonet Mayor (no alias is mentioned) is referred to as a "predecessor" of the reconnaissant Antoine de Vernay alias Mayor, who was a grandson of Antoine de Vernay alias Mayor. The Aymonet Mayor in question here is the present Aymonetus Mayor junior, the father of Johanneta Mayor, who became the wife of the elder Anthonius de Vernay. Thus, Aymonetus Mayor junior was a great-grandfather of the 1506 reconnaissant, Antoine de Vernay alias Mayor.

It should be noted that Aymonetus Mayor junior, whose daughter Johanneta's children became the modern Mayor family, and whose son Aymonodus/Mondetus gave rise to the modern Monod family, is the latest point where the Monod and Mayor families could have had a common ancestor. The terriers and other documents that have been studied so far do not allow us to establish sufficiently precise dates in these families.

Claude MAYOR       (ID #I13740)

(male)
Father: Jaques MAYOR (b. bef 1482, d. aft 1564?)

Family 1 : Pernon BELLOSAT (dates unknown)
  1.  François MAYOR (b. bef 1531)
  2. +Claude MAYOR (b. bef 1547, d. abt 1618)
  3. +Louis MAYOR (b. bef 1551)

This is the Claude Mayor identified as a notary, but deceased before 31 mar 1569 when the younger notary Claude Mayor, probably the son of the present Claude, recorded an exchange of property between Hugoz Meuraz bourgeois d'Aubonne, for his wife Guilliaumaz, and Jean Folliex bourgeois d'Aubonne (ACV DB 26/1 fol. 93). The property that Meuraz conveyed to Folliex in this transaction was a vineyard at Aubonne, "en Cursillie", adjoining property of the wife of Meuraz, property of Claude Clavel, property of Noble Michel de Lavigny, and "la vigne de Pernon fillie de feuz mre. Pierre Bellosat relicte de feuz egrege Glaude Mayor".

The younger notary Claude Mayor also recorded a complex transaction 04 jan 1613 (ACV DB 26/2 fol. 36) which strongly suggests a close connection between the younger and the elder notaries. The transaction involves a vineyard at Aubonne "en Nonsering" which had been sold by Noble François de Sivirier of Aubonne to Claudaz, daughter of the late Maistre Pierre Bellossat, bourgeois d'Aubonne for 60 florins on 20 jan 1538, recorded by Egrège Guillaume Billiard. Later, 09 dec 1538, de Sivirier had also sold his rights of redemption for that property to Claudaz. After the death of de Sivirier a legal process ensued, during which the claim to the vineyard was disputed. After a review of the documents and payment of taxes due, the vineyard had been awarded to the heirs of Claudaz, namely the late Egrège Claude Mayor and his wife, the daughter of the said Claudaz, 10 may 1554. (This would make sense if Claudaz had been the only one of the daughters of Pierre Bellosat to have left heirs.) Then, 29 apr 1610, the younger notary Claude Mayor, "cause ayant des susdits achepteurs" (meaning, in effect, he was in some sense the legal successor of the elder notary), had ceded the property to Pierre son of François Mayor. That much constitutes the history of the vineyard. Then, 04 jan 1613, the said Pierre Mayor sold all of his rights to the vineyard, which was security for a loan to Odet Moné, minister at Perroys, for a total of 600 florins, to Jaques Vochy, bourgeois d'Aubonne. The younger notary Claude Mayor could record this document because he had already sold his interest in the property. He would not have recorded transactions in which he was a party, and so his records tell us nothing further about his relationship to the elder Claude.

From a variety of sources, it is clear that Louis Mayor of Ballens was the son of the elder notary Claude Mayor. Further, there are mentions in the terriers suggesting that the (younger) notary Claude Mayor was a brother of Louis Mayor, a conclusion that seems inescapable. Among other interesting documents, a "reconnaissance" dated 23 dec 1622 in the terrier for Ballens (ACV Fh 175 fol. 11v), regarding property owned by Isaac son of the late Jaques Convers who was son of Jean Convers, cites a previous reconnaissance dated 01 mar 1570 from the previous terrier, compiled by George Dunant and Pierre Tripod, for property acknowledged by Discret Claude, Louis, and François, sons of the late Egrège Claude Mayor. "Discret Claude Mayor" must be the younger notary, and the late Egrège Claude Mayor must be the older notary, the one who had married Pernon Bellosat. While we can follow the descendance of Louis, we are not sure which François was the son of the elder Claude. Louis, son of the late Egrège Claude Mayor, made a "reconnaissance" on 16 jun 1623 (fol. 90 of the same terrier ACV Fh 175), in the course of which he is said to be the son of Egrège Claude the son of Jaques, who was apparently the son of Pierre Mayor (with reference to terriers of 1570 and one prior to that, possibly about 1516). The wording of the several references to François Mayor whose guardian in 1570 was Claude Mayor de Mollens seems to imply that this was not the François who was the brother of Louis and Claude.

With this background, it is possible to see in the terrier ACV Fh 31 (undated, believed to be from about 1580-1585) a possible genealogy of these people: At that time, Discret Claude Mayor and his brothers Louis and François held a 1/4 interest in various properties. Another 1/4 was held by Jaques Mayor son of Pierre, and his nephews Sulpice and Pierre, sons of François Mayor. (From this we propose that Egrège Claude, the elder notary, was the brother of the Pierre who had sons Jaques and the late François.) The remaining 1/2 of these properties was held by François son of the late Claude Mayor. This proportion would result if the latter François was the sole heir of his father Claude, who would in turn have been the only brother of Jaques, father of the elder notary. The property from Pierre, father of these two brothers Jaques and Claude must have descended to them undivided, and then to their respective sons, and then, still undivided, to the next generation.

In order to have three sons who were apparently of the age of majority by 1570, Claude must have been born about 1520 or earlier. He was dead by 29 apr 1566 (Fh 153 fol. 411fv) when his children and their cousins the children of Claude's late brother Pierre are listed as joint owners of a part of a vineyard in the territory of Aubonne "en Chevrajon" (modern spelling Chivrageon). This history of this parcel is discussed more fully in the notes for Claude's paternal ancestors.

This is also apparently the Claude Mayor who is the subject of a short but extremely interesting document:

[ACV C XX 18/12]

Icelluy Abel Mayor notaire.

This document establishes the approximate date of death of Claude Mayor the elder (although from the wording, it is at least possible he had been dead, and the village of Ballens without a "mayor", for some time), and that he held the position of "Mayor" of Ballens, and that his son François was his eldest. Further, it tells us that the family then known as Mayor had obtained the office of the "mayorie", representing the convent of Romainmôtier for administrative functions in the village of Ballens. The question naturally arises, whether this office had previously been held by the family that had come to be known as Monod, and had formerly been known as Mayor, in the same village. However, there is still not enough evidence to answer this question, since the family that became known as Monod could equally well descend from a family that held the "mayorie" in some other village at an even earlier date. The evidence that they are indeed descendants of Antoine de Vernay alias Mayor is very tenuous at this time. However, we can certainly place the institution of the de Vernay family as "mayors" of Ballens in the time of Antoine, who died well before 1506, leaving at least two sons and several grandsons. Bern had taken over the convent, its properties, and its rents as a consequence of the conquest of the Pays de Vaud in 1536, but they had left in place the office of the "mayor" and some of the other administrative structures of the old convent, in order to assure the collections of the rents and other feudal incomes. In this instance, Bern simply supplanted the convent as the feudal authority, collecting the same rents, tithes, and taxes for its own benefit.

If we can generalize from the example of the appointment of François Mayor to the mayorie of Ballens in 1556, it follows that his father, the present Claude Mayor, must have been the eldest of his generation also. This mode of descent is logical for a privilege that is bestowed on one person at a time. For other purposes, such as feudal obligations tied to land that was held jointly, the family was generally represented by the eldest surviving member of the family, or by a combination of heads of families who had apparently agreed among themselves as to the division of the obligations that must be paid.

Claude MAYOR       (ID #I1522)

(male)
Father: Claude MAYOR (b. bef 1510, d. 1556)
Mother: Pernon BELLOSAT (dates unknown)

Family 1 :
  1.  David MAYOR (b. bef 1600, d. aft 1623)

There were two notaries by the name of Claude Mayor, one who married Pernon Bollosat before 1554, and died before 1569, and another who was likely his son, practicing as a notary 1567-1618. It has taken some time to understand this much!

For the younger notary, there are many references. A document he recorded 04 jan 1613 (ACV DB 26/2 fol. 36) describes how the elder Claude Mayor acquired a vineyard through his wife, daughter of Claudaz Darcier and Pierre Bollosat of Aubonne, sold by the younger Claude Mayor "charge ayant" to Pierre son of François Mayor in 1610. Relationships to other members of the Mayor family have not been proved, but a document of 27 mar 1593 records sale of interest in property owned jointly between Louis and Claude the notary. When he appeared as a sponsor at a baptism in Ballens in 1578, he was noted as then living in Aubonne.

His notarial registers seem nearly complete (ACV DB 26/1-9, FHL microfilms #0858477 and #0858478). The registers are classified by the ACV as pertaining to the district of Aubonne, but during Claude Mayor's lifetime he was actually working for the Bailliage of Morges, as made clear by the inscription on his first register:

"Premyer prothocolle de moy Claude Mayor bourgeois d'Aulbonne qui ay esté passé notayre par honnorable et puissant Seigneur Hans Rudolffe Manuel bourgeois de Berne à present ballif de Morges le 12e 9bre 1567..."

(For details of the Manuel family, see our database on the Dutoit family.) And, in the very first act that he recorded, he identifies himself on 15 nov 1567 as "moy notayre publicque juré du ballifvage de Morges, soubsigné".

It is interesting that he identifies himself as a citizen of Aubonne. We have found several members of the Mayor family of Ballens who became citizens of Aubonne and held significant positions there. The same is true for many other families, generally identified as "bourgeois d'Aubonne", but upon further study having their origins in the surrounding villages. Do the communal archives of Aubonne hold any records of citizenship as far back as the 16th Century?

He was probably about age 20 when he became a notary, although there are instances where notaries in the Pays de Vaud are known to have begun their careers at an earlier age. There does not seem to have been an official minimum age for notaries until 1762, when Their Excellencies of Bern set it at 25.

The papers left by Claude Mayor appear to consist of three registers (DB 26/1, 1567-1570; DB 26/3, 1570-1598; DB 26/2, 1599-1617). In addition, there are six minutaires covering 1571-1618, but lacking 1577 and with minor damage elsewhere (DB 26/4-9). The minutaires include transactions not found in the registers, and to some extent the reverse is also true. He wrote with a rapid hand, using many abbreviations typical of the period, and for the most part, it is possible to make out most of the names and other details. The handwriting of the period, however, often fails to distinguish the letters n, u, and v, and the dot over the i is sometimes misplaced or absent. As a result, many names are ambiguous and must be resolved based on a preponderance of evidence and knowledge of local families gleaned from other documents. The church records and the terriers (especially those from later periods, where the handwriting is usually less ambiguous) are especially important in this regard. The register identified as DB 26/3 appears to be synthetic; that is, it seems to consist of diverse pages or groups of pages arranged in rough chronological order, but some of the documents so assembled are clearly incomplete, broken off at the end of a folio. Other folios are blank on the back. It appears that these documents must have been assembled later (after the death of the notary?) and then provided with an index. Several of the folios in this register show that in 1597, Claude Mayor was serving as the clerk of a court headed by Jean Barbier, probably at Aubonne, receiving testimony about the verbal testaments of people who had very recently died of the plague.

Claude (dit Mathey) MAYOR       (ID #I100)

(male)
Father: Jaques MAYOR (b. bef 1482, d. aft 1564?)

Family 1 : Mermette MATHEY (dates unknown)
  1. +Jaques (dit Mathey) MAYOR (b. bef 1544, d. bef 1599)
  2. +Claudaz MAYOR (b. bef 1548)
  3.  Pernette MAYOR (b. bef 1550)

  5.  Sulpisaz MAYOR (b. bef 1557)
  6.  Collette MAYOR (dates unknown)
  7. +Genette MAYOR (dates unknown)

Placed as a second son named Claude of Jaques Mayor, though with considerable hesitation.

He is not the notary of Ballens 1567-1618. There is an older "late Claude Mayor" of Ballens whose children are found in the same notarial records. We do not think he was this older Claude Mayor either, already deceased by 1569, who was a notary and who had married Pernon daughter of the late Pierre Bollosat or Bellosat of Aubonne. The latter Claude Mayor, the deceased notary, is mentioned in an exchange of property between Hugoz Meuraz bourgeois d'Aubonne, for his wife Guilliamaz, and Jean Folliex bourgeois d'Aubonne. The property from Folliex is described as a vineyard at Aubonne "en Cursillie", adjacent to property of the wife of Meuraz, property of Glaude Clavel, "la vigne de Pernon fillie de feuz Mre. Pierre Bellossat relicte de feux egrege Glaude Mayor", and property of Noble Michel de Lavigny. But from the records of the younger notary Claude Mayor (ACV DB 26), there are many citations of "Hennarde", widow of another Claude Mayor (dit Graton?) but only beginning in December, 1582.

In spite of the problem of the "dit names", it is very clear that a Claude Mayor dit Mathey was the father of the Pernette Mayor, who married Gabriel Vieux in 1568. The contract for that marriage, dated 19 jan 1568 (ACV DB 26/1 fol. 27v), also mentions Pernette's brother Jaques Mayor dit Mathey and the existence of other, unnamed brothers.

We had assumed that the Claude Mayor who left a son young François was a son of Michel, but that could be the result of confusion. The terriers (among them FH 31 and FH 175, especially fol. 90v) suggest instead that that Claude must have been the brother or nephew of Jaques, father of Pierre and of the elder notary Egrège Claude Mayor, in order to have led to proportion of ownership in jointly held properties at Ballens. (We still favor the solution that Michel was in fact the grandfather of the young François. Part of the confusion seems to be resolved if Claude the elder notary and Claude of Mollens are brothers, as suggested by other evidence discussed below.)

The problem, then, is to separate the dit Mathey branch of Mollens from the one at Ballens that left the son François.

Claude Mayor dit Mathey was still alive 19 jan 1568 when he was present at the signing of the marriage contract for his daughter Pernette and Gabriel Vieux (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/1 fol. 27v; Pernette's brother Jaques Mayor dit Mathey was also present). The marriage settlement of 60 florins was delivered 23 jan 1569 by Jaques Mayor dit Mathey (fol. 84v), but it is not stated whether Pernette's father was already dead by this date. On 27 dec 1570, a transaction involving the Mathey family dict Ballens was witnessed by "Claude et Jaques Mayor dict Mathey pere & fils", but this passage had first been rendered differently and lined out before the present reading was substituted (DB 26/3 fol. 11). The elder Claude is definitely dead by 23 may 1583 (DB 26/3 fol. 107v), by which time his daughter Pernette had remarried to Jean Cordey, who has received his marriage settlement from Pernette's brothers Jaques and Claude Mayor, sons of the late Claude Mayor.

The terrier ACV Fg 125, compiled by Claude's grandson the notary Etienne Mayor, cites a previous reconnaissance by Claude and his father-in-law Jaques Mathey on 01 dec 1529 (from a terrier compiled by François Gros of Bière, now identified as ACV Fg 52, see below). It is further explained that at least part of this property was at that time held jointly, half to these two, and the other half to Antoine, Jean, and Ottonin Mayor, sons of the late Michel Mayor alias du Vernay. At an earlier date, the property had been recognized by the said Michel Mayor (alias du Vernay) and his brother Pierre. This chain of ownership strongly implies that Claude, apparently already over the age of 25 as of 1529, was a son or grandson of Pierre, brother of Michel. If the earlier terriers have survived, we may be able to confirm this ancestry, which would have the effect of tying the main branches of the Mayor families of Ballens and Mollens together. At the moment, we cannot attach the present Claude to the rest of the Mayor family, but he appears to be either a son or grandson of the earliest idenfied ancestor of the family at Ballens, Antoine Mayor alias du Vernay.

Another terrier, Fg 283, contains many brief but interesting clues about the families of Mollens. It was compiled for the noble de Mont family. It is not dated, but is believed to come from approximately 1553-1556. On fol. 25, it enumerates the properties of "Claude Mayor de Ballens resident à Mollens". We have only examined the first 36 folios of this document, labeled on the front in a later hand, "Rentier inutile".

While considering the problem of the origins of Claude Mayor dit Mathey, it may be useful to keep in mind the possibility that there were two sons named Claude in the same family. In the 16th Century, there are many examples of this situation, which happens just often enough in the records of the Pays de Vaud to cause serious confusion.

Another line of investigation concerns the identity of "Claude son of the late Jaques Mayor of Mollens", guardian of François son of Claude Mayor of Ballens in 1570. The terrier Fh 175 quotes in several places a reconnaissance of Claude son of the late Jaques Mayor acting as guardian of François Mayor 09 jun 1570, and the related terrier Fh 31 (a summary, containing no dates, but apparently dating from about 1580) enumerates the same properties recognized in 1570 as properties belonging to François son of the late Claude Mayor. Who was this guardian? Jaques Mayor dit Mathey de Mollens, son of the present Claude, did not, so far as we know, have a son Claude. Unless such a son has escaped detection, the Claude Mayor of Mollens who was the guardian in 1570 would have to be the present Claude, thus identified as the son of a Jaques Mayor of Ballens.

Finally, and in light of the evidence cited above, the terrier Fg 52 comes very close to a categorical statement about the parentage of Claude Mayor dit Mathey. On fol. 66v, dated 01 dec 1529, we find the "Confessio Jacobi filii quondam Petri Mathey alias dez Ballens dez Mollens, et Glaudii Mayor dez Ballens eius generi suo et conjuncto nomine Mermete eius uxoris filie dicti Jacobi Mathey facta." The first group of properties are held jointly by Jacobus Mathey and his son-in-law Claudius Mayor. These are followed on fol. 71v (still part of the same reconnaissance) by properties held by Claudius Mayor in his own name. The source of his title to these properties is described as follows: "... ex succession sua paterna et divisionibus suis inde inter ipsum Glaudium confitentem ac Petrum Mayor eius fratrem et Anthonium Mayor dez Ballens factis res et possessions sequentem sitas et jacentes in villa et confinio dez Mollens cum fundis juribus et pertinenis suis universis ultimo recognitas in manibus supradicti Aymoneti Pollens commissarii per Michaelem et Petrum dictorum Mayor filiorum quondam Anthonii dou Verney dez Ballens que pridem furent dicti Anthonii dou Verney eorundem Michaelis et Petri quondam patris et antiquitus Doucete filie Jaqueti Soudant et certorum aliorum infrascriptorum." However, the same terrier mentions several times that the same Pierre also was a brother of Claude the notary, and fails in every case to mention that these are two separate persons named Claude Mayor.

He had a posthumous son with no dit name, 1584 (David). Not sure if this is the same Claude Mayor whose dau. Claude or Claudine m. (1) Francois Boley, then in 1569 (2) Christophle DeGeneve. However, this is certainly the Claude whose wife was Marguerite. If this is correct, then this Claude is the one described in 1585 as the late son of the late Claude Mayor, and Marguerite as the daughter of the late Pierre Mayor. This Claude also had a brother Jaques, who was the guardian of Claude's heirs, and who delivered the marriage settlement for Marguerite's second marriage 25 may 1586 (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/6 fol. 6, and a similar document 05 dec 1586 on fol. 22).

Parentage noted in birth record. Marriage at age 17 is not uncommon in that era, but questions remain. Marriage contract notes that her father Jaques was already dead, and that she had a brother Estienne. The birth of Estienne Mayor is not recorded. The marriages of Claudine and of her brother Estienne were recorded by Claude Mayor, notary at Ballens (ACV DB 26/9 fol. 2 dated 04 nov 1599 and fol. 2v dated 06 nov 1599, respectively).
