He is cited as an adult as early as 1567, after the death of his father (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/1 fol. 3, 05 dec 1567). His third (?) marriage in 1583 specifies "l'ancien". However, this title was movable. The older Claude Barbie "l'ancien", son of Jean, had died before 02 jun 1569. The present Claude Barbie appears to be the one named as the brother of Abraham Convers' wife "Henarde" (Léonarde) Barbie.

There are many difficulties concerning the identity of the various citations for Gabrielle Barbie. There are several references to her as the wife and widow of Claude Monod, in the church records and elsewhere. It is presumably this Gabrielle who is named in the testament of Jean Barbyer le jeusne, bourgeois of Aubonne, sick with the plague, 28 aug 1597, as his sister (Claude Mayor, notary, ACV DB 26/8 fol. 60). She was apparently still a widow 15 mar 1599, when she appears on behalf of her unnamed children as one of the owners of property sold to Gabriel son of Anthoine Monod. The property, at Ballens "en la Vy d'Aubonne", had been held jointly by Gabrielle's children along with Thivent Monod, Lyonnard Barbey (who had married Pernon Monod), and Gabriel son of Jaques Monod. If we can identify this property in the terriers, we may be able to make better sense of the relationships between the Barbie and Monod families.
At least it is now certain that the Gabrielle Barbie who was the wife of Bartholomé Pirod was not the same Gabrielle Barbie who married Elie Monod: In the terrier ACV Fh 175, both couples appear, and the two Gabrielles owned different properties (reconnaissance of Bartholomé Pirod and his wife Gabrielle Barbey, fol. 118 ff, dated 16 dec 1622; reconnaissance of Gabrielle fille de feuz Leonard Barbey femme d'honneste Elie fils de Gabriel Monnod de Balens faicte par ledict Monnod son mari, fol. 61v ff, dated 18 nov 1622).

Which Gabrielle Barbie is this? Not the widow of Claude Monod, who would be too old, and not the widow of Barthelemie Piron, who would also seem too old. She appears as the grandmother of Elizabeth Monod in 1671, at the baptism of Gabriel de Cologny, son of Estienne de Cologny and Elizabeth Monod, and elsewhere.
Her testament dated 14 dec 1677 was recorded by Gaspard Mayor, notary of Aubonne (ACV DB 27). It mentions, among others, her current husband Lancelot Champion, her late daughter Jaqueline Monod who had married Isaac Convers, and their children Susanne, Jeanne, and Elizabeth Convers.
In spite of her apparent age, the terrier ACV Fg 159 (fol. 68v ff, undated but evidently from 1678-1680) says that she was the widow of Elie Monod and also the same Gabrielle Barbay who was the wife of Bartholomé Piroud when he made a reconnaissance for the previous terrier (Fh 175) on 07dec 1622. In the context of the terrier Fh 159, this makes some sense (apart from the chronology) in that several parcels then in her hands are traced to the reconnaissance of Bartholomé Piroud of 1622. Was the reconnaissance of Gabrielle in Fg 159 left undated because she died before it could be finalized? But if that was the case, it may be that the notary who compiled Fg 159 was the one who reached the conclusion that she was the same Gabrielle mentioned in the reconnaissance of Bartholomé.
She could not have been the mother of the children of Bartholomé Pirod. As that Gabrielle Barbay is named in the baptisms of two of his children born in 1601 and 1603, she could not be the same Gabrielle who gave birth to the last child of Elie Monod in 1644, nor of the previous one in 1638. (The list of the children of Elie Monod is likely incomplete. We have not located baptisms for two of the children, and there are long gaps between the known children. However, the first one known was baptised in 1624, at a time when Bartholomé Pirod was still alive. Bartholomé appears as a witness at a baptism, for example, as late as 1626. Further, both couples appear in the terrier Fh 175, at the end of 1622.)
Complicating matters even further, a Gabrielle Barbie appears as a sponsor at a baptism at Ballens in 1614-1617, without further identification. If she passed confirmation at an early age, or if she was unusually old at the birth of her last child, she could be the present Gabrielle. The most likely explanation seems to be that Gabrielle was born in the interval 1586-1597, during a gap in the church records of the parish of Bière. However, François DuMur, author of a dossier of genealogical notes regarding the Monod family at the ACV (1971), believed he had found the baptism of Gabrielle daughter of Leonard Barbie in the church records of the parish of Bière, with the date 04 mar 1604. At that date, he would have had access to the original church books, rather than the microfilm. On the microfilm, we are unable to confirm anything about this faded entry other than the name Gabrielle (top of p. 102). If he was correct in this conclusion, it is extremely unlikely that this Gabrielle Barbie was the one who appeared as a sponsor for baptisms 1614-1617.
