Niklaus Manuel,
self portrait.
Styled "Niklaus Manuel Deutsch", he probably studied abroad. It has been suggested on stylistic grounds that he must have studied with Holbein at Basel, at Colmar with Martin Schoen, and certainly in Venice with Titian, where he was known as "Emmanuel Tedeschi" (although another interpretation of the evidence suggests this designation only appeared long after his death). His Totentanz, painted in fresco on the walls of the cemetery of the Dominican convent at Bern in 1515-1517 (these dates somewhat uncertain, other sources suggest 1516-1519), was lost by 1660, but not before at least two fine copies were made, which survive today, the best known by Albrecht Kauw (1649, gouache and gold).
One hypothesis for his early training suggests that he must have apprenticed in a glass-painting studio. This idea is interesting from the point of view of subsequent history: one man in Bern who is known to have been a close friend of Manuel was Anthoni Noll, whose father Hans Noll was the famous glass painter who died during the year prior to Easter, 1493. It was upon the façade of Anthoni Noll's house across from the cathedral on the Münsterplatz that Manuel painted his fresco of the Idolatry of Solomon in 1518. If his year of birth is approximately correct, Manuel would have been too young to have learned very much from Hans Noll, but it remains entirely possible that both Niklaus Manuel and Anthoni Noll might have apprenticed together. Anthoni is later identified as a "smith" (Schmied, but this designation might simply mean that he was a member of the charitable guild of the smiths, which need not imply that he actually worked as a blacksmith), but nothing is known of his training.

After some years of research, we are finally confident in stating that this is the Henri Marcel who assisted Louis Reymond, leader of the "Bourla-Papey" brigades of 1802. More research is needed, but Reymond's lieutenant is cited in the Lexikon and in the electronic edition of the Dictionnaire Historique de la Suisse as Henri Marcel, born 1772. Other accounts call him Henri Marcel "of Lausanne". There is simply no other Henri Marcel, and no other Marcel family in Lausanne at that era. There is a citation to this effect (including his full baptismal name), also, in an article by René Secrétan, "A propos des Bourla-Papey", Revue Historique Vaudoise 58:17-32 (1950) (the footnote on page 20 cites Johannes Strickler, vol. VIII, page 1331, a reference to his Actensammlung aus de Zeit der Helvetische Republik, in 10 volumes, published 1886-1905). However, this turns out to be simply Strickler's earliest reference to "le nommé Marcel" in connection with the Bourla-Papey, with no further information about his background. Apparently, it was Secrétan himself, and not Strickler, who reached this conclusion about the identify of the Lieutenant of Reymond.
As a consequence of recognizing Henri Marcel's participation in the Bourla-Papey, we must view the departure of Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel from the Pays de Vaud in 1802 in a new perspective. The financial difficulties of the latter may have been viewed by the Marcel family as a result of the oppressive feudal regime, thus giving Henri's actions a personal motivation, while his crimes may have been viewed as a stain on the family name, thus giving his cousin a reason to leave the Pays de Vaud.
An account of the family from the Archives of Lausanne (1950's) indicated Henri had three children out of wedlock. Recent investigations at the Archives of Lausanne reveals two illegitimate sons who survived him, and indicates that Henri left Switzerland for "America" in 1802, leaving his children without support (and thus to be supported at public expense). Another statement (ACV PP 416 CL 10) says that he left for America "après avoir fait des mauvaises affaires", as close to an admission of his notorious past as we have been able to locate.
The mention of Henri Marcel leaving Switzerland intersects nicely with the rest of the history of the Bourla-Papey. Henri Marcel, Louis Reymond, and several others who participated in these exploits were sentenced to death in absentia by the Petit Conseil of the République Helvétique about 30 jun 1802, the conspirators by then having retreated to Thonon in Savoie, out of reach of the Swiss authorities. By 19 aug 1802, the councillor Polier having been relaced by the more sympathetic Henri Monod, a decree of amnesty was issued, commuting the death sentences to banishment. Finally, the Sénat of the République Helvétique passed a decree of complete amnesty 15 oct 1802, hoping for the political support of the more democratic segment of the population. The news that Henri may have come to America is thus extremely interesting and points out the need for additional research in records on both sides of the Atlantic. If he were actually in America in 1805, we first guessed he would be found somewhere in the vicinity where our Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel settled, perhaps near Georgetown, DC.
The authority for the statement that he died before 1820 is the marriage record of his son in Switzerland. In all probability, there should be some other notice of his passing in the Swiss records. A possible clue is a mention in the Marcel dossier at the Archives de la Ville de Lausanne of a bankruptcy ("faillite") of Henry Marcel, 19 jul 1805, perhaps in connection with a house at Place St. François 16 which had been owned by his father, and after the death of his mother in 1801, in the hands of Henri and his siblings.
Given the politics of the time, it seems likely that Henri would have left the region (he seems to have been in the area around Thonon at the time he was banished) by way of Geneva, which was then part of the French "Département de Léman". The Archives d'Etat de Genève have a large collection of passport documents, both passports issued and records of passports presented by travelers in the early 19th Century. The town of Divonne-les-Bains, where his cousin had moved about the same time to work in the paper mills there, was also in the Département of Léman. Did Henri stay with his cousin while deciding what to do next?
The Marcel family papers (ACV PP 416) includes a group of letters sent by Henri Marcel to his cousin Albert Marcel in Paris in December, 1802 and January, 1803. The identity of the author is verified from his handwriting (comparison with the authentic letter of 1799 from Henri Marcel to Jeanne Sophie Aigroz now at the Archives de la Ville de Lausanne) and from the distinctive flourish following his signature. Henri was at Cherbourg, having arrived about December 8, and was preparing for a voyage to the New World, evidently as part of an attempt to establish a colony either in Surinam or in what is now French Guyana (ACV PP 416 Ba 3). More information about Albert Marcel's business interests in that region is in PP 416 Ac 22, not yet examined. Thus, it appears that Henri, finding himself at loose ends, took advantage of his family's business connections in order to start a new life.
There do not seem to be any letters from Henri in the Marcel papers after his letter of 20 jan 1803, written just two hours before the ship was supposed to sail. By July 1805, he was the subject of a "faillite" (bankruptcy) before the "Tribunal de première instance du district de Lausanne", according to a notice that appeared in the Gazette de Lausanne. The records of the Tribunal have not yet been examined; presumably, Henri was still alive, and he had authorized to act on his behalf to settle his debts.
[991] Dead by the time his son Henri Siméon Marcel was married in 1820.
