His story is told in considerable detail in Ruby Golay Stoner's David Golay, His Ancestors and Descendants (Des Moines, Iowa, 1984), which includes good translations drawn from two important sources: First, a collection of family correspondence and other documents then in the possession of Humbert Golay of Le Brassus (Vaud), and, second, correspondence between David Golay and his associates with the Du Pont de Nemours family, now in the Du Pont papers at the Hagley Museum and Library, Wilmington, DE.
David Golay came to the United States in 1801 with his family on the ship Benjamin Franklin from Bordeaux. He had contracted with Etienne Delessert to operate a dairy farm at Rosendale, Ulster Co., NY for 6 years. The property had previously belonged to a partnership involving Jean Jaques Cart, and later sold to Delessert. The farm turned out to be in very bad condition, and Golay turned for help to the Du Pont family, whom he had met in Paris while arranging his passage to America. Golay was eventually released from his contract and took his family to the settlement of "New Switzerland", Indiana during the summer of 1804, to join the Dufour family, with whom he had very nearly decided to travel in 1801.
While Stoner's translations are very good, lack of familiarity with French and Swiss terminology has led some American genealogists astray. Among other errors, the village of St. Saphorin-sur-Morges is placed by some genealogists in Indiana, and by others in Ontario, Canada! It is, of course, in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland.
One of his letters (in Stoner's translation), written to his father in Switzerland on 30 aug 1804, reports that he had arrived on 12 aug 1804 at New Switzerland, Indiana. "There is a Mr. Gex of Eclepens who has been in partnership with Mr. Collomb the elder of Vevey who is our neighbor here. He is waiting for his wife and children next spring with a colony of [better reading: from] the canton of Berne, for whom he bought some land." This was Louis Gex, who would later marry, as his second wife, the eldest daughter of David Golay.
Mrs. Stoner recounts the story of the lost grave of Jaques David Golay (p. 71): "David Golay died late Dec 1815 in Switz. Co., Ind. David's family lived in a log cabin which no longer exists and he and his wife were buried on their homestead. Many years later, a black man, thinking he was doing a good deed, removed the bodies to the farm of David's grandson, Constant Golay, and laid them to rest there. Later, mortition's records reveal that they were disinterred, and buried [in the] Thiebaud Addition, Vevay Cemetery, Switz., Co., Ind, 14 sep 1870. However, there are no markers for them in Vevay Cem., and no one has heard of the Thiebaud Addition, although it surely must exist."
