  5. +Lucy Jane MCCOY (b. 24 JUN 1828, d. 19 FEB 1893)

His given name was for many years uncertain. He is called Reuben in one of Don Whiteside's publications that included the connection to Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel, but another of Don Whiteside's publications says that the Casteen family thought his name was David. Present-day descendants of the Casteen family of Brown Co., IL seem to be unaware of the reported connection of our McCoy line to the Casteen family. Records might be sought in Gallatin Co., KY (birthplace claimed for Georgette McCoy); Hamilton Co., OH (where most of Isaac Whitesides' family lived); Warren Co., OH (where Georgette McCoy was married); Butler Co., OH (where Louisa "Marcelles" remarried); and Montgomery Co., OH (where the younger David McCoy was living after the death of Oscar, and where Oscar was married). It would be helpful to locate any additional record of this family between 1830 and 1844.

A document that resolves some of the questions has turned up in papers from the Marcel family of Haguenau, Bas-Rhin, France. It is a power-of-attorney dated in 1824, and then authenticated in the county court of Jessamine County in 1825. At some point it became necessary for the Marcel family in Kentucky to provide a power-of-attorney so that estates in Switzerland could be liquidated and the funds given to the Marcel children. For this purpose, Jean Marcel had designated his cousin Louis Marcel, and Louis Meyer (an attorney at Lausanne, possibly also a relative). Exactly how this document came into the possession of the branch of the family in Haguenau is not certain. It bears the signatures of Jane M. Caldwell, David McCoy (the surname would be indecipherable in any other context), Louisa McCoy Marcel (this is the correct order of the surnames, if she were writing her name in Switzerland), John Marcel, and Charles M. L. Marcel. It also names the other daughter, Marie, noting that she is a minor. The document mentions a bequest from Julie Johannot to the children of Jean Marcel, as well as a bequest from a "Madame Kuhn" (not further identified, except that she was from Lausanne; it is also possible the name should be Kühn or Kühne). This part of the transaction remains to be explained. The document also says that David McCoy and his wife lived in Henry County, KY.

(We can speculate that the papers of Louis Marcel could have been passed to his nephew Henri Siméon Marcel, whose widow was living in Paris at the same time that Louise Beck returned to Haguenau after the death of her husband Henry Charles Marcel in New York in 1882. Henry Charles was the son of Henri Siméon. It is possible that Henri Siméon's widow might have given her husband's papers to Louise Beck. There is at least one reference to Louis Marcel having a packet of papers relating to Jean Marcel in the Marcel family papers at the ACV.)

A possible "David McCoy Jr." is found on the tax list of Fayette Co., KY of 1818, recorded immediately after John Marcel. Tax lists of Warren Co., OH for 1827-1833 show a David McCay/McKay. One deed mentioning property formerly owned by David McCoy and John Sterret is dated 19 jul 1826 (Warren Co. Deeds, vol. 13, p. 91 — the property was 55 acres on the Little Miami River in Hamilton Township, sold by William Lytle and Margaret his wife, formerly property of John Sterrett and David McCoy, assignees for Abraham McClelland, part of John McElhaney's survey number 1497 in the Virginia Military District — and that could mean John Sterret and David McCoy had purchased Abraham McClelland's rights to a Virginia military land warrant).

Initially, we assumed that David must have been dead by the time his daughter Georgette was married, 23 sep 1832, because the consent was signed by Louisa McCoy and her father. But it was also conceivable that David was not dead, but merely unavailable. For example, he could have been ill. The Ohio tax lists show that a David McCoy was taxed for 200 acres in entry 1497, in Hamilton Tp., until 1833. In 1834, the same land was taxed to Joseph Kibby. However, there is still no evidence that would allow us to identify the David McCoy of Warren Co. with the David McCoy who married Louisa Marcel.

The tax lists of Henry Co., KY first mention David McCoy in 1819 (1 male over age 21). He is there also in 1820 and 1821 (1 horse). The list for 1822 is mostly illegible due to water damage; we could not locate an entry for David McCoy. In 1823, he is taxed for the first time for land: 5 acres on the waters of Barebone Creek. He does not appear on later lists for Henry County, because he was in the part of Henry County from which Oldham County was formed in 1824. The Oldham County tax lists for 1824 are again damaged by water, and the list for 1825, while apparently intact, was filmed so badly out of focus that we were unable to spot David McCoy. In 1826 (still Oldham County), he was taxed for the same 5 acres on Barebone Creek (originally entered by John West). He was also taxed for 1 horse. In 1827, he was taxed not only for the 5 acres, but also for three town lots (entered by May and Banister?), one black male under the age of 16, and one horse. In 1828 and 1829, he is taxed for the 5 acres (entered by John West), but there are now 4 town lots, and the black male is gone. The lists for 1830 include a David McKey (no property, 1 male over 21, 3 horses), but this may not be our David. We were not able to locate his 5 acres under any other name. That might mean that the person to whom it was taxed in 1830 was living in a different county: the entries on the tax lists were supposed to be made in the county of residence, rather than the county in which the property was located.

Even though David McCoy was taxed for the 5 acres on Barebone Creek beginning in 1823, as well as at least 4 town lots, we found no deeds for him in Henry County. The deed for the purchase of the 5 acres was found in Oldham County, Deed Book A, p. 450, dated 30 oct 1827. He had purchased the property from Willis G. Conduitt of Morgan County, Indiana for $500. The deed was recorded in Oldham County 10 may 1828. We suppose that he had contracted to purchase the property in 1822-1823, at which time he became liable for the property taxes, but had not paid the entire sum of $500 to Conduitt until October, 1827, perhaps with funds from the Swiss bequests mentioned above. The property was evidently not far from the town of Bedford (now in Trimble County) on the west side of the road toward Madison, Indiana. It was roughly triangular in shape.

We did not find any deeds for the town lots in the records of Oldham County, so we suppose that he had not completed his payments on them.

The Oldham County Will Book 1 contains reports of administrations as well. The inventory and sale of David McCoy's personal estate is reported on pages 149-150 (03 oct and 12 oct 1829), with the final settlement reported on page 177 (19 oct 1830). He did not leave a will, and the only genealogical clue in the proceedings is a mention of a debt of $30 owed to him by James McCoy — a note declared "not good". James McCoy must have been a relative, but he had either died or could not be found by the administrators. The inventory shows that David McCoy (in one place called a "Mechanic") was a cabinetmaker with a large stock of cherry and poplar lumber, carpentry tools, and supplies such as varnish, turpentine, hinges, etc. However, the value of the estate was very modest. The proceedings in the will book do not indicate what became of the real estate. It is possible that the Oldham County Courthouse still has the case file for this estate.

The only clue to his origins so far discovered is the tax list of 1818 in Fayette Co., where David McCoy Jr. appears next to John Marcel. The first appearance of a David McCoy (presumably the one later to be designated as David McCoy Sr.) is in the 1801 tax list for Fayette Co. There are three lists at that period: one is usually labeled as pertaining to residents within the bounds of the 8th Regiment, another includes a section for the "town of Lexington", and the third, where David McCoy is found, apparently has no specific label at all. In any case, this David McCoy has no land, and his household has only one white male over the age of 21.

[1024] Birthplace noted in 1880 census for daughter Georgette McCoy Whiteside. Where: no definite census records yet, unless perhaps David McCoy in Henry Co. 1820 (uncertain reading). But where are they in 1830? Perhaps Warren Co., OH? He was over age 21 on the 1819 tax list of Henry Co., KY.

[1025] Will Book 1, Oldham Co., KY, includes the inventory and sale of his personal estate in October, 1829, and the final settlement of the administrators in November, 1830.

[1486] Though no record has been found, it seems most likely that they were married in Fayette Co., KY.

Father: Oscar MCCOY (b. ABT 1820, d. 1844)
Mother: Luticia STUART (b. 17 MAR 1823, d. AFT 1844)

Family 1 : Harriet (Hattie) WILSON (b. 1850, d. 1928)

Middle initial from marriage record. Family story says David was orphaned when both his parents died of tuberculosis in Butler Co., OH. Later, Roger O'Hara went to Ohio to fetch him (about 1855, when he would be old enough to choose his own guardian?). Death record indicates he was 37 years old, laborer, born Ohio, had suffered from consumption for 2 years, physician was B. Wilson, Mt. Sterling.

[1059] Birthplace according to data for children in 1880 census. Living with Thomas O'Hara family in 1860 (also shows BP as Ohio). With Joseph McClammon family in 1850 census Montgomery Co., OH (Dayton) p. 264B.

[1060] 1880 shows Hattie as head of the household with her 3 children.

[1061] Inscription gives only years of birth and death. It might be possible to locate an obituary, and Brown Co. newpapers of that period have survived.

  1.  John Wesley MCCOY (b. 13 JUN 1834, d. 17 JUN 1911)

Family indicates he claimed to have been on guard duty in the War of 1812 during the bombardment of Ft. McHenry. A service record for a John McCoy in MD does exist, showing him as a private in Captain Wm. Brown Jr.'s Co., 6th Regt. Maryland Militia, 19 aug 1814 to 05 nov 1814, deserted 05 nov 1814. The seige of Ft. McHenry occurred September 13-14, 1814, preceded by General Ross burning Washington, DC and taking Alexandria, VA.

It seems logical that he was named after someone named John Wingate, and for some definite reason. In fact, there are more than a few men with Maryland roots who were given this name. Who was the original John Wingate? One possibility, apparently from about the right period and area, was the John Wingate born 10 sep 1703 in Amesbury, MA who settled first in Dover, Delaware and later in Maryland. He is said to have served in the Revolutionary War and died 19 feb 1784 (F. W. Beers' Gazetteer and biographical record of Genesee County, New York 1788-1890, p. 561). There are, however, some problems with this account, such as the competing birth on 19 sep 1703 of Rev. Paine Wingate, evidently the one who should be the father of the John Wingate who died in 1784 — but John the son of Paine is elsewhere said to have been born in 1734 and died in 1819. Further, men were already being named after a John Wingate as early as the 1740's in New England.

However, it is in Cecil Co., MD and perhaps in neighboring Delaware where we find several men named after John Wingate.

The source of the family notes stating that Lucy Jane and Georgette were sisters was Carrie O'Hara Twombly. The information appeared in Whiteside notes compiled by Lydell Whiteside.

Oscar MCCOY       (ID #I4964)

(male)
Father: David MCCOY (b. BEF 1798, d. 1829)
Mother: Louisa MARCEL (b. 23 SEP 1799, d. 26 FEB 1885)

Family 1 : Luticia STUART (b. 17 MAR 1823, d. AFT 1844)
  1.  David C. MCCOY (b. 1841, d. 23 JUL 1878)

Oscar would have been living with his mother and stepfather in 1840, and was dead by 1850. He was in Montgomery Co., OH by early 1841. Between 1841 and 1844, he had 2 children. Oscar and his wife are believed to have died after the rest of the family moved to Brown Co., IL, and son David is living with a seemingly unrelated family in 1850. Foster family is: Joseph McCammon b. 1800 PA, cabinet maker, wife Maria b. 1820 NJ, son John E. b. 1837 OH. Carol Wilsey Bell's Ohio Wills & Estates records an estate administration in 1844 for an Oscar McCoy in Butler Co, OH, listed as a-t7 p 342 (Administrations and Letters Testamentary, vol. 7, p 342). This should be checked, as well as guardianship proceedings.

Genealogist Dick Gault was able to locate the estate file for Oscar at the Butler Co. court house. The file provides the widow's given name and contains several inventories. It is evident that Oscar was a carpenter who made cabinetry and furniture of cherry and maple. The file says that Letitia then had 2 children, though only one is now know to the rest of the family. Guardianship file should tell us about the missing child and the death date of the widow.

It is possible that Oscar was related by marriage to Joseph McCammon. They were both cabinet makers, and it seems likely that they worked together at some point, most likely in Montgomery Co. Joseph married first Eliza Jane Burns on 14 jun 1833 (supposedly in Montgomery Co., but I could not find the record there). She died 04 feb 1839, and Joseph then remarried to Maria, born about 1820 in New Jersey (1850 census; this marriage likewise not recorded in Montgomery Co., perhaps because marriages for the years 1849-1850 are lost). By his first marriage, Joseph had Joseph Emery McCammon b. 08 aug 1837, who was listed in error as John E. McCammon in the 1850 census. Information on the Joseph McCammon family was posted on the internet by Catherine Hecker, cohecker@hotmail.com.

It is just possible that Maria was the sister of Luticia Stuart who married Oscar McCoy, as that would make the McCammon family in-laws and would explain the fact that Oscar's son David was living with the McCammon family in 1850, rather than with Oscar's relatives. Nevertheless, it is clear that Oscar had moved to Butler Co. by the time of his death, and left an estate there. He does not seem to have left an estate in Montgomery Co. It appears that Oscar died before Luticia, and she probably moved with her children to Montgomery Co. before she, too, died.

[1054] Estate adm. there 09 mar 1844, but son David is living with Joseph McClammon family in Dayton in 1850. 1972 History of Brown Co., IL indicates Oscar and his wife died likely of TB and Roger O'Hare went to Ohio to bring back David.
