He arrived at Philadelphia with his family and other settlers who ended up at Vevay, Indiana, on 25 jul 1817 on the ship John from Amsterdam. His passport, issued by Jean Pierre de Chambrier, Governor and Lieutenant-General of the Principality of Neuchâtel, is now in the hands of descendants. It is dated 17 mar 1817 and lists his wife Marianne Haldimann age 27, plus three children not named, ages 6 years, 3 1/2 years, and 18 months. It was to be delivered to Le Locle, and it says that Daniel Buren was a laborer "of Gros Affoltern", and a native of Le Locle. The reference to Grossaffoltern tells us that his family had hereditary citizenship there. Modern families using the spellings "de Buren" and "von Büren" are both recognized as having citizenship at Grossaffoltern. The church records at Le Locle, as well as other records, tell us that the family came from the village of Ammerzwil in the parish of Grossaffoltern.
There are several Buren families in the church records of Le Locle. One of them, a Jacob who was the son of Benedict, came from "Martzwil" or "Mattsvil", probably modern Matzwyl. The others were eventually connected through the relationships stated in the baptismal records. Benedict son of Benedict Buren of Amersvill and his wife Marianne daughter of Isaac Huguenin baptised a son Benedict at Le Locle 28 jun 1800. The baptisms of the succeeding children of this couple at Le Locle include one for Rosalie (15 aug 1805), at which the sponsors were Daniel Buren, brother of the father of the child, and Henriette Buren, sister of the father of the child. The same Henriette, apparently, was also a sponsor for the baptism of Daniel's daughter Célestine in 1811. Thus, Daniel, Benedict, and Henriette were siblings, all children of the elder Benedict of Ammerzwil.
A tombstone transcript for the Vevay Cemetery gives his birth date as 05 jul 1810, but that transcript also says he was born in Scotland! Since the family record of the baptism of Daniel's son Emile matches exactly with the data recorded both at Le Locle and Grossaffoltern, the birth and baptismal dates for Daniel recorded in these parishes should be preferred.
The passport bears several annotations on the outside, in Dutch, German, and French:

Thus, after the passport was issued on 17 mar 1817, it was still necessary to obtain the permission of the Dutch chargé d'affaires in Switzerland. They probably arrived in Basel on 26 mar 1817 and departed on 02 apr 1817. The formalities in Amsterdam included a final approval by the Swiss chargé d'affaires there. The various numbers assigned at each of these official contacts imply the existence of registers kept by each of these authorities, which, if they could be located, would surely reveal the names of many other travelers.

An "extract" of his baptismal record at Le Locle was made by the minister Favre on 07 mar 1817 and sent to the family's home parish of Grossaffoltern. It was recorded there by the minister Christoph Fröhlich, who made a notation on the front of the document, "Eingeschrieben in das Taufbuch der auswarts wohnenden Gemeindsbürger, page 31." Then the document was returned to the family and carried to America. The document is now in the collection of papers from the Buren, Schenk, and Thiebaud families at Hanover College, Hanover, Indiana.
