At first, it seemed his baptism must be the one dated 20 mar 1757, but the name of the father, which may originally have said something like Charles Emanuel, has been obliterated and replaced by Abraham David. The name of the mother appears to be Susanne Dubois. It might be that the original record was in error, and that someone supposed the name of the father was wrong, instead of the name of the mother, and so altered the record accordingly. However, the rest of the records concerning Charles Emanuel are unanimous in making him the son of Emanuel Haldiman. Another difficulty with this parentage, however, is that the next child of his couple, Abraham Henri, was baptised only a few months later. Was Charles Emanuel actually the son of a real Abraham David Haldiman who has otherwise escaped detection, and then raised by Emanuel Haldiman and his wife? Finally, the answer emerged in the church books of Walkringen, which contain a list of the children of Emanuel Haldiman and "Esabeau" Jacot des Combes that were forwarded from Le Locle. The first of these is the baptism of Charles Emanuel, 04 apr 1756 &mdash but there does not seem to be such an entry at Le Locle! The baptisms at Le Locle skip from 21 mar 1756 at the bottom of one page to 11 apr 1756 at the top of the next page. But looking more closely at the record at Walkringen, we noticed the notation in the margin, "Locle Valangin". The original record was finally discovered at Valangin. The group of baptisms recorded at Walkringen in which this record is found includes the children of this couple up to 1767 without a break.
He died by a self-inflcted gunshot., according to the death record.

Catechumen at Les Ponts-de-Martel, Christmas, 1773. This entry includes his date of baptism and calls him Charles Emanuel son of Abraham David son of the late Daniel Haldiman. It also gives his date of baptism, 26 mar 1757, but does not mention that this baptism was recorded at Le Locle, and not at Les Ponts-de-Martel. The same baptismal date is recorded at Walkringen (forwarded from Le Locle). The original baptismal record, at Le Locle, could be read either as 20 or 26 mar 1757 (and indeed, it was read both ways— the death record at La Chaux-du-Milieu read it as 20 mar 1757), but, more importantly, it has been altered. The name of the father was first entered as something like Charles Emanuel Haldiman, then lined out and replaced with Abraham David Haldiman. The name of the mother is listed as Susanne Dubois. It should also be noted that the baptism of the other Charles Emanuel Haldiman, found in the registers at Walkringen as part of a list of baptisms forwarded from Le Locle, is not found in the corresponding register at Le Locle, perhaps due to the loss of a page. This situation led to considerable confusion, since the registers at Le Locle, where Marianne Haldiman and her husband Daniel Buren raised their family, contained no indication that Marianne's family had ever lived at Les Ponts-de-Martel. The existence of two men called Charles Emanuel Haldiman, both apparently baptised at Le Locle, completed the confusion. It was only when the certificates of baptism and confirmation that Marianne had carried to America came to light that the missing chapter was revealed.
The record of his second marriage, to Marie Anne (or Marianne) Isabeau Humbert, contains the following notation: "Je n'ai béni le mariage de ces époux qui sont germains qu'après avoir vu une permission signée du Président du Conseil d'Etat de publier leurs annonces, lesquelles annonces ont été publiées conformément à l'usage. Barrely, P[asteur]." Thus, the bride and groom were first cousins. This is explained by the discovery of the parentage of the bride. Her mother was Catherine, daughter of the late Isaac Dubois. Catherine was thus the sister of Susanne Dubois, mother of Charles Emanuel Haldiman.
