The records of the parish of Dombresson, especially before about 1700, are among the worst we have ever seen. There are sections that are so badly written that we may never be sure of the surnames. There are long gaps in the marriage records, and many baptisms apparently omitted and then later inserted in microscopic script, suggesting that there must have been many more that were omitted that were never called to the attention of later pastors. Also, more than a few people whose origin in later records is listed as the parish of Dombresson are simply not found. Either their baptisms are among those omitted or illegible, or else the parents had already left the parish, and the baptisms are in fact recorded in some other parish that has not yet been discovered.
Marie Magdelaine's baptism, at least, was legible. The name of her mother is not known because of a long gap in the marriage records and the fact that the name of the mother was not often recorded in the baptisms from that period. She is on the list of catechumens for 1714, by which time her father had died.
