His testament was recorded in Switzerland Co., Indiana (Probate Order Book I, 1814-1824, p. 71) in the original French, with an English translation. The testament is dated 10 oct 1818, proved 11 nov 1818. He left "un dollar" to the poor of Jefferson Township, $100 to each of his three brothers-in-law Leonard, Pierre, and Jean Serrot, and the remainder to his wife Marie Serrot. His estate was still in probate at least as late as 1836, still administred by his wife and by "M. Serrot" (which might simply mean "Monsieur Serrot").
François Carteron was part of the French settlement at Gallipolis, Gallia Co., Ohio, where he was given lot 236. He is on the passenger list for the ship Patriot, which left Le Havre 19 feb 1790 and arrived at Alexandria, Virginia 03 may 1790. He was then age 20, from a place that was transcribed from the passenger list as "Coissy-le-Bar". While there are several places called Coissy, none is particularly close to the district of Bar, but there is a Coiffy-le-Bas in the modern Département of Haute-Marne. These place names (one false, the other real) would be virtually indistinguishable in some varieties of the script of the 18th Century. He was not married when he arrived in America, but among the settlers of Gallipolis there was a Pierre Serrot.
His baptism was indeed found at Coiffy-le-Bas. The priest was called to the house by the midwife and baptised the child on the same day he was born, because he was not expected to live. (AD52 1 E 135/2, image 235 on the web site of the Archives of Haute-Marne.)
