The record of her birth notes that her parents were married "civilement" (that is, in a civil ceremony) at Courtelary 12 oct 1805. Courtelary and the surrounding area was part of the French département of Mont-Terrible (and later part of Haut-Rhin) during the Napoleonic era (1793-1815), a fact which may explain why true civil registration was possible. For this period, it is sometimes necessary to check both church and civil records.
The similarity of her name with that of her brother Adolphe Louis makes us suspect that the latter died in infancy.
