His obituary in the Vevay Reveille (03 feb 1881) gives his date of birth in "Court Leari" in the Canton of "Burn", Switzerland, and says that he arrived at Philadelphia in 1818 with his father's family.

Birth date computed from age at death transcribed from the Vevay Cemetery gives 10 jun 1777, not consistent with the baptismal record at St. Imier; perhaps the inscription on the tombstone has been misread? (In fact, the date of death has also been transcribed variously: 21 nov 1838 or 21 oct 1836.) His wife is listed as "Marion" in Switzerland County records, and Marie Ann in the cemetery record. There is a Fréderic Louis Grisard in the church records of St. Imier (the parish includes Villeret) in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, but that record does not include his son Fréderic Louis who listed his date of birth and those of his children in a Genevan psalter that is now in the Switzerland County Public Library. It may be that the son Fréderic Louis was baptised elsewhere, possibly in civil records.
The baptismal record of his daughter Adèle Louise, 17 aug 1817 at St. Imier, notes that he had been married "civilement" at Courtelary, 12 oct 1805. A similar notation in a baptismal record in 1816 for the Flotron family clarifies the situation, referring to a civil marriage at St. Imier in 1803: "A cette époque il a y lacune dans notre registre de bénédictions de mariages." Evidently, during the period of the French occupation, the French bureaucracy of the "état-civil" had to some extent supplanted the role of the churches in recording marriages. The indexes ("tables décennales") for the état civil at Courtelary are available on microfilm through the Family History Library, but, apparently, not the registers themselves. The marriage of Frédéric Louis Grisard to Marie Anne Langel is indeed found there, dated 12 oct 1805.
Perret Dufour's Swiss Settlement of Switzerland County, Indiana says that this Fréderic Louis Grisard had a brother-in-law named Belrichard. This person is apparently the John Henry Belrichard, with wife Susette, who is mentioned several times in Switzerland County documents 1820-1824. Perret Dufour says they moved to Louisville.
Since his wife apparently came from Courtelary, where the name Belrichard is also well known, it may be that his wife's sister was the wife of Jean Henri Belrichard. The index for the état-vivil of Courtelary also lists this marriage: Jean Henri Belrichard to Susanne Langel, 02 mar 1805.

In addition to the certain mentions of the Grissod family, there are a number of citations that suggest an alternate name. Thus, 26 apr 1532, we found mention of property owned by Johannis Poschet alias Grissodi and formerly by the late Johannis Grissodi of Payerne (Pierre Chuard, notary). Is this a reference to Jean Grissod, ward ("nutrictus") of the elder Jean Grissod? Or an alias of the entire Grissod family at Payerne?

Will dated Saturday before Palm Sunday, 1508, but he is clearly alive at least as late as the end of 1509, when he buys property in his capacity as gouverneur of the Confrérie du St. Esprit of Payerne (Pierre Gachet, notary). Will as copied in the surviving minutaire of Pierre Gachet has blanks where the name of his daughter and grandson should be, and is poorly legible. Also evidently still alive when, 02 nov 1517, he sells property to Gaspard Planche (Pierre Chuard, notary, ACV DP 16/4, inserted after fol. 109).
A document recorded by Pierre Chuard, notary at Payerne (ACV DP 16), 01 mar 1532, shows that Jean Grissod left a "nutrictus" or illegitimate/adopted son Jean, who at that date was receiving his settlement from Jean Planche, testamentary heir of the late Jean Grissod.

Document of Jean Proux, April 1474, concerns sale of property (?) to the monks of the abbey of Payerne by Jean Grissod son of Pierre Grissod. It appears that Pierre had a brother Galcherin Grissod who was a priest ("cappelanus", or chaplain). The document is heavily abbreviated and in a very rapid hand, difficult to decipher. It may mention the connection to the de la Planche family.

Estimated date of birth from date of last child. Her surname is uncertain. At various times we find spellings such as Grevet, Gevier (Grenier?), etc. According to Paul Wüst and Grace Wicks (The Jaïn Story, 1980), her marriage contract with Philippe Jaïn was recorded 17 oct 1662 by Jaques De L'Etraz, notary (this is the spelling used by the Archives Cantonales Vaudoises, where his surviving registers are catalogued as ACV Dk 40/1-72, inclusive dates 1648-1725, not yet examined, available on Family History Library microfilms #896431-896433).
The ambiguity of the surname results from at least three separate causes: First, spellings were extremely variable at the time; second, the script itself is ambiguous, in that "u", "v", and "n" appear exactly the same; third, the pronunciation of final syllables was different, such that the names "Morel", "Moret", and "Moré" sounded identical, a problem that also affects the spellings "Grivel" and "Grivet", referring to the same family, even though modern Swiss speakers do pronounce the final "l". However, it is probably significant that the church records that mention Pernette only rarely call her Grivel, apparently distinguishing her from the indigenous and much better known Grivel family.
