Various genealogies on the internet, none giving primary sources, identify this person as Claude Benjamin "Pierre" Jaïn. The way this name is formatted suggests the supposition that a person baptised as Claude Benjamin Jaïn was then known during his adult life as Pierre Jaïn. However, no evidence in support of this assertion has come to our attention in the church records and the registers of the notaries of Geneva, where the progenitor seems always to be called Pierre. When the family acquired citizenship at Morges in 1665, according to secondary sources, they were said to have originated in Paris. A much more direct statement in the testament of Pierre's son Samuel says they were from Vitry-le-François, in the modern département of Marne, France, a city that had a significant protestant population from at least 1561. However, the protestant church records of Vitry have been lost. The family story further asserts that "Claude Benjamin" came to Geneva after the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572, a statement that is completely plausible, but so far not supported by any contemporary source, as far as we have been able to determine. It should be noted that there is a significant gap in the records of Geneva; the lists of "habitants" (non-citizens given permission to reside there) are incomplete during the 1570's and 1580's.
The surname appears in the early church records of Geneva (mostly at La Madelaine) as Jehan or Jean, but soon turns into Jayn or Jaïn. The published genealogies give a death date for this "Claude Benjamin" or "Pierre" of 17 aug 1591 (we have not located this record, which is reported by secondary sources to give his age as 47 years and origin as Vitry-le-François)), an approximate birth date of 1554 in France, and make him the son of another Claude Jaïn born about 1529.
It is uncommon to find individuals using more than a single baptismal name in France in the last half of the 16th Century, but it is certainly not unknown. Further, it is not unprecedented for someone to use a different given name as an adult at this period, but, again, it is a rare occurrence to have any evidence for this practice. For both of these situations to apply to the same individual would have to be considered extremely unusual, so it is important that any evidence be clearly documented.
There is a "fonds privé" at the ACV for this family, P Jaïn.
Paul Wüst and Grace Wicks, both descendants of the Jaïn family of Morges, published The Jain Story in 1980 (translated by Wicks from the original manuscript in French by Wüst, compiled in 1949 and with later revisions). From this work, we can see the origins of the story of Claude Benjamin. First, the family possesses a bible published in Geneva in 1588, with various annotations on the cover and flyleaves. The most interesting of these is "Cette bible sainte appartient à Claude Benjamin Jaïn de Joyeuse le brave garçon par la grace de Dieu 1604". Second, the story about the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572 is attributed to Dr. Ferdinand Jaïn (1813-1887). As relayed by descendants, the story says that a family called de Joyeuse, living in Paris at that time, had six sons. Three were Protestant, three were Catholic. Both parents and two of the Protestant sons were killed, the remaining Protestant son, Claude, survived, then changed his name and went to Geneva.
As to the bible, it occurs to us that the Claude Benjamin in question could not have been the Pierre who died in Geneva in 1591, for the date 1604 would then make no sense. The fact that the bible was published in Geneva is not relevant, since bibles, religious tracts, and other banned books printed in Geneva, Basel, Amsterdam, etc. found their way into all corners of France in remarkably short time during the whole period of the wars of religion. One solution to the mystery could be that the owner of the bible was not Pierre, but a cousin of his, possibly the son of the Claude who was supposed to have survived the massacre. The massacre, by the way, was not limited to Paris; within days, similar outbursts had erupted in many other places. But the story passed down in the family might have become attached to the wrong family, so that the six sons, of whom Claude was the only surviving Protestant son, would have been first cousins of the Pierre who settled in Geneva, and Claude Benjamin would most likely be a son of that Claude. It should also be noted here that family names in the 16th Century were still unstable in many areas. The inscription on the bible suggests that Jaïn and de Joyeuse might have been used interchangeably (French genealogists would call these "dit" names or aliases). Another use of compound surnames results from appending the name of a fief held by a particular branch of a family to their original family name: thus, "Jaïn de Joyeuse" could signify a branch of the Jaïn family who held the seigneurie of Joyeuse. Whatever the source of the alternative surname, a descendant, Jean François Jaïn (1670-1745) chose to use "Joyfull" (a direct translation of Joyeuse, but note also that the masculine form is joyeux, so we are dealing with a toponym and not a personal attribute or nickname) as his surname while he was in England. Under this scenario, we would have to suppose that the bible came into the hands of Samuel Jaïn or one of the other children of Pierre after 1604, perhaps after the death of Claude Benjamin. This hypothesis would make Pierre the first cousin once removed (or in French, "oncle à la mode de Bretagne") of Claude Benjamin. Samuel would be a second cousin of Claude Benjamin. This notion is offered to demonstrate that the problems inherent in the family lore admit of other solutions, and to suggest other avenues of research.
The children shown here for Pierre and his wife Jeanne Aymard (her family name omitted in most of the records, however) are based on the chart prepared by Paul Wüst in The Jain Story.
Acquired citizenship at Geneva 30 apr 1617 for the price of 10 écus and other considerations.

The baptism gives his surname as Jehan. The testament of "Samuel fils de feu Pierre Jayne de Vitry le François", maitre cordonnier, father of Abraham and Gabriel, and husband of Jeanne Cassin, was recorded 15 jul 1623 by the notary Pierre Gautier (vol. 5, fols 5-8). This is the only document so far discovered the gives the origins of the family. He made another testament 16 mar 1637 (?), recorded by the notary Isaac DeMonthouz (vol. 28, fol. 148 — a notation in the index tells us that fol. 148 comes after fol. 153!), by which time his brother Abraham had returned to Vitry-le-François. Marriage settlements from about 1601 were recorded by the notary Etienne Rivilliod, vol. 1, fols 129 and 173. Samuel contracted to take is brother Pierre as an apprentice about 1600, recorded by the same notary, vol. 2, somewhere between folios 160 and 183 (the folio number is illegible in the index; the document concerns placement as an apprentice of Pierre son of the late Pierre Jayn and Jeann Eymard, chez Samuel Jain son frère). He acquired citizenship at Geneva 09 may 1617 for the price of 10 écus.
