He arrived with a large family, and probably a brother, in New York City, 12 jul 1834, on the ship Renown from Le Havre. The passenger list is extremely faded, but it includes Pierre Batschelet from Switzerland, with his wife Marie and their nine children, plus a person indexed by Ancestry.com as Ingan B. Batschelet, but to me the name looks more like an attempt at Jacques D., age 53.
In the 1850 census, he is in Madison Township, Jefferson Co., Indiana, p. 10b, indexed on the familysearch.org web site as "Bachtett". This happened because the stroke that crosses the final two t's also crosses the l. His second wife Magdalena and his son Jacob are living with him. Jacob is age 27 in this census, so we can see that he is the person listed as Jacques on the passenger list. All of the children on the passenger list are mentioned in his will of 01 mar 1869 (Jefferson Co. Will Book A, p. 450). Birth date from the tombstone in Olive Branch Cemetery, Madison Township, Jefferson Co., Indiana, but the transcribed date of death, May 17, 1879, appears to be in error, since the dates for the will are in 1869.
His will suggested that his widow Magdalena would go to live with his son Frederick, but where was Frederick in 1850, 1860, and 1870? We have not yet found him on the censuses.
