It is not entirely certain that there was only one Vincent Dufour at Chernex in the middle of the 17th Century.
This one made his testament 28 jan 1672 (Jean Pierre Besson, notary, ACV DS 106/2 fol. 350), naming his children Abraham, Claude, Jean, Antoine, Susanne (wife of François son of André Cochard), Magdelaine (wife of Jean Martin, resident at Le Chęne), and Jeanne. He also left a codicil dated 03 feb 1672.

Since there were two men with this name of about the same age at Sales, it has not been possible to establish which children of "Abraham Dufour de Sales" belong to which Abraham. We suspect that David son of Abraham Dufour, baptised 26 jan 1650, belongs here, because there was another baptism on the same day for Claudaz daughter of Jean Dufour, brother of the said Abraham—Abraham son of David is not known to have had a brother Jean. If that is correct, then Esther, daughter of Abraham Dufour de Sales, baptised 15 jul 1649, may be a daughter of the other Abraham.
No wife is mentioned for any of the later baptisms of children of "Abraham Dufour de Sales" until 1672, when the wife is Susanne Favrod. Since the previous child of "Abraham Dufour de Sales" was baptised in 1661, it seems unlikely that the one mentioned in 1672 is the same person.

There is a death record that might be his, for "Abraham François de Sales", who died 12 jan 1785 and was buried 14 jan 1785, age at death given as 64. There does not seem to be any other baptism that corresponds to this record.

The marriage record in 1610 give the name of his deceased father, and also the name of his wife's previous husband. But, by 1624, there are a few references to Jaquemaz, wife of Adam Dufour, and apparently no other Adam Dufour in the parish of Montreux. It is possible that Anteine died and that Adam remarried. The marriage records for Montreux begin in November, 1609, but the pages of this section of ACV Eb 85/1 appear to have been collated incorrectly, with at least one leaf missing (July, 1612-January, 1613; no marriages between 13 mar 1613 and 09 may 1613; most of 1615 appears to be missing as well). These pages, damaged and numbered separately, were collated after the main group of marriage covering 01 jan 1616 to 1631. It seems likely that a second marriage of Adam occurred during one of these gaps. It may be possible to find a solution to this problem in the records of the notaries.
There was another marriage as well: there is a mention of Marguerite, wife of Adam Dufour, juge, at a baptism of 05 may 1632 . They were married 05 mar 1632, very definitely from Sâles.
It is also possible that there was even a fourth marriage, though the date cannot yet be specified. In a terrier of 1648 (ACV Fe 150, fols. 320-332), there is a passing reference in a "reconnaissance" for the heirs of the late David Dufour, Adam's brother, of property belonging to "Adam Dufour par ususfruict de Vincendas Michel sa femme que fust de ladicte Vincendaz". Adam would not be the usufruct unless this wife were already dead, and there were no children from this marriage. It should be noted, however, that this terrier does not contain a reconnaissance for Adam in the capacity of usufruct of Vincendas Michel, even though there is one for Adam as usufruct of the other childless wife, Anteine Dubochet. It is still possible that the missing reconnaissance is in one of the other volumes compiled by the same Commissaire for the remainder of the Barony of Châtelard. However, another possibility is that this passage is erroneous. Another reconnaissance, beginning on fol. 359, mentions property that had been recognized circa 1592 by "Vincendas fille de feu Mermet Michel femme de Nycod du Boschet soit par ledict son mary". While it is highly probable that there have existed many women at Montreux called Vincendas Dubochet, this passage raises the possibility that, in the first passage, the Vincendas in question was his mother-in-law rather than his wife—but in that case, the concept of usufruct would probably not apply.
Also in Fe 150, there are several references to property that Adam Dufour owned by inheritance, specifically maternal succession, that had previously been recognized by Hellige (the more modern form is Elčge) daughter of Jean de Pallens, widow of Jean de la Tour of Chailly. Elčge was probably the sister of Adam's mother Pernette de Pallens. Adam's brother David had also inherited from Elčge, as did Pierre son of Vincent Lambert — this Pierre was a nephew of Elčge.
Some of the most important registers of the notaries of Montreux appear to have been lost, such as those of Jean Poysat and David Basin. For Poysat, the ACV has his incomplete "seconde registre" covering 1642-1648 (ACV DS 87bis/1), and another register covering 1648-1656 (DS 87bis/2). The first of these has several transactions concerning Adam Dufour of Sâles. On fol. 76v, dated 08 mar 1645, François Vauthey of Les Planches, Lieutenant de Chillon, acting on behalf of his wife Genette Wychoud, acknowledges receipt of a bequest from the estate of the late Discret Pierre Aubort of Les Planches, delivered by the (residual?) heirs of that estate, Adam Dufour of Sâles as the father and administrator of his children by his second wife the late Jaquema Wychoud (for 2/3 of this estate), and Gamaliel Dufour of Sâles on behalf of his wife Jeanne Vuychoud, who was the widow of the said late Aubort (for the remaining 1/3 of the estate). There is mention of a testament of this Pierre Aubort, and that it contained a bequest of 1000 florins for the Vauthey children. The testament itself has not been located. Another transaction, fol. 99, is a "reconnaissance" dated 03 aug 1645, in which Adam Dufour acknowledges an obligation to the charitable hospital of Montreux that was previously acknowledged by Pierre, son of the late Antoine Aubort. Also, fol. 160v, dated 30 jan 1646, Discret Gamaliel Dufour of Sâles, presently residing at Les Planches, with his wife Jeanne Wichod, widow in her first marriage of the late Pierre Aubort, and she as co-heir for 1/3 of the estate of the said late Aubort, acknowledges a debt to the charitable hospital of Montreux. These transactions help to establish the order of the marriages. Among other conclusions, Jaquemaz Vuichoud was definitely the second wife of Adam Dufour. (François Vauthey des Planches married Jenette daughter of Jean Vuichod 21 feb 1619. Magdelaine, daughter of Pierre Aubort and Jeanne Vuechoud was baptised 23 aug 1635. It is possible that the estate of Pierre Aubort consisted of property from a prior wife, which, upon his death, would go to her residual heirs.)

His baptism is not recorded at Montreux, unless in error as the son of Abraham Dufour of Sâles in 1660. He is mentioned in the church records at Montreux for the first time in the baptism 06 oct 1672 of Adam son of Abraham Dufour and Susanne Favrod, at which the sponsors are the Lieutenant Daniel Dufour and his wife Marguerite Bazin, with a notation that the child was named after the son of the said Lieutenant. Since Adam was not named directly as a sponsor at this baptism, it seems most likely that he had not yet attained the age of first communion.
Adam next appears at Montreux as a sponsor for the baptism of Daniel Adam, son of Gabriel du Cotterd and Marie Dufour, 13 dec 1682. The sponsors are Daniel Dufour Lieutenant ričre le Châtelard, Adam Dufour son fils, Madame sa femme, et Claudine leur fille. That is, Daniel and his wife Marguerite, their daughter Claudine (baptised in 1669), and their son Adam, now evidently past the age of first communion, typically about 17, but apparently as early as 13, since no distinction is made for Claudine in this record.
Adam is a key figure in the history of the Dufour family that settled in Vevay, Indiana. A family document dated 24 jun 1762, from the deliberations of the town council of La Noville and Rennaz, near Vevay, Switzerland, was transcribed and translated by Perret Dufour (The Swiss Settlement of Switzerland County, Indiana, volume 13 of Indiana Historical Collections, Indiana Historical Commission, 1925, see pp. 220-223). It is the oldest document cited, and its rather obscure content suggests that it must have found its way to Indiana with the original settlers; it does not appear that Perret Dufour had investigated the Swiss records, or he probably would have reported something more significant. The issue before the council of La Noville and Rennaz was the privileges and franchises of the Dufour family. Perret Dufour's transcript contains some obvious errors, likely due to lack of experience with the old script, but the facts can be made to match the genealogy of the Dufour family in the church records of Montreux. The document says that Daniel Dufour was admitted as a member of the commune of La Noville and Rennaz on 09 mar 1678 (signed by the notary Jaquemin, whose records, unfortunately, do not seem to have survived). Further, it cites a marriage contract for Daniel; Perret Dufour read the date as "1.7b 1687", which should probably be understood as 01 sep 1687. The notary was Poisat, whom we can identify from the church records as Jean Poysat. Some of Poysat's notarial registers survive for the years 1642-1656, but they do not contain the marriage contract. However, considering the dates when Poysat was active, as indicated in the church records at Montreux, as well as the logic of the document of 1762, we suggest the year should have been read as 1657 instead of 1687. The marriage in question should have produced the next person cited, Adam Dufour, in order for the hereditary privileges of citizenship to have descended to him and to his children. The sons of Adam are then cited: Pierre David, Jean Jaques Rodolph, and Etienne Pierre André. This information, according to the document, was certified by the minister Chavannes, probably César Chavannes, minister at Montreux 1716-1761, who had probably prepared a summary of the family baptisms at their request prior to his death. Now, in 1762, Jean Jaques Rodolph was still alive, but had retired from his positions of Judge and Syndic at Montreux. Jean Jaques Rodolph was accompanied by his son Jean Jaques, claiming their rights at La Noville and Rennaz. The name of the Curial or clerk who prepared the document is not given. In hopes of finding further details, we will examine the surviving records of the notaries of the area. (Did the minister Chavannes of Montreux, or one of his sons, also ministers in the area, locate the baptism of Adam Dufour, not recorded at Montreux? Some sort of document proving the parentage of Adam must have been included in the presentation to the town council in 1762.)
In 1709, he is listed as régent d'école at Chernex, on the occasion of the baptism of his daughter Marie (this record also lists his wife Susanne Wichoud).
Since the document of 1762 names only three sons of Adam, we may presume that the other sons had already died, had left no male heirs, and had probably died before their father. In other words, it was these three sons of Adam who succeeded him when he died. There is a burial record at Montreux 06 jan 1729 that may be his: "Adam Dufour de Sale".
