Claude DUFOUR (DE VERNEX) (ID #I3861)

He was apparently the elder of the two sons of Jaquet, because he apparently made a "reconnaissance" in his own name in one of the first cycle of terriers compiled by Anselme Cuccuat, circa 1520. His father Jaquet was already deceased by that date. His reconnaissance of 15 feb 1543 is in the terrier Fe 112, part of the second cycle of terriers compiled by Cuccuat, but it does not mention a brother Jehan, suggesting that the account of the family in the next terrier, Fe 129, is either ambiguous or else in error. From Fe 112, we might suppose that Jehan, apparently the first of the family to live at Sâles, was a son of Claude, and not his brother. Fe 129, however, is very explicit on the line of descent, but less so on the terms of the reconnaissances recorded in the two cycles of terriers by Cuccuat. The most exact summary of what Fe 129 says is that (fol. 446v) it was Claude alone who was the subject of the reconnaissance in the first terrier by Cuccuat, and then in the second terrier of Cuccuat by Jehan. While we found Claude in Fe 112 (from the second cycle of terriers by Cuccuat), we did not find Jehan, so it may be that he will be found in another volume from that series. In Fe 129, the first property described, following these statements of the history of the reconnaissances, is a vineyard at Chernex, so it might be that Claude's supposed brother Jehan had settled at Chernex and should therefore be sought in Fe 109.

The burial record that may be his, 20 feb 1747, calls him "Monsieur le Curial David Dufour des Planches et du Chatelar", a construction that cannot be intrepreted with certainty. He is described as David Dufour des Planches in the death record of his daughter Marguerite in 1772.

He attended Trinity College in 1774. Under the patronage of Spencer Compton, 8th Earl of Northampton, he was appointed rector at Walcott, Warwickshire, and later at Moulsoe, Buckinhamshire. He was also the personal chaplain of the Earl. However, he seems to have traveled with the Earl, and thus must have been absent most of the time from these parishes. The Earl had stayed for a time at Avenches; his wife died there in 1781, and the Earl was so affected by this loss that he took up residence in a thatched cottage in the garden of the residence at Avenches, which had been a favorite of his wife. The cottage was gradually enlarged to include a salon, a library, etc., and the Earl remained there until his death in 1796. Gabriel Dufour was certainly either at Avenches or nearby during much of this period, since three of his children were baptised at Meyriez. Their baptisms were later copied into the registers of his home parish, Montreux. He was in Montreux in 1802 when he and his son Spencer Charles signed the petition of 16 nov 1802 asking Napoleon to include certain provisions in a projected constitution for the new Canton of Vaud.
