Some of the children believed to be his are marked "NB" in the church records of Montreux. The reason his children were highlighted in this way is not known.
He is apparently the same David Dufour of Sâles who married Claudaz Dupraz. She appears as his widow at a baptism in Montreux 19 aug 1649, along with Discret Daniel Dufour, whom we initially presumed to be the son of the same David Dufour by his first wife. In 1652, apparently the same widow is called Susanne Dupraz and appears in the same capacity with Egrčge Daniel Dufour.
The earliest certain mention in the church records seems to be his appearance as a sponsor at a baptism on 21 jun 1607, as "David Dufour de Sales". He was certainly past the age of first communion at that point (thus, likely over the age of 17), and his baptism does not seem to be recorded at Montreux, where the surviving records of baptisms begin in 1590. Thus, we place his date of birth around 1585. He was already dead by 1648, when his heirs made a "reconnaissance" for his property (ACV Fe 150, see below). A transaction recorded 21 mar 1690 by Jean Puenzieux, notary (ACV DS 88/13), concerns debts of the Ducrest family to the charitable hospital of Montreux, resulting from two legacies, one from Discret David Dufour, Lieutenant du Chastellard dated 12 jun 1647, the other from David's nephew Discret Daniel Dufour dated 06 may 1676. The document of 12 jun 1647 should thus be the testament of David, and the other document the testament of Daniel Dufour.
Among his contemporaries at Sâles who are noted in the church records, there is Adam, son of the late Antoine Dufour of Sâles, who married Antheine, widow of the late Claude Vuchod (=Vuichoud) of the same place on 16 dec 1610. Unfortunately, the surviving marriages for the parish of Montreux begin only at the end of 1609. Since the same names are used in both Dufour families, it is entirely plausible that the late Antoine was also the father of David, but there is at least one other possibility, a Jaquet Dufour (alias Testa) "de Sales ou de Sionzy" who baptised sons Antoine and Jean in 1595 and 1597. It will be necessary to find additional evidence in the notaries or in the terriers, which might be expected also to reveal the name of David's first wife.
The parentage of David is conclusively settled in a terrier for the Barony of Châtelard, 1648 (ACV Fe 150), in which there are many passages that make David a brother of Adam Dufour, sons of Antoine Dufour. Further, a "reconnaissance" for David's sons establishes their parentage and tells us which ones had survived to that date (fols. 320-332): his sons are listed as Gamaliel, Pierre, and Daniel, and another son, Jaques, had died and left children of his own. The name of the first wife of the late David Dufour is given as Anne Vaulthay on fol. 385 of the same terrier and elsewhere in the same volume.

The marriage record does not give his parentage, and the baptisms of his children do not reveal anything about his relationships. He may be the David son of Claude Dufour de Sales who died 05 jun 1793. If so, he and his wife would be third cousins, well within the premitted degree of consanguinity for marriage under the rules of Their Excellencies of Bern at that time. We found no other possible parentage for the David who married Jeanne Marguerite Dufour.
