His application for naturalization, 21 oct 1828 in Switzerland Co., Indiana, stated that he had arrived at Philadelphia in 1817, and that he was age 19 when he landed, having been born in the Canton of Basel. Therefore, we have no hesitation in asserting that he is the Matheus Maderi who appears on the passenger list of the ship John, arriving at Philadelphia 25 jul 1817, with at least 29 other passengers who settled at Vevay.
In the United States, some Madery, Medary, etc. are believed to have come from Basel families who used the spelling Madörin. The villages of Itingen and Lausen, in the modern Canton of Basel-Landschaft, both have old families who use the spelling Madöry. (His birth is not found in the index to the baptisms in the Canton of Basel-Stadt, where only a few mentions of this surname are found.)
His family is buried in section 2 of the Vevay city cemetery.

The baptismal record does not give the date of birth, but the history of the founding of the colony of Chabag gives the date 07 sep 1782, evidently based on records at Chabag. From this, we conclude that the date 07 sep 1782 is certainly an error for 1781, but that the date 07 sep is likely the correct date of birth.
When Jean Pierre and his wife arrived at Chabag in 1823, they had already been in Russia since at least 1819, and they were accompanied by their children, listed in the published account as Jean François, who had already married Catherine "Klutzpicher", Louis Henri, François, Emmanuel, Marie Louise, Amélie, and Henriette. This list should evidently be corrected by removing commas — the original list probably lacked clear punctuation, typical of the period! — to read, Jean François with his wife Catherine Klotzbücher, Louis Henri, François Emmanuel, Marie Louise Amélie, and Henriette, thus matching the baptisms recorded for this family at Blonay. The name Klotzbücher is found at Odessa.

In spite of this, her marriage is recorded at Landreville, in Champagne, where she is said to be from Viviers.
Her parentage and her age are given in the marriage record at Landreville.
