There are many mysteries surrounding this family. Existence of 3 wives from History of Shelby & Moultrie Counties., Illinois, 1881. Children are assigned according to the listed death dates of the various wives. From this information, "Alexander McCoy Jr." estate in Brown Co. would likely pertain to Alexander son of George, and not, as William Perry indicates, to Alexander McCoy the immigrant. Several of the children were married in Brown Co., IL 1860-1861 by Joseph Patterson, JP.

But how, then, to explain the guardian's bond dated 19 may 1862, in which Alexander McCoy and Abner (?) Curry are appointed as guardians of Sarah Jane McCoy and Thomas Jefferson McCoy, minor heirs of Alexander McCoy, late of Brown County, Illinois, but the word deceased lined out? (Brown Co., IL Guardian's Bonds A, p. 19). The preceding bond, issued 18 mar 1862, was for the appointment of Alexander McCoy and Alford Simpson as guardians of Alexander McCoy, minor heir of George McCoy, late of said county, deceased. Evidently, the bond of 19 may 1862 is in error, the word late should have been lined out as well, and the guardianship is for some other purpose, such as a bequest from the late mother of these children.

[14845] Likely married in Adams Co., OH, where records later than 1833 were lost in a courthouse fire. Emily Hemphill is likely related to Rachel Hemphill who m. John Morrison and moved to Shelby Co., IL -- where Alexander later lived.

[14846] Brown Co. marriage records Book A, #400. As the marriage is in 1847, after the birthdates of the first 7 children listed in the 1850 census, they are assumed to belong to his first wife, Emily Hemphill.

[14847] Assumed to have married in Brown Co., IL, because Hist. Shelby & Moultrie Cos., IL indicates they settled in Shelby Co., IL in 1864. She is mentioned in a Brown Co., IL deed on 09apr1862.
