April 10, 1926, Clarinda Journal (Iowa): Among Page county people who passed away last month, I note that there were two soldiers of the Civil war who died at College Springs....The other departed Union soldier from College Springs was Thomas P. Case, of the Tenth Kansas infantry. He went into his government's service in 1861, re-enlisted in 1864, and was honorably discharged Aug. 13, 1865, so was in the Civil War until the Union cause was victorious. He was a Methodist and a Grand Army man. When he died, he was a little past midway between 82 and 83 years of age. I knew Mr. Case for a number of years, and the longer I was acquainted with him the better I liked him. The last conversation I remember of having with him was during one of his calls at the Journal office, when we had an unusually pleasant visit--at least it was so to me. I little thought then that I should not welcome him to our office again. The longer I knew him, the more I learned that he knew. He was a bright, able, and a good man, much interested in public affairs, and devoted to the political party of his choice, the Republican. I can appreciate the truth of the following quotation concerning him, taken from the College Springs Current Press: "Mr. Case was a kind and affectionate husband and father. A useful life was his; a gleaner of friends wherever he went, and will be greatly missed."
Obituary -- T. P. Case
Thomas P. Case, son of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Case, was born August 29, 1843, near Solon, Johnston County, IA, and died March 26, 1926, at his home in College Springs, Iowa, aged 82 years & 26 days. Cause of death being bronchial pneumonia.
Mr. Case was a veteran of the Civil War. Having, at the age of 17, volunteered his service, enlisting in the Kansas Infantry, Co. F. and A. 10th Regiment, August 3, 1861. Then re-enlisting March 1, 1864, serving the entire length of the war, receiving his honorable discharge August 13, 1865, at Montgomery, Alabama. Part of his time he served as corporal. He received a wound while in service which caused him trouble the remainder of his life.
June 1, 1864, he was united in marriage to Rachel Caroline Neal of Morrison, IL, who preceded him in death 37 years. To the union was born seven children: J.B. Case of Altadena, CA; Mrs. Eliza Reed, Shambaugh, IA; Margared, deceased; T.G. Case of Douglas, WY; May, who died in infancy, P.M. Case of Big Fork, MT; and A.B. Case of Villisca, IA.
September 24, 1890, he was united in marriage to Clara A. Patton of Villisca, IA. Two children were born to this union: H.F. Case, Stanley, WI; and Mrs. Ellen Cavner of College Springs, IA.
Besides his wife and children there remain to mourn their loss are 2 sisters, Mrs. Ellen Riley, Kansas, Mrs.-----of Shambaugh, IA, 23 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Mr. Case's life was one of activity. He was engaged in the mercantile business at College Springs for a few years. He was also very successful in farming.
Having been prominent in political affairs, receiving nomination for State Senator at one time. He was a member of the GAR.
When quite young, he was converted, uniting with the United Brethren Church, later taking up membership with the Methodist Episcopal church and kept the faith until death.
In earlier days, he devoted some time in ministerial work, has also served as Sunday School superintendent at different places, but on account of failing health was unable to attend church services the past few years.
Mr. Case was a kind and affectionate husband and father. A useful life was his. A gleaner of friends wherever he went, and will be greatly missed.
Relatives from out of town who attended the T.P. Case funeral Sunday afternoon were Wm. Case and two daughters of Farragut, Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Duff (Huff?) of Grant, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Butler, Mr. & Mrs. John Moritz & Arthur Case & family of Villisca;Dan Reed of Elmo, Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Patton, Mr. R. E. Pierce, Mr. & Mrs. Otto Monk, Mr. & Mrs. Alton Pillard and Oscar Patton of Clarinda; John Glass & family, Mrs. Jane Woods and son, Joe Ross Calhoun & wife; Elvin Calhoun & wife, Harry McClarnon & wife, Mrs. George Reed and son, Port, Vernon Fulton and wife of Shambaugh, & H.F. Case of Stanley, WI.

In the spring of 1902, Thomas Peter & his wife Clara traveled to Washington state by covered wagon. Here they visited relatives in Kent, the Riley Cloud family, and also some other Cloud relatives in Bellingham. While in Kent, they discovered that Clara was pregnant, so they stayed in WA until after Clara Ellen was born. One of the relatives was Ray V. Cloud, who became the father of Ken Cloud, trombonist of the Seattle Symphony and leader of a dance band that was popular in Seattle for many years. The Cloud Room in the Camlin Hotel was named for him because he played there so often.

The Kansas Adjutant General's Office Report, Vol. I, 1861-1865; p. 180 - History of Regiment (Seattle Public Library Call No. R973.74 K1334) Includes a mention of W.F. Cloud--Col of Kansas 10th Regiment, April 3, 1862, Paola, KS. (p. 180)
Page 185 gives a report of the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, in which Thomas P. was injured. It is very interesting reading. One thing that particularly interested me was that the Regimental Adjutant's name was Porter Phillip (I read in another source it was Porter M. Phillip); which makes me wonder if he might have been particularly admired by Thomas P. and it could possibly be the reason he named his son (my grandfather) Porter M. Phillip Sylvester Case.
