[10907] Very little is known about Joseph Berryhill and his family. He appears in the records for Mecklenburg Co., NC as early as 1764 and may have come from Pennsylvania. There are researchers who believe he was the son of John Berryhill, a weaver, from northern Ireland and that his mother was Mary Bigness.
Other than what those researchers have filed with LDS/IGI, nothing has come to light on a Bigness family anywhere. Instead, the Reas and Berryhills seemed to have many ties to Bigham families in Mecklenburg Co., NC, as well as in Pennsylvania. Further research needs to be centered around the Bigham families.
There is a Berryhill genealogy in print but, aside from Joseph's will (which has many errors), it is an assortment of unrelated information on southern branches of Berryhill families, with no information as to whether they tie in with Joseph of Mecklenburg Co., NC. For a time there was a group of researchers on the internet. Most of the info passed along was not documented.
Abstract of the will of Joseph, mentions: Hannah, his wife; Samuel, his son who inherits 140 A and his bible; Jane, his daughter, wife of Thomas Williams and her child, Sarah; Mary, his daughter, married to David Rea; Andrew, his son, 140 A joining Robert McKnight and Andrew Herron; Sarah, his daughter; Betty, his daughter; William, his son; Joseph, his son; all the remaining part of his lands; his children, Hannah, Margaret, Thomas and James.
Minutes of the Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Mecklenburg Co., NC, 1780-1800, transcribed by Herman W. Ferguson, has a number of interesting entrees in regard to the children of Joseph Berryhill.
Lancaster Co., PA Deed Abstracts 1729-1770, by R. Thomas Mayhill, 1973, makes reference to Wm. McCullough and wife, Mary of Hanover Twp, as well as a Joseph Berryhill and wife, Hannah, in June 1763. These could possibly be the same couples that are shown in Mecklenburg Co., NC as early as 1764. Lancaster Co., PA records need to be searched. Land sold in Lancaster Co., PA had belonged to a family variously referred to as Prees, Prest or Priest. A recent check of the LDS records shows that someone has submitted Hannah Prees Price as the wife of Joseph Berryhill. While Hannah's maiden name may eventually prove to have been Price (or some similar name) this particular group sheet has too many errors to be taken seriously.
[10911] Oct. 2007: Searching the Berryhill name on WorldVitalRecords.com online, one of the links was "Find a Grave" and this led to information about Joseph Berryhill, as well as a picture of Steel Creek Church. The person who submitted this information provided the following: Joseph Berryhill was b. in NC ca 1734 (this probably is wrong). Father of Joseph was John; grandfather, Alexander; and great grandfather was Andrew. Wife was Hannah Price and they were married in PA in 1752, mentioning that she was also buried at Steel Creek.
Other links online led me to old group sheets from Everton's Genealogical Helper which must have been submitted by the same group who were on Prodigy network many years ago. Again, name of Joseph's mother given as Mary Bigness and his father, John Berryhill.

Bk 2, No. 316: Margaret Berryhill an Orphan of Jos. Berryhill, Decd., Came into Court & made choice of William Berryhill as her Guardian, Aged 14 years....
Was William Berryhill, who was appointed Guardian, her uncle? Her brother was too young to have been guardian. William Berryhill appears in many records for Mecklenburg Co. and would have been only a few years younger than Joseph.

Name could be either Bertand or Bertaud -- some later records are clearly the latter, but others really look more like Bertand. At least one secondary source has Bertrand, not supported in the primary documents.
[3115] listed as wife of Jean Johannot, paper maker.
Surname sometimes Buttex or Buthex, in other records clearly Berthex. Given name varies also, Anne Marie, Marie, or at least once, Marguerite.
Several documents relating to the marriage of Estienne Mourgue to Magdelaine Berthezens appear in the repertoires of Pierre Laurent, notary at St. Hippolyte. Among these is a "quittance pour Jean Bertezennes et Soulliere, mariés, et recog[naissance] de dot , Bertezene et Mourgue" (1649, p. 153). In 1656, a quittance appears for Jacques Bertezenes contre Estienne Mourgue, with recog. pour Magdelaine Bertezene -- suggesting perhaps that Jean has died.
