The family then moved to a farm southwest of Gettysburg, where she lived until she married Roy O. Smith on Aug. 31, 1933. They helped her uncle, Dora, on his farm for about one year. They then moved to the Dearborn, Mich. area and lived there until the mid-1970's. She then returned to Gettysburg to help out with her mother until she died. She continued to live in Gettysburg and moved into Oahe Manor in August, 1997.
She was active in the Eastern Star chapter in Dearborn and was also active in the Methodist Church in Dearborn and Gettysburg.
Daughter of Sp. Berthelemy Knecht, Schaffner of Payerne. Schaffner is the term usually translated in French as Gouverneur, and signified the appointed representative of Bern in charge of the territories that Bern had acquired in 1536 as a result of the division of the property of the former Abbey of Payerne with Fribourg. The Schaffner or Gouverneur's jurisdiction did not include the city of Payerne, which remained under the control of an Avoyer drawn from the town council but appointed by Bern.
