As quoted in Reed Genealogy: "Among the children received in Holy Baptism at the New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church, in Upper Hanover Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, by the Rev. Frederich Wm. Von-der-sloot, during his pastorate there and recorded in the church book in 1784, was: 'Fridrich, son of Jacob and Anna Maria (Maurer) Riedt; b. July 9, 1784; bapt. Oct. 22, 1784; sponsors were (Rev.) Von-der-sloot and wife,' (Anna Margaretha Riedt). At the time of baptism the Rev. Von-der-sloot, being an uncle by marriage and in good ecclesiastical standing, was honored by having the child named for him. Montgomery County was created from Philadelphia County, Sept. 10, 1784, when the child was two months old."

[9457] The Reed Genealogy names Henry but gives no information about him or his family. It was through research of the Bedford and Somerset Co., PA records by J. Wynne McCoy that we were able to identify Henry as the son of Frederick Reed. My father had mentioned that the name was originally spelled "Riedt" so, when researching, we were careful to check all spellings of the name. It was a stroke of luck when I located Dr. Reed's genealogy at the Historical Society at Easton, PA. This book was well researched and written and, I believe, can be counted on for accuracy.

In the "American Daily Advertiser", published in Philadelphia, PA, under date of November 22, 1820, is found the following: "Died -- In New Britain Township, Bucks County, on the 2d inst. Colonel Jacob Reed in the ninety-first year of his age. He served his country faithfully during the whole of the eventful period of the Revolution -- and before the close of the war he was honored with a Colonel's commission."

[14937] At the time of his marriage, Jacob Reed and his wife moved from Hatfield, Twp. to a farm near his wife's parents in Upper Hanover Twp., Philadelphia Co, PA, where he farmed until about 1788.
About this time there was a westward migration of the younger people in the area. Jacob Reed and his family joined this group and first located in Washington Twp., Franklin Co., PA, then moved to Frederick Co., MD, settling near his cousin, Philip Reed.
Jacob and his family did not remain long in Maryland. In 1800 they moved on to Bedford Co., PA, where they remained for about 13 years. The next migration took the family to Sugar Creek Twp., Stark Co., OH, where they were the second white family to settle.
Jacob Reed served in the army during the Revolutionary War.
Saw active field service as a Soldier, going with his troop to Trenton, NJ, in 1780. In 1786 we find Jacob Reed, Jr., a soldier, and now in Capt. John Siegfried's Co., Upper Hanover Twp., Philadelphia Co., PA military. Also served in 1789 and 1790.
Granted land on the strength of his military service during the Revolutionary War.
Buried in the family burial plot -- a reserved piece of land -- on the old Jacob Reed homestead, in Sugar Creek Twp.

[10018] Handwritten papers on file at the Norristown, PA Historical Society, June 1981, indicated that the Reed family came from Lorch on the Rhein River (but not the Lorch where the Metzgers came from). Included in that file was a diploma written in German.
[10020] Before coming to America the Reeds were members of the Old Konkordia Reformed Church of Mannheim, Germany. In Pennsylvania they were members of the Skippack Reformed Church in Salford Twp, which only existed from 1727 to 1735. They then became members of the New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church, located in Upper Hanover Twp., Philadelphia Co., PA, now near the borough of East Greenville, Montgomery Co., PA.

Johann Philb Ried was listed among German and Swiss Palatines who arrived at the port of Philadelphia in the ship "Friendship" on October 6, 1727. A tracing of Johann Ried's signature on file at Harrisburg, PA.
Buried at New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church cemetery. The year after his death county boundary changes placed this church in Montgomery Co., PA.
Killed by a bolt of lightening striking the chimney of the Hatfield home, where he was sleeping near the fireplace. Buried in the old Leidy cemetery.
