He purchased property at Gimel from George Savariod 27 sep 1496 (cited in the terrier ACV Fh 17, reconnaissance by his grandson Anthoine de Genève dit Billiard, fol. 15, and referring to a previous terrier compiled by Eg. Nycod Brasier). In the same context, a donation to Pierre de Genève, son of Louis, was made by Anthoine Savariod 14 jul 1529, implying that either Louis de Genève or his wife was probably a close relative of the Savariod family. In a reconnaissance in a terrier ACV P de Mestral I 1507, fol, 430, dated 09 may 1501, Ludovicus de Gebennis alias Billiard is now deceased, and at least some of his property has devolved to his sons Petrus and Johannes.
However, the terrier Fh 160, for the Château d'Aubonne, tells a slightly different story (fol. 91v, a reconnaissance for the sons of the late Discret Jaques Filliettaz). The property that was in the hands of the Filliettaz family as of 25 oct 1575 had been recognized in 1507 (Eg. Jean Brasier, and previously in another terrier compiled by Eg. Pierre Mangie — Pierre Mange is the compiler of Fh 5, about 1440, of Fh 105, with dates as late as 1460, and Fh 123, about 1454) by the Savariod family, and "semblablement" (i.e., previously?) in a terrier compiled by Eg. Jehan Vulliet of Gingins by "Anthoenne fille de Pierre Billiard de Gymel femme de Loys de Geneve." (This record suggests that all the "de Genève dit Billiard" families are descendants of Louis de Genève and Anthoine Billiard.)
In order to reconcile these citations, it becomes necessary to date or identify the terriers that preceded both Fh 17 and Fh 160. For Fh 160, the main source was evidently Fh 137 (Jean Brasier, about 1503-1510), but there is a notation at the beginning indicating that the reconnaissances for Gimel refer to "another" volume by Jean Brasier, which does not seem to exist today, unless it is Fh 9, which covers the "noble fiefs" subject to the Château d'Aubonne (Jean Brasier, 1507). Fh 9 includes the names of the subjects (or "censiers") of each of the nobles, as is often found in other terriers for "noble fiefs". In some cases, Fh 9 also includes citations of the original leases to the censiers or their predecessors. Fh 17 mentions a previous terrier compiled by Nycod Brasier for Noble Claude de la Porte, and another by the same commissaire for Noble Guillaume Marchand, who was the father-in-law of Claude de la Porte.
Another terrier, Fh 203, was compiled by Louis Challet for the Baron of Aubonne about 1522. It contains two reconnaissances (beginning at fol. 184, dated 05 sep 1523 and 24 jan 1528, the latter without significant genealogical information). The first concerns "Petrus filius quondam Ludovici de Gebennis alias Billiard necnon Leodegarius, Jacobus, Colletus et Franciscus filii quondam Johannis filii predicti Ludovici de Gebennis alias Billiard". Although the construction is somewhat ambiguous, it appears that Louis had two sons, Pierre and Jean. Jean had died by about 1522 leaving sons of his own, Légier, Jaques, Colet (=Nicod), and François. The property had previously been recognized by Pierre Billiard and his late brother Johannes, in terriers of Guillermus Berardi and Johannes Challeti. Guillermus Berardi compiled a terrier Fh 198 about 1489, for the Coseigneurie of Aubonne. Johannes or Jean Challeti (possibly more than one notary of this name) was the compiler of Fh 121, dated 1437, Fh 125, dated 1456, and Fh 129, dated 1471.
The terrier Fh 123, compiled by Pierre Mange, does in fact contain a reconnaissance by Pierre Billiard, giving his parentage and identifying his wife (fol. 577, see our notes for Pierre Billiard). It is entirely possible that the other terriers cited above as possible precursors of Fh 17, Fh 160, and Fh 203 will yield additional information.
ACV Fh 199 and Fh 200 consist of "extracts" of transactions involving the Confrérie du Saint Esprit of Gimel, mostly from the 15th Century. Among these transactions is one in Fh 199 (fol. 29) dated 26 jun 1468, basically a debt or mortgage of Pierre Billiard of Gimel and Louis de Genève, residents of Gimel, to the Confrérie. This transaction suggests that Louis had already reached the age of majority, and had very likely already married the daughter of Pierre Billiard by that date. The same two terriers place Louis at Gimel as early as 1455 (and presumably past the age of majority). Fh 200 also contains a transaction dating from 1405, showing that Jaques and Pierre de Genève of Bière already owed money to the Confrérie at Gimel, suggesting very strongly that Louis de Genève is a descendant of the family at Bière.
In addition to the two children, Pierre and Jean, who are identified as brothers in Fh 203, there appears to be another son Pierre. In the terrier Fj 10, circa 1522, we find Pierre senior and Pierre junior. It is not uncommon to find two or even more children with the same baptismal name in the same family at this period. In fact, there is a case at Gimel in the last half of the 16th Century where two identically named brothers married two identically named sisters! We assign the Claude de Genève alias Billiard whose descendants are found at Montherod to the same family, but without much evidence at this time. Claude was alive as late as 1535, and his son Guillaume, a notary, had died before 1567. There is some evidence to suggest that Claude's descendants are connected with those of Jean and Pierre junior (no descendants are definitely known for Pierre senior).
The terrier Fh 211 also contains some tantalizing clues that seem to connect the various de Genève families. Among others, there is a description of a property (fol. 369) originally owned by François Morel, then recognized in a lost terrier of Jean Vulliet (circa 1480?) by Jean son of the late Mermet Gentil alias Morel, and next by Pierre and Jean sons of the present Louis de Genève in a terrier compiled by Jean Brasier (circa 1506 but probably lost; the list of previous owners given in Fh 211 may constitute a genealogy leading to Louis de Genève). The property was then ceded by Antoine de Genève alias Billiard (grandson of Louis from other records) to Pierre son of Collet (Nicollet) de Genève of Bière in 1552, the transaction recorded by the notary Guillaume Billiard (son of Claude de Genève from other records). "Cession" of a property implies that the first party is conveying his interest in the property to the second party, who already holds an interest in or a claim on the same property. While there are many questions that still have to be investigated, the simplest solution appeared to be that both Louis and the elder Nicollet de Genève were sons of Jean Gentil, and we therefore showed Louis as his son. By doing so, we hoped the search for additional evidence would be advanced, and inconsistencies of dates and relationships gleaned from the terriers would become more obvious. However, see below, a new alias has surfaced! The parties to the "cession", Antoine Billard and Pierrre de Genève, were third cousins once removed.
Terriers containing information relating to the origin and connections of the de Genève family: ACV Fi 40, fols. 705 ff, 774-776; Fh 133, fols. 47v-52; Fh 200, fol. 71; Fh 211, fols. 30 ff, 366 ff; Fh 9, fol. 114v.
In the terrier Fh 129, compiled by Johannes Challet, there is a reconnaissance (fol. 28v) for Ludovicus filius quondam Vulliermi Remond alias de Gebennis de Gimel suo et Anthonie eius uxoris filie Petri Billiart de Gimel nominibus, dated 26 feb 1471. Unfortunately, there seems to be no further information from this source about this Vulliermus Remond, not even whether Vulliermus was also known as de Gebennis, or if that alias applied only to Ludovicus. In terriers for Bière, such as Fg 38 (1488-1489) and Fi 40 (1522), various combinations of aliases connect the following family names: Gros, Morel or Morelli, Gentil, Juhennyn (Junini, etc.), Reymond, Pictet, and de Gebennis or de Genevaz. Notably, there is a Stephanus Reymondi alias Junini de Biery mentioned in Fi 40 (fol. 762v), who sold property to a Matheus Brussin of Féchy, whose granddaughter Glaudia and her husband Nycodus Morelli alias Junini made a reconnaissance in 1522. This information led to the discovery of a reconnaissance in the terrier Fi 21 (fol. 237), from about 1453-1454, for property held by Biatricia wife of Vuilliermus Reymondi and Peroneta wife of Mermetus Pictet (elsewhere, alias Gentil — and this Peroneta was the daughter of Franciscus Morelli of Bière) at Féchy. As the preceding reconnaissance is for the Brussins family, this is almost certainly our Vuilliermus. Traces of these families at Féchy are also found elsewhere in Fh 133 (not yet examined). In Fi 24 (fol. 255v), there is a mention of property that Ludovicus Billiard had obtained from Petrus Reymondi (1494, mentioned as a neighboring tenant to a part of the noble fief subject to Claudius de Menthone). A very early terrier, Fg 2, from 1337, shows that the given name Reymondus and the family name Reymondi were already numerous in the area around Ballens.
