His registers from 1537 through 1589 survive (FHL microfilm 0996651). Unlike the rest of his family, he worked at Payerne rather than Cully.
At the beginning of his first notarial register (ACV DP 13/2), 03 feb 1546, we find the following inscription:
"Registre premier de moy Blaise Chalon bourgeoys de Cullie à present residant à Payerne des actes contractz lettres et Instrumentz receuz soubz le seel de la communaulté de la ville de Payerne, la juré de laquelle communaulté messieurs l'advoyé Jurés et conseillers dudit Payerne m'ayt oultroyés le Jour sainct Blaise mecredy troysiesme de Febvrier l'an de grace notre Seigneur mil cinq centz et quarante six, Et ay faict le serement accoustumé en conseil en la main de mon cousyn Jehan Amey Gachet à present banderet dudit Payerne. Et leur ay faict le repas requis en tel cas ches Anthoine Succanié piccard hoste de l'enseigne de la cloche audit Payerne pour lequel repas en ay payé audit hoste huictz florins." (Blaise Chalon and Jean Amey Gachet were third cousins.)

His brother Blaise Chalon was present at the signing of the marriage contract, as was the bride's brother Pierre and her mother Marguerite Grand. However, the Clavel "livre de raison" (ACV P SVG G 10) indicates that Jaques was the son of Jean Chalon, not Pierre (believed to be the father of Blaise). The sources need to be studied more carefully to resolve this discrepancy. It is not impossible that the Clavel "livre de raison" is mistaken on this point.

If we have decoded the abbreviations and grammar correctly, François was receiving funds for this marriage from Marguerite Gachet and her husband Rodulph Prouz of Vevay, and she was the sister of Bartholomeus Challon.
