American records of uncertain origin give his date of birth as 29 nov 1814, and list him as Ulysses B. Borrell (in America, the name was spelled in several different ways, including Borell, Burrell, and perhaps others). The original baptismal record at La Brévine is clear as to the date, but less clear about his name. The record starts with the given name in the margin, "Ulysse-Borel fils de Henri François ff. Abram Henri Borel de Couvet bourgeois de Neuchatel, & de sa femme Rosalie ff. François Louis Courvoisier-Piot, du Locle & de la Brévine, bourgeois de Val[angin]..." Below the "Ulysse-Borel", in the margin, is a line that has been crosshatched, signifying that it is to be disregarded, and under that, the surname Borel, underlined. From this peculiar format, it is easy to see how a minister might copy the record as "Ulysse-Borel, son of Henri-François Borel", and such an official extract would result in the name becoming "Ulysses B. Borrell" in America (including the 1840 census, at Vevay, Indiana). But it is also possible that the original record is simply erroneous, and that he was never intended to have a second given name. We found no other instance where Borel was used as a given name.
Sponsors at his baptism included Félix Louis Courvoisier-Piot, his uncle.
An obituary notice appeared in the Vevay Reveille, 26 nov 1885 (p. 5, col. 7): "Died. Borel—In Sue City, Mo., October 25, 1885, Ulysses Borel, aged 72 years. The subject of this notice was a well known citizen of this(Switzerland) county, born in Switzerland, Europe. He emigrated to America with his father when about 8 years old, and made his home with John Daniel Morerod till he was married. About the year 1858, he with his family moved to Missouri, and located upon a farm near Sue City, where he died. His many old friends in Switzerland county will be pained to learn of his death."
From this account, we would place the date of arrival in the United States at about 1821-1822.
