Listed in WFT as Mary G. Campbell. Marriage bond was transcribed as Mary George Marcel. Published family records say that the wife of Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel was named Marie Georgette Marcel and was born in Bern. Since this is clearly not true, we assume this daughter was the one so named. Also, it is clear she was not born in Europe, but in the District of Columbia. Mary entered a homestead claim in Republic Co., KS (NE1/4 sec. 21, T4S, R2W), 28 nov 1866, patent issued 01 dec 1873, vol. 2 p. 156, final cert # 678.
Her tombstone (photograph provided by Cindy Marcell) is cracked and somewhat weathered. The date of death appears to be October 15, 1873, not 1875 as stated in other records. It should be possible to confirm this from other records. The age at death is either 64 years, 4 months, 16 days, or else 64 years, 1 month, 16 days. If the former, the implied date of birth is September 29, 1809, which matches other family records. Her birth date should be recorded in the application for her homestead claim.

Published information from 1951 research by Lausanne archivist: Came as refugee in 1706 from St.-Jean-d'Hérans in Dauphiné, received as permanent citizen 08 dec 1708. (Ref: D 110 Ch. des 60, folio 67). Livre d'Or notes 1709, from St.-Jean-d'Hérans, Dauphiné. A child of Pierre Marcel of "St. Jean d'Hérand" was buried 18 may 1717 (Registres mortuaires des français refugiés à Lausanne).
Pierre Béthoux (Histoire des protestants de Mens et du Trièves en Dauphiné de l'édit de Nantes à la révolution française, Grenoble: Editions Alzieu, 1998) has published information on this family, drawing from private sources as well as the archives of Isère. He located the marriage contract of the parents of Pierre Marcel, the testament of his uncle Jacques Bouchayer, the names of Pierre's brothers and sisters, and even Pierre's testament ("Caillat, notaire", 11 oct 1722, this is Jean Daniel Caillet, see below). We understand Pierre Béthoux died in August, 1997, and we have no information about the disposition of his papers, nor the whereabouts of the private collection that included copies of the marriage contract and the testament of Pierre Marcel.
The records of the notary Jean Louis Caillet (ACV DG 47) include several small registers devoted to testaments. In the register labeled DG 47/6, containing testaments from about 1720-1730, we found the following document. The spelling "Marcet" reflects the prononciations of that era. The final "t" was evidently not pronounced in this and similar names. Thus, we find in the same area a family Morel, with additional spellings Moret and Moré. Today, both in France and in Switzerland, the final "l" in Marcel as well as the one in Morel are both pronounced.

Admitted as voting citizen in Lausanne, 05 jun 1758. This appears to be the Pierre Marsel, nephew of Magdelaine Richard wife of Charles Bernard, named as her "conseiller tutelaire" in her testament of 22 apr 1736. Moyse Beylon, the husband of Pierre's sister Judith Marcel, is also identified as Magdelaine's nephew. Therefore, Madgelaine should be the sister of Jeanne Richard.
Pierre's marriage contract was recorded by Jean Daniel Caillet, notary (ACV DG 47/4), 14 apr 1730. Pierre was accompanied by his mother Jeanne Richard, as well as his uncle Jean Barnaud and his cousin Jean Genevois. The bride, Susanne Cellier, was accompanied by her parents Samuel Cellier and Susanne Meyer, as well as her "cousins" Louis Francillon of Lausanne and Jean Chabrand of Morges. While Louis Francillon was truly her cousin (son of her aunt Judith Cellier), Jean Chabrand was connected only through two "in-law" relationships. He was the husband of a niece of the wife of her uncle Daniel Meyer.
The Archives of the City of Lausanne provided a copy of his reception into citizenship:
Manual du Conseil des 60, AVL, D 113, folio 238v-239r.
Du 5e Juin 1758.
Sr. Pierre Marcel.
Sous la Présidence de Monsieur le Boursier présente Monsieur le Controolleur Général se sont assemblé les Nobles et très honnorés Seigneurs du Soixante;
The testament of his wife Susanne Cellier notes that Pierre's testament had been recorded by the notary Des Tallents on 07 dec 1767. This document has not yet been located. It may not have been Pierre's final testament, since he did not die until 1778.
[2940] Witnesses were Pierre Richard and Judith Barnaud.

Living in Coppet, Vaud, Switzerland at the time of his marriage. The extract recorded at Nyon says the marriage was at Coppet, but the record at Coppet says they were married at the church of Commugny, les annonces signées par Mr. Monod pasteur à Nyon. It appears his death is the one recorded at Lausanne 23 aug 1780, rather than the one on 16 nov 1778. The 1778 death specifies that the person was "bourgeois assouferté de Lausanne", and we found no record that Pierre son of Etienne was ever granted this status. Did he leave any descendants?
One possibility is that his daughter was the Françoise Marcel, daughter of Pierre, "habitant perpetuel à Lausanne", who married in 1767, at Prilly, to George Delagrange.
[2928] Witnesses were Pierre Marcel and Jeanne Richard, suggesting that Estienne was the brother of Pierre.
[14631] Marriage banns in Nyon in Nov. of 1740. "L'epoux m'a dit qu'il epousert lundi prochaine 5 Xbre 1740 à Coppet." But at Coppet, we learn the marriage occurred 09 dec 1742 at Commugny.

A document recorded by Isaac Louis Gabriel Bourillon, notary at Lausanne, dated 20 jun 1802, indicates that Albert Marcel son of Félix Marcel has received permission from his mother Jeanne Françoise Pernet to obtain a power of attorney to allow someone of his choosing to register a bill of sale at Bière for the paper mill that Jean Marcel has sold to Jean Jacob Oehl of Basel. The actual contract of sale has not yet been located. In 1795 he is noted as bourgeois of Lausanne and Paudex.
He is also apparently the A. Marcel who participated, with his father, in the famous "banquet des Jordils", a celebration of the second anniversary of the French Revolution, held at Rolle on July 14, 1791, causing much displeasure among Their Excellencies of Bern. Hearing of harsh retribution against others who attended, some of the participants fled into French territory and remained there until it was safe to return. François Francillon of Lausanne has provided a collection of correspondence between Jacob Francillon-Mercier and these exiles. The Marcel who was with them at one point signs himself "A. M.", and he refers to a letter received from his father. By June, 1792, most of the exiles had returned, including Marcel.
He is identified in the marriage bann at Prilly, 11 jan 1795, as "bourgeois assoufferté de Lausanne et bourgeois de Paudex".
