[3015] Witnesses were Pierre Arbaud, refugee, and Marie des Mollins, "all refugees." The word "Janin" appears after the father's name and seems to have puzzled the indexer of these records.

Refugee census of 1693 places Moyse in Lausanne with his wife and four children; by 1694, the same family, children ranging from age 20 and down, family from La Mure, Dauphiné. 1696 listing has occupation tanner, wife Judith Barnod, children ages 17, 14, 9, and 15 months. Ages of parents are consistent with information from Lausanne death records. Son Pierre and daughter Jeanne are proved by relationship with Pierre Marcel, nephew of Marguerite Arnaud, widow of Pierre Richard.
In church records of Lausanne, several references to the composite name Richard-Janin occur in connection with this family. Such names have been used extensively in the Dauphiné to distinguish branches of numerous families. In Lausanne, the name is sometimes given as Janin (Jani, Jany, Jaunin, etc.), sometimes as Richard Janin, and most frequently as Richard. References to this family are distinguished from those relating to earlier, native Swiss families of the same surnames by indications of refugee status, and by association with the related families Barnaud, Arnaud, Genevois, DesMollins, Malvieux, etc. So far, the earliest reference to them in Lausanne is a baptism 22 dec 1688.
The surviving records of the protestant church at La Mure (Isère) cover the years 1668-1680. They contain many references to all of the related families, and, most importantly, the marriage record of Moyse Richard Janin and Judith Barnaud. They were assisted at their marriage by Pierre Thomas, uncle of Moyse, and Moyse Maurel, godfather of Moyse Richard Janin; and by Marc Vulson de Villette, uncle of Judith, and her brother Daniel Barnaud. The Catholic records of La Mure have also survived; they contain the abjuration of the whole family, Pierre son of the late Jean, his son Moyse, his children, and his wife Judith Barnaud. Despite the ambiguity of this list, we conclude it actually names four generations. Moyse signed this document; the signature matches that on his marriage to Judith Barnaud.
A document of Philippe Tacheron, notary at Lausanne (FHL #0904238), reveals that Moyse bought his tannery at Lausanne from Pierre Fiaux 17 jul 1691 for 500 florins, plus 200 florins for tools, of which 610 florins was borrowed from Monsieur le Lieutenant Mennet. Possibly the same man, Jean Philippe Mennet, notary at Lausanne, recorded a sale 08 jul 1713, in which Anne Mayor widow of the late Jean Jaques Neyret and her daughter Susanne Neyret sell to Moyse Richard "bourgeois à soufferté de Lausanne" a house, in the Hasle of St. Laurent, avec un pressoir et des mats de cave, situated by "le capite et jardin dudit Sieur Acquisiteur d'orient, la ruelle publique de bize, le dernier de la maison de Jaques Grobety d'occident, la grande particule de la maison de lesdittes Venderesses jusques à une muraille qui borne laditte particule vendée à vent", for 300 florins.
Apparently the same Moyse Richard is noted as a witness elsewhere in the Pays de Vaud, in circumstances that strongly suggest the presence of close relatives. At Vevey, there is a baptism 09 dec 1687 for Moyse son of Humbert Richard of La Mure en Dauphiné and his wife Susanne Mayanson (or Mayencen). The sponsor on that occasion was Moyse Richard from the same place. Also at Vevey, 02 jun 1689, there is a baptism for Olympe, daughter of the same "Imbert" (pronounced almost the same as Humbert) Richard, the sponsors this time being Paul Richard, brother of the father of the child, and his wife Olympe Thomas. The same couple next baptised a son Moyse 04 mar 1695, and the sponsors are recorded as Moyse "Richard Lamy" (perhaps an attempt at Janin, misread) and Claudine Margueron. There is also a baptism 30 dec 1691 for Enemond, son of Paul Richard, joiner and refugee from France, and his wife Olimpe Thomas. The marriage of Paul Richard and Olimpe Thomas is recorded at Vevey 24 apr 1689, and it shows that Paul was the son of Enemond Richard of La Mure. From these records, we might suppose that Humbert and Paul Richard, sons of Enemond, are uncles of Moyse Richard-Janin, and that Pierre Thomas, uncle of Moyse, had married a sister of Humbert and Paul. Pierre would also be a sister of Olympe Thomas, wife of Paul Richard.
We can identify some of these people in the surviving church records of La Mure:
We are a long way from proving the connections between the families at La Mure, but we encounter members of the same families frequently in the records of Lausanne, Vevey, Moudon, Morges, etc. The records of the notaries of Vevey might contain additional evidence.

Various documents of Isaac Guibaud le jeune, notary, from at least 1726 deal with the estate of Pierre Richard and the finances of his widow Marguerite Arnaud. In a document of 15 oct 1726, her father-in-law the late Moyse Richard is mentioned, and again 06 nov 1728. Age at death given as about 34 years, but that would conflict with known births. He must have been a couple years older.
